The attentional blink in typically developing and reading-disabled children.

This study's research question was whether selective visual attention, and specifically the attentional blink (AB) as operationalized by a dual target rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task, can explain individual differences in word reading (WR) and reading-related phonological performances in typically developing children and reading-disabled subgroups. A total of 407 Dutch school children (Grades 3-6) were classified either as typically developing (n = 302) or as belonging to one of three reading-disabled subgroups: reading disabilities only (RD-only, n = 69), both RD and attention pr

Prevalence and outcomes of renal transplantation in children with intellectual disability.

To describe the prevalence and outcomes of renal transplantation in children with ID we performed a retrospective cohort analysis of all children receiving a first kidney-alone transplant in the UNOS dataset from 2008 to 2011. Recipients with definite, probable, and without ID were compared using chi-square tests. Kaplan-Meier curves were constructed for patient and graft survival. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the association between ID and graft failure and patient survival. Over the study period, 332 children with definite (117) or probable (215) ID underwent first re

Preventable visual impairment in children
with nonprofound intellectual disability.

PURPOSE: To assess the preventable visual impairment in children with nonprofound intellectual disability (ID). METHODS: A total of 215 children with IDs (90 Down syndrome [DS], 125 nonprofound ID) and 116 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects were enrolled in this study. All participants underwent ophthalmologic examinations including cycloplegic refraction measurements, ocular movement evaluation, screening for strabismus (Hirschberg, Krimsky, or prism cover test), slit-lamp biomicroscopy, funduscopy, and intraocular pressure measurements. All data were recorded for statistical analysis. R

Endocrine problems in children and adolescents who have disabilities.

The consequences of disability span almost all aspects of life, for families and for an affected individual. Endocrine aspects of disability cover disorders of hypothalamic pituitary dysfunction, bone health, puberty, fertility, sexual function and contraceptive needs. Adequate endocrine assessment for a child with a disability requires extensive and sensitive history to address social issues, general nutrition, vitamin D status, specific hypothalamic pituitary problems, together with parental concerns regarding puberty and contraception. Bone health assessment includes history of minimal trau

Bilateral submandibulectomy for the treatment of drooling in children with neurological disability.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Drooling is common in children with neurological disabilities (ND), and constitutes an additional burden with many medical complications in an already socially disadvantaged patient. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of bilateral submandibulectomy (BS) to treat drooling with regard to the parental satisfaction grade, complications and recurrence of drooling in children with ND. PATIENTS/MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed of all children with ND and drooling who underwent BS in our Department between January 1996 and November 2008. Data were

Anxiety levels in mothers of children with specific learning disability.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with specific learning disability (SpLD) undergo stress in coping with their child's condition. AIM: To measure the levels of anxiety and find out the cause of anxiety in mothers of children with SpLD at time of diagnosis. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Prospective rating-scale and interview-based study conducted in our clinic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred mothers of children (70 boys, 30 girls) with SpLD were interviewed using the Hamilton anxiety rating scale (HAM-A) and a semi-structured questionnaire. Detailed clinical and demographic data of mothers were not

Lifetime prevalence of learning disability among US children.

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to examine the lifetime prevalence of learning disability by sociodemographic and family-functioning characteristics in US children, with particular attention paid to the children with special health care needs. METHODS: By using data from the National Survey of Children's Health, we calculated lifetime prevalence of learning disability using a question that asked whether a doctor or other health care or school professional ever told the survey respondent that the child had a learning disability. Children with and those without special health care needs were classified

Evidence-based assessment of learning disabilities in children and adolescents.

The reliability and validity of 4 approaches to the assessment of children and adolescents with learning disabilities (LD) are reviewed, including models based on (a) aptitude-achievement discrepancies, (b) low achievement, (c) intra-individual differences, and (d) response to intervention (RTI). We identify serious psychometric problems that affect the reliability of models based on aptitude-achievement discrepancies and low achievement. There are also significant validity problems for models based on aptitude-achievement discrepancies and intra-individual differences. Models that incorporate

[The state of refraction in children with ophthalmic diseases of the disabling form].

The refraction condition was analyzed in 670 impaired-vision schoolchildren with various ophthalmic pathologies. Refraction defects were diagnosed in 98.9% of cases. Myopic refraction was detected in 48.9% of cases, while hypermetropic refraction was found in 50.0% of cases. Astigmatism was observed in 97.8% of cases; in 38.6%, it exceeded 2.0 diopters, which was mainly encountered at the retinopathy of prematurely newborns, albinism and congenital myopia. Compound astigmatism was detected in 83.5% of cases and mixed astigmatism was present in 8.3% of cases; the latter was more frequent diagno

Motor control alteration in posturography in learning-disabled children.

BACKGROUND: Some authors have mentioned that intersensory integration is damaged in children with learning disabilities (LDs), and other investigators point to motor control alterations in the same patients. Thus, we decided to study these hypotheses by means of posturographic recordings. METHODS: A highly selected group of 27 children with LDs was compared with 27 children of control group without LDs. Patients and controls were placed on the Equitest equipment platform. Sensory organization tests evaluated different test conditions that systematically vary visual, vestibular, and foot somat

Word decoding and picture naming in children with a reading disability.

Poor readers and reading age level matched controls performed a primed picture-naming task and a lexical decision task; their vocabulary performance was also assessed. Picture-naming data showed that poor readers were slower in the repeated prime condition only. This effect could not be explained by differences in vocabulary. Semantically related primes were ineffective compared with the repeated prime condition. Lexical decision data replicated the nonword reading deficit hypothesis: Poor readers were slower, particularly on the pseudowords and nonwords. A separately conducted analysis of the

Educational Kinesiology with learning disabled children: an efficacy study.

Educational Kinesiology is a treatment using specific movements to access different parts of the brain in maximizing learning potential. It has been recommended for use with learning disabled children; however, studies validating its effects are limited. The school records of 25 students each with a diagnosis of specific learning disability were examined for pre- and posttest scores on academic and perceptual motor skill measures following an Educational Kinesiology program. Analysis indicated significant improvement in perceptual motor skills following the Educational Kinesiology program. The

Impaired emotional health in children with mild reading disability.

Children with reading disabilities are at risk for emotional difficulties. There is some evidence that reading-disabled children with high socioeconomic status may be at risk of having low self-esteem. We conducted a preliminary study of the impact of reading disability on children's self-esteem and emotional health in a select group of mildly impaired reading disabled children with well-educated parents who were well informed about reading disabilities. We interviewed 28 healthy, preadolescent boys and girls with mean reading delay of 9.0 months and 39 comparable nonreading disabled children

The prevalence and correlates of behaviour problems in learning disabled children.

A retrospective cross sectional study of the prevalence of emotional problems among 502 learning disabled children seen in a specialized learning centre was conducted. Learning disabled children, diagnosed by an experienced clinician, were tested for emotional disturbances using the Child Behavior Checklist. The prevalence of behaviour problems among these children was 43%. This was much higher than the ten percent expected when this measure is used in a general population. There was no greater frequency of behaviour problems in children referred by teachers than in those referred by parents.

The language-reading relationship in normal and reading-disabled children.

In this study, the word retrieval, phonological awareness, sentence completion, and narrative discourse processing skills of 93 reading-disabled and 93 normally achieving subjects from 8 to 14 years of age were compared. The subjects were matched for age, sex, and neighborhood. Results revealed that the two groups differed significantly on the time and accuracy of word retrieval, their ability to produce a syntactically appropriate structure in a sentence completion task, their retelling of stories that had been read to them, their answers to questions about the stories, and their inferences.

PIC profiles for learning-disabled and behavior-disordered children.

Compared the performance of learning-disabled and behavior-disordered children (N = 60) on the recently published Personality Inventory of Children (PIC) to investigate the discriminant validity of the instrument. The data were analyzed by profile analysis and stepwise discriminant analysis. Results showed that learning-disabled and behavior-disordered children could be differentiated clearly on subtests that comprise the Cognitive Development and Conduct Disorder factors. However, less differentiation was found on the Internalization factor. Further examination indicated a possible diagnosis

Crossing the body midline in learning-disabled and normal children.

The SVCU scores of 179 learning-disabled children, ages 5 to 8, were compared with the scores of 120 normal children, using both the actual Space Visualization Contralateral Use (SVCU) score, and the SVCU category of "normal, suspect, or possible deficit," in order to evaluate whether using guidelines to interpret the SVCU as a function of age enabled differentiation between normal children and children with learning disabilities. The SVCU measure clearly differentiated between groups at the younger ages, although the difference was not as clear for the older age groups. It was suggested that
