PURPOSE: Choroid plexus tumors (CPT) are rare entities, and even rarer in adulthood.
METHODS: A retrospective consecutive series of 24 adult CPT patients was reviewed.
RESULTS: We described 24 adult CPTs. Clinical onset included cerebellar signs (n = 11, 45.8%), intracranial hypertension signs (n = 8, 33.4%), cranial nerves impairment (n = 5, 20.8%), incidental findings (n = 4, 16.6%), seizures (n = 1, 4.2%), spinal signs (n = 1, 4.2%). At first diagnosis, CPT was mostly located in the ventricular system, but other locations can occur, including the spine (one case); meningeal involvement wa…

PURPOSE: To observe and understand the structural changes in choroidal vessels in eyes with hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA).
METHODS: A total of 44 patients were enrolled in this study: 22 children with hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia and 22 age-matched controls. SS-OCTA was used to scan the 6*6 mm macular area of their eyes. The average choroidal thickness (CT) and choroidal capillary flow area (CC) in a 3 mm diameter area centered on the macular area were obtained. The choroidal vascularity volume (CVV) was automatica…

Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) are extremely rare lesions that originate in the central nervous system. Still rarely, these can occur in heterotopic locations. We report a case of aneonate who presented at fourth week of life with a small swelling in the left side of the oropharynx. There were no other symptoms. MRI scan revealed a cystic lesion with the possibility of lymphatic malformation or teratoma. Swelling which was gradually increasing in size was electively excised. Histopathological examination revealed it to be an extracerebral CPP. Postoperative period was uneventful, and baby ha…

Post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) refers to a life-threatening accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that occurs following intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). An incomplete understanding of this variably progressive condition has hampered the development of new therapies beyond serial neurosurgical interventions. Here, we show a key role for the bidirectional Na-K-Cl cotransporter, NKCC1, in the choroid plexus (ChP) to mitigate PHH. Mimicking IVH with intraventricular blood led to increased CSF [K+] and triggered cytosolic calcium activity in ChP epithelial cells, which was followed by N…

Choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) is a rare, slow-growing, and typically benign brain tumor that predominantly affects children. CPP is characterized by well-defined circular or lobulated masses in the ventricles, leading to symptoms related to increased intracranial pressure and hydrocephalus. CPP diagnosis relies on a combination of clinical presentation, imaging findings, and histological examination. The World Health Organization (WHO) classification categorizes choroid plexus tumors into CPP (Grade І), atypical CPP (aCPP, Grade II), and choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC, Grade III). This article…

Incidence of melanoma has been increasing, being able to metastasize to any organ with variable clinical presentation and evolution. We present the case of a patient with choroid melanoma metastasis to the bladder, managed by transurethral resection of the bladder with apparent full excision, additional investigation identified probable peritoneal and pulmonary metastases. Further exams revealed a stable pulmonary lesion and no peritoneal disease. Patient was proposed for surveillance. Treatment of metastatic melanoma is variable, some advocate metastasectomy for single metastasis, others syst…

The choroid plexus (CP) is one of the key gateways regulating the entry of peripheral immune cells into the CNS. However, the neuromodulatory mechanisms of maintaining its gateway activity are not fully understood. Here, we identified adenosine A2A receptor (A2AR) activity as a regulatory signal for the activity of CP gateway under physiological conditions. In association with a tightly closed CP gateway, we found that A2AR was present at low density in the CP. The RNA-seq analysis revealed that the A2AR antagonist KW6002 affected the expression of the cell adhesion molecules' (CAMs) pathway a…

Evidence indicates that erythrocyte-derived iron and inflammation both play a role in intraventricular hemorrhage-induced brain injury including hydrocephalus. Many immune-associated cells, primarily stromal macrophages, reside at the choroid plexus where they are involved in inflammatory responses and antigen presentation. However, whether intraventricular iron impacts those stromal cells is unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between choroid plexus stromal macrophages and iron-induced hydrocephalus in rats and the impact of minocycline and clodronate liposomes on …

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus tumors are rare neoplasms that are typically found in the lateral ventricles. They have infrequently been reported in the third ventricle, and treatment strategies have varied.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors described a 6-month-old patient who presented with irritability and hypotonia. The patient was found to have a large tumor in the third ventricle with obstructive hydrocephalus. Preoperative angiography revealed a feeding artery from the right medial posterior choroidal artery (MPChA). The feeding artery was effectively embolized, and the patient subsequently receive…

Choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) is a rare brain tumour occurring mostly in infants and children. Most CPPs are intraventricular and present with symptoms and signs of increased intracranial pressure (ICP). This case report describes a middle-aged female who presented with spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea from a tumour located in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA). She underwent craniotomy with subtotal tumour resection and remained progression and rhinorrhea-free for several years. Upon clinical progression, the patient was treated with Cyberknife stereotactic radiosurgery. The pa…

Elevated amyloid precursor protein (APP) expression in the choroid plexus suggests an important role for extracellular APP metabolites such as sAPPα in cerebrospinal fluid. Despite widespread App brain expression, we hypothesized that specifically targeting choroid plexus expression could alter animal physiology. Through various genetic and viral approaches in the adult mouse, we show that choroid plexus APP levels significantly impact proliferation in both subventricular zone and hippocampus dentate gyrus neurogenic niches. Given the role of Aβ peptides in Alzheimer disease pathogenesis, we a…

Postnatal ocular growth is regulated by a vision-dependent mechanism that acts to minimize refractive error through coordinated growth of the ocular tissues. Of great interest is the identification of the chemical signals that control visually guided ocular growth. Here, we provide evidence that the pro-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-6 (IL-6), may play a pivotal role in the control of ocular growth using a chicken model of myopia. Microarray, real-time RT-qPCR, and ELISA analyses identified IL-6 upregulation in the choroids of chick eyes under two visual conditions that introduce myopic de…

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus carcinomas (CPCs) are rare pediatric tumors commonly associated with Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS), which involves a germline mutation of the tumor suppressor gene TP53.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the corresponding information of 12 cases, including the effects of surgery and radiotherapy and TP53 germline mutations, to analyse the management strategies. Kaplan-Meier curves and the log-rank test were used to evaluate the progression-free survival (PFS).
RESULTS: Twelve CPC patients were included, of which TP53 germline mutations were found in e…

A healthy choroidal vasculature is necessary to support the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptors, because there is a mutualistic symbiotic relationship between the components of the photoreceptor/retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)/Bruch's membrane (BrMb)/choriocapillaris (CC) complex. This relationship is compromised in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by the dysfunction or death of the choroidal vasculature. This chapter will provide a basic description of the human Bruch's membrane and choroidal anatomy and physiology and how they change in AMD.The choriocapillaris is the …

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: Although central nervous system tumors are the most common etiology of malignancies in the pediatric age group, choroid plexus carcinomas are rare, with an annual incidence rate of 0.10 per 100,000 children.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an adolescent male belonging to central India who had presented with a history of persistent headache, projectile vomiting, neck stiffness, and an episode of generalized tonic-clonic seizure. Neurological examination was suggestive of a space-occupying lesion. Further neuroimaging was suggestive of a large left-sided choroi…

Arachnoid cysts (ACs) are malformations that account for about 1% of all intracranial lesions. The aetiology and progression of these lesions have been debated, with one possible explanation being the production of cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) by ectopic choroid plexus (CP). To our knowledge, only seven cases of ACs incorporating CP have been reported, and we believe this to be the first reported case of a suprasellar AC containing ectopic CP. A 1-year-old boy presented with developmental delay and macrocephaly. MRI scan revealed hydrocephalus due to a suprasellar AC. An endoscopic ventriculocis…
