Prevalence of pervasive developmental disorders in the British nationwide survey of child mental health.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) is not well established and needs monitoring. The prevalence of PDD in the 1999 nationwide British survey of child and adolescent mental health was investigated. METHOD: A randomized, stratified sample of children (N= 12,529) aged 5 to 15 years was generated from the Child Benefit Register. Trained interviewers interviewed parents and youths aged 11 or older with a standardized diagnostic interview (Development and Well-Being Assessment), and questionnaire data (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) were obtained from te

Child health promotion in developing countries: the case for integration of environmental and social interventions?

In spite of improving epidemiological knowledge in relation to child health, the challenge of promoting the survival and quality of life of infants and children in most parts of the developing world remains an abiding public health problem, for both the countries and the international agencies involved. Current infant and child health programmes largely reflect western style medical care, with emphasis placed on reducing mortality, and the preventive aspects confined mainly to immunisation, improved nutrition, provision of micronutrients, promotion of breast-feeding and birth spacing. In contr…

Contraceptive practices before conception and after the birth of a child with a chronic health problem.

Sexual and marital relations as well as family functioning may be altered by the birth of a child with a chronic health problem. After the birth of a child with a health problem, mothers have varied responses from an urgent desire to have another baby to a firm desire to avoid pregnancy. Mothers of healthy infants and mothers of infants who had been placed on apnea monitors for at least 5 months were surveyed on their contraceptive practices, family functioning, their marital satisfaction and sexual satisfaction, as well as their desire to have or not have another child. Surveys were conducted

The effects of lead exposure on urban children: the Institute of Child Health/Southampton Study.

A study of the associations between level of tooth lead, behaviour, intelligence and a variety of other psychological skills was carried out in the child population aged six to seven years in three London boroughs. Tooth lead was estimated from the chemical analysis of shed teeth donated by children. 2663 (62.4 per cent) of the eligible children donated teeth. A study of the total population was carried out to see if those who donated teeth were representative of that population. There were small but consistent and statistically significant differences--tooth-givers being of slightly higher in

Impact of child loss on parents' health-related quality of life: evidence from the china health and retirement longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: Given the profound impact of adverse life events on later-life health, this study examined how the occurrence, timing, and number of child losses were associated with trajectories of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among middle-aged and older adults in China. It further explored potential mediating mechanisms and heterogeneity by gender and residence. METHODS: Using data from four waves (2011-2018) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), this study included 13,161 individuals. HRQoL was assessed using the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). Linear

The Temporal Impact of Socioeconomic Deprivation on Child Health Outcomes in India: Evidence from the Demographic Health Survey 2015-2021.

In India, poor child health is a pertinacious issue. This article investigates the impact of water and sanitation, maternal health care service utilization (MHCSU) and breastfeeding practices on under-five child health outcomes (CHOs) in India using the two rounds of the Indian Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), 2015-2016 and 2019-2021. In 2019-2021, unprotected sources of drinking water were associated with an increased prevalence of under-five wasting. Unimproved sanitation facilities were likely to increase the prevalence of under-five stunting; however, unlike in DHS 2015-2016, it had no…

Factors Affecting Delivery Health Service Satisfaction of Women and Fear of COVID- 19: Implications for Maternal and Child Health in Pakistan.

OBJECTIVE: High maternal and neonatal mortality rates in developing regions like Pakistan are linked to low rates of institutional deliveries. One way to improve rates of institutional deliveries is through improving institutional delivery service satisfaction in women. The aim of this research is to identify which factors influence delivery service satisfaction during the period of COVID-19 and which socio-demographic characteristics of women are associated with greater fear of catching COVID-19 during institutional deliveries. METHODS: A total of 190 women who had given birth between May to

Barriers and facilitators to the implementation of lay health worker programmes to improve access to maternal and child health: qualitative evidence synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Lay health workers (LHWs) perform functions related to healthcare delivery, receive some level of training, but have no formal professional or paraprofessional certificate or tertiary education degree. They provide care for a range of issues, including maternal and child health. For LHW programmes to be effective, we need a better understanding of the factors that influence their success and sustainability. This review addresses these issues through a synthesis of qualitative evidence and was carried out alongside the Cochrane review of the effectiveness of LHWs for maternal and ch…

Temporal trends in youth mental health: Insights and predictions from 20 years of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services data.

OBJECTIVES: There is a well-established trend of increasing prevalence of mental health disorders among children and young people. Understanding patterns across diagnostic categories and predicting future changes is crucial for effective interventions and service planning. METHODS: We employed advanced time series analysis techniques, autoregressive integrated moving average-based time series modelling and forecasting, to analyse two decades of routinely collected data from the Western Australian Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services system. The large-scale dataset, with consistent samp

Parent-child agreement in reporting somatic distress, gastrointestinal symptoms, mental health, and general health in girls with functional abdominal pain.

UNLABELLED: To examine the inter-rater agreement between parent- and child-reported measures of somatic distress, gastrointestinal symptoms, mental health, and general health in girls aged 9-13 years with functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs). This secondary analysis used data from the Just in TIME randomized controlled trial, including girls aged 9-13 years with FAPDs. Both girls and their parents completed the Children's Somatic Symptoms Inventory (gastrointestinal distress (CSSI-GI) and somatic distress (CSSI-nonGI) subscales) and answered questions about general health and mental hea

Mental health of both child and parents plays a larger role in the health-related quality of life of obese and overweight children.

Aims A decrease in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) measures among obese (OB) and overweight (OW) children has been shown in several studies, but knowledge about the variables affecting HRQOL impairments is missing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between HRQOL and sociodemographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, metabolic parameters, mental symptoms and parental attitudes in a sample of OB/OW children. Methods Eighty-six OB/OW children, aged between 9 and 17 years, participated in the study. We performed sociodemographic questioning, anthropometric e

Tracking aid for global health goals: a systematic comparison of four approaches applied to reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health.

BACKGROUND: Four initiatives have estimated the value of aid for reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH): Countdown to 2015, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), the Muskoka Initiative, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) policy marker. We aimed to compare the estimates, trends, and methodologies of these initiatives and make recommendations for future aid tracking. METHODS: We compared estimates of aid for RMNCH from the four initiatives for all years available at the time of our analysis (1990-2016). We used publicly ava…
