School performance in children with prenatal drug exposure and out-of-home care in NSW, Australia: a retrospective population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal drug exposure (PDE) is a global public health problem that is strongly associated with the need for child protection services, including placement into out-of-home care (OOHC). We aimed to assess school outcomes for children with PDE (both with and without neonatal abstinence syndrome [NAS]) and the association of school performance with OOHC. METHODS: Using linked population health, OOHC, and school test data, we compared results on the Australian standardised curriculum-based test, the National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), for children with PDE who

The medical and social outcome in 2016 of infants who were victims of shaken baby syndrome between 2005 and 2013.

INTRODUCTION: There are few studies that have investigated the long-term outcome of children who have been victims of shaken baby syndrome (SBS). However, the consequences appear to be significant and the data available from a social point of view are scarce. The main objective of this study was to define the medical and social outcome in 2016 of the infants who were victims of SBS and admitted to one of the Marseille university hospitals. The number of patients followed by a specialized team was evaluated along with their clinical state, living conditions, and whether a social support system

Posttraumatic stress symptoms in children and adolescents referred for child welfare investigation. A national sample of in-home and out-of-home care.

This study examines the prevalence and correlates of heightened posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms in a nationally representative sample of 1,848 children and adolescents (ages 8-14) who were referred to child welfare for investigation of abuse or neglect based on the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being. The severity of current PTS symptoms was assessed using the PTS subscale of the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children, a standardized child-report scale evaluating common symptoms associated with trauma. The overall prevalence of clinically significant PTS symptoms was 11.7% (o

Health Care Issues for Children and Adolescents in Foster Care and Kinship Care.

Children and adolescents involved with child welfare, especially those who are removed from their family of origin and placed in out-of-home care, often present with complex and serious physical, mental health, developmental, and psychosocial problems rooted in childhood adversity and trauma. As such, they are designated as children with special health care needs. There are many barriers to providing high-quality comprehensive health care services to children and adolescents whose lives are characterized by transience and uncertainty. Pediatricians have a critical role in ensuring the well-bei

Effects of home-based play-assisted stimulation on developmental performances of children living in extreme poverty: a randomized single-blind controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Children living with foster families in a resource-limited setting such as Ethiopia are at risk of developmental problems. It is not yet clear whether intensive home-based developmental stimulation assisted by play can reduce these problems. The main objective of this study was to examine the effects of play-assisted intervention integrated into basic services on the developmental performance of children living with foster families in extreme poverty. METHODS: A randomized single-blind (investigator) controlled trial design was used. The study was conducted in Jimma, South West Et

The relationship between commercial sexual exploitation and foster care placement in the U.S.: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence youth in foster care may be vulnerable to commercial and sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) in the U.S. Youth in care may show vulnerabilities such as running away, identifying as sexual/gender minorities, or exhibiting complex behavioral and mental health needs. However, the nature and nuances of the relationship between CSEC and foster care placements has been largely unexamined. OBJECTIVES: This review explores the literature on trafficking among foster care youth to establish what is known about risk factors, vulnerable populations, and leverage points fo

The Views of Autistic Adults on Early Autism Interventions: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Literature Review.

For many years, early autism interventions were developed without the involvement of autistic people. This review explores the views and experiences of autistic adults regarding psychosocial/educational interventions for young autistic children. Four databases (Web of Science Core Collection, Education Resource Information Centre, Education Database and PsycINFO) were searched; 19 studies were identified. Quality appraisal was performed using the Quality Assessment with Diverse Studies tool. Qualitative data were analysed using thematic synthesis. Quantitative data were analysed using descript

Is family mealtime a unique window into family functioning? An observational cross-sectional study of parent-infant interaction quality in three contexts.

Family mealtime is a recurring everyday context for parent-child interaction, typically involving family members sitting together with the shared purpose of eating and socializing. However, little is known about the quality of parent-child interaction in this context, as this is often assessed during play or structured tasks. The aim of this study was to examine whether family mealtime constituted a context evoking specific parent-child interaction quality. Participants were 110 families with 24-36-month-old toddlers from the Copenhagen metropolitan area. Parent-toddler interactions during fre

Short- and longer-term growth and development of fat mass in preterm infants.

Preterm infants typically experience faster growth rates than term-born infants, often doubling their weight in six to eight weeks. However, many face challenges leading to growth faltering and suboptimal neurodevelopment. To achieve optimal growth, these infants often require fortified breastmilk or high-nutrient formula. While meeting nutrition and growth targets are essential, concerns arise about rapid postnatal growth during their catch-up phase, particularly regarding increased body fat at term-corrected age, possibly increasing their risk for obesity and chronic health conditions later.

Joint engagement and early language abilities in young children with Down syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Early social strengths likely serve as a foundation for language acquisition for young children with Down syndrome (DS). One way to characterize early social skills is to examine a child's engagement with a caregiver around an object of interest. The current study examines joint engagement in young children with DS and its relation to language abilities at two-time points in early development. METHODS: Participants were 16 young children with DS and their mothers. At two time points, mother-child free plays were completed and coded for joint engagement. Language abilities were m

Maternal sensitivity to distress, attachment and the development of callous-unemotional traits in young children.

BACKGROUND: Callous-unemotional (CU) traits are characterized by a lack of responsiveness to the emotions of others, particularly negative emotions. A parenting environment where the child's own distress emotions are sensitively responded to may help foster the child's ability to respond to the emotions of others. We tested whether maternal sensitivity to distress, and other parenting characteristics, were associated with CU traits over the preschool period, and examined whether this was mediated via infant attachment status. METHOD: In an epidemiological cohort, CU traits were assessed at ag

Comprehensive health evaluation of the newly adopted child.

Children who join families through the process of adoption often have multiple health care needs. After placement in an adoptive home, it is essential that these children have a timely comprehensive health evaluation. This evaluation should include a review of all available medical records and a complete physical examination. Evaluation should also include diagnostic testing based on the findings from the history and physical examination as well as the risks presented by the child's previous living conditions. Age-appropriate screens should be performed, including, for example, newborn screeni

Psychological impact of significantly short stature.

These baseline data confirm that many children with significantly short stature are vulnerable to diverse developmental, social and educational problems, and substantiate the importance of a multidisciplinary treatment approach that includes a comprehensive psychological and medical assessment. The psychological assessment should focus on the early detection of problems in academic achievement and psychosocial development, in order that appropriate educational and counselling interventions can be provided. The paediatrician can also foster a positive relationship with patients and their famili

Ion channel TRPV2 is critical in enhancing B cell activation and function.

The function of transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV) cation channels governing B cell activation remains to be explored. We present evidence that TRPV2 is highly expressed in B cells and plays a crucial role in the formation of the B cell immunological synapse and B cell activation. Physiologically, TRPV2 expression level is positively correlated to influenza-specific antibody production and is low in newborns and seniors. Pathologically, a positive correlation is established between TRPV2 expression and the clinical manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in adult and ch

Somatic consequences of violence against women.

The rapidly growing literature on the somatic, nonpsychiatric effects of violence on women's health is reviewed, including rape, battery, and the adult consequences of child sexual abuse. The sequelae of these victimizations are summarized with consideration of acute effects (genital and nongenital injuries, sexually transmitted disease, and pregnancy), late consequences (chronic pelvic pain and other forms of chronic pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, premenstrual symptoms, and negative health behaviors), and long-term increases in the use of medical services. A recurrent theme across the liter
