The study on the early warning period of varicella outbreaks based on logistic differential equation model.

Chickenpox is a common acute and highly contagious disease in childhood; moreover, there is currently no targeted treatment. Carrying out an early warning on chickenpox plays an important role in taking targeted measures in advance as well as preventing the outbreak of the disease. In recent years, the infectious disease dynamic model has been widely used in the research of various infectious diseases. The logistic differential equation model can well demonstrate the epidemic characteristics of epidemic outbreaks, gives the point at which the early epidemic rate changes from slow to fast. Ther…

A Clinico-epidemiological Study of Childhood Herpes Zoster.

Herpes zoster (HZ) is a viral infection believed to be caused by the re activation of varicella zoster virus (VZV) or human herpes virus type 3 (HHV 3) that persists in the posterior nerve root ganglion. HZ is rarely reported in the pediatric age group with an intact immunity. Past infection with VZV and immunization with chickenpox vaccine are key markers in the onset of varicella zoster in children. Our aim was to study the clinicoepidemiological pattern of HZ infection in children aged less than 12 years and to start an early management to prevent long term complications. A prospective obse…

Natural history of varicella zoster virus.

The varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a herpesvirus responsible for two distinct clinical disorders, primary varicella (chickenpox) and zoster (shingles). Primary varicella is a common childhood disease in Western countries, which presents as pruritic macules, papules, vesicles, pustules, and crusts, usually on the back, chest, face, and abdomen. In immunocompetent children, chickenpox is generally a mild disease with little morbidity and rare mortality. Primary varicella is associated with more morbidity in adults. Following resolution of primary varicella, VZV persists in a latent form in dors…

Smallpox vaccination reactions, prophylaxis, and therapy of complications.

Smallpox vaccination in the United States is a routine public health measure which has been under intensive review during the last decade. The most frequently occurring adverse reactions to vaccination are benign and require little or no systemic therapy. These reactions include accidental infection, erythematous and urticarial rash, and generalized vaccinia. Chickenpox occurring concurrently with vaccination presents no problem unless vaccinia has widely superinfected the chickenpox lesions. There is no risk to the pregnant woman who is vaccinated, but there is a slight risk that the fetus wi…

Vision loss in an immunocompetent child post varicella infection: A case report.

Chickenpox may lead to several neurological complications. Optic neuritis is one of the complications which has rarely been described, especially in immunocompetent individuals. We report a case of an 11-year-old immunocompetent girl who presented with sudden onset bilateral vision loss three weeks after varicella eruption. Ophthalmic examination revealed bilateral optic disc edema. Diagnosis of bilateral optic neuritis secondary to varicella was established based upon the preceding medical history, supported with clinical and radiological findings.

Disseminated vaccine strain varicella as the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-defining illness in a previously undiagnosed child.

The Food and Drug Administration licensed a live-virus varicella vaccine (Varivax; Merck & Co Inc, West Point, PA) in March 1995. Prelicensure adverse events were minimal; however, since licensure and increased vaccine use, rare previously undetected risks have arisen. Presented here is the clinical course of a previously undiagnosed, human immunodeficiency virus-infected boy who developed dissemination of the vaccine strain of varicella zoster after immunization. chickenpox, human immunodeficiency virus, pneumonia, encephalopathy, varicella vaccine, adverse events, dissemination.

Varicella-related deaths among adults--United States, 1997.

During January-April 1997, state health departments reported three fatal cases of varicella (chickenpox) to CDC. All three cases occurred in young adult women who were unvaccinated and susceptible to varicella and who were infected by exposure to unvaccinated preschool-aged children with typical cases of varicella. This report summarizes these three cases, which indicate that preventable varicella-related deaths continue to occur in the United States. In addition, the report re-emphasizes the recommended strategies for preventing varicella.

Herpes zoster in a 7-month-old infant: a case report and review.

Herpes zoster (HZ) is a cutaneous viral infection of the skin that presents in a dermatomal distribution. It represents reactivation of herpes varicella zoster virus that has continued to exist in a latent form in the neurons of the posterior root ganglia. Although it is rare to see HZ in children, cases have been reported after exposure to varicella zoster in utero or during the first months of life. We present a case of HZ in a healthy 7-month-old girl who had had chickenpox at age 4 months.

Still's disease and the virus-associated haemophagocytic syndrome.

A 15-year-old male developed features of Still's disease. He was treated, with incomplete response, with aspirin and corticosteroids. Some 10 months after the onset he contracted chickenpox and became gravely ill. A diagnosis of histiocytic medullary reticulosis was made because erythrophagocytic histiocytes were detected in marrow aspirate films. Necropsy studies showed systemic infiltration by benign-appearing histiocytes and led to the final diagnosis of the virus-associated haemophagocytic syndrome due to varicella-zoster infection in an immunocompromised patient.

A Pediatric Case of Urinary Retention Caused by Shingles on the Buttocks.

Herpes zoster, also called shingles, is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), which can become active again after lying dormant in nerve cells following chickenpox. Cases of herpes zoster affecting the buttocks in children that lead to urinary retention are rare. This report details a notable case of a 10-year-old girl who experienced urinary retention for nine days before she was hospitalized. Her medical history included chickenpox at approximately one year of age. Five days before the presentation, she visited a clinic where she was advised to undergo urinalysis and was prescribed ant…

Septic Arthritis of the Shoulder following Recent Varicella Zoster Virus Infection in an 18-month-old Child: A Case Report.

We present a case of an 18-month-old female child who attended the paediatric emergency department with mild dehydration, pyrexia and a healing chickenpox (varicella) rash. Her older brother recently recovered from chickenpox without complication and is believed to have been the source of her infection. Her classically self-limiting condition was initially treated supportively with oral fluids and benzydamine mouth spray, before two further presentations to the emergency department with worsening clinical deterioration, a protracted pyrexia and an exquisitely painful right shoulder prompted th…

Congenital varicella syndrome: still a problem?

A woman contracted chickenpox in the 12th week of gestation. Her general practitioner and later the consultant obstetrician warned her about the small risk of giving birth to a disabled child. She decided to continue the pregnancy without undergoing invasive tests to diagnose fetal intrauterine infection. Symptoms of congenital varicella syndrome (CVS) were detected by ultrasound in the 29th and 34th weeks of gestation. On admission to hospital, the baby was not considered infectious and was not isolated because polymerase chain reaction analysis to detect varicella zoster virus (VZV) DNA in t…

Live attenuated varicella vaccine: evidence that the virus is attenuated and the importance of skin lesions in transmission of varicella-zoster virus. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Varicella Vaccine Collaborative Study Group.

To examine whether the live varicella vaccine virus is attenuated, we analyzed varicella vaccine-induced contact cases of clinical chickenpox in healthy siblings of immunized children with leukemia. A rash developed approximately 1 month later in 156 children with leukemia who had been vaccinated. Vaccine-type virus was isolated from 25 of these children. Of 88 known susceptible healthy siblings who were exposed to a vaccine with a rash and from whom follow-up information was available, there was evidence of infection in 15 (17%). Of 15 siblings with seroconversion, 11 (73%) also acquired a mi…
