BACKGROUND: Choroidal and ciliary body melanomas divide into two approximately equal groups. Local therapy cures one group while the other metastasizes and proves lethal. Monosomy 3 strongly associates with aggressive behavior. We analyzed a series of choroidal and ciliary body melanomas to describe the cellular features and to compare them to monosomy 3 status using the latter as a surrogate for survival.

A 49-year-old woman with acute loss of vision in her left eye was examined in our clinic. Two months before arriving at out clinic, she was diagnosed with pancreatic endothelial carcinoma. Metastatic tumors to the brain presenting exclusively in the choroid plexus are rare and are most frequently associated with renal cell carcinoma. In this paper, the authors report an unusual case of intraventricular metastasis, and to the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of solitary metastasis from oesophageal carcinoma to the choroid plexus to be described in the literature. Metastatic disease is an important differential diagnosis which must be considered even for a patient without a documented primary malignancy who presents with a single lesion in the ventricle.

S-100 protein is a 21,000 dalton acidic calcium-binding protein present in ocular melanomas and some normal ocular tissues. Ocular fluids and extracts of ocular tumours were examined by a sensitive radioimmunoassay that could detect less than 5 ng of S-100 protein in minute volumes of fluid. The prognosis following treatment of uveal melanomata depends not only on factors such as cell type and degree of mitotic activity, size and location of the tumour, and the age of the patient, but also on the method of enucleation, as surgical manipulation of the neoplasm may potentiate the shedding of malignant cells into the blood stream. Following enucleation, an epithelioid type of malignant choroidal melanoma involving the posterior pole was grossly and histologically found to exhibit direct extraocular extension along the emissary for the long posterior ciliary artery and nerve on the temporal side. This paper is based on 21 patients with metastases of the choroid from extraocular tumors, observed over a period of 25 years (1952--1977) at Erlangen University Eye Clinic. Approximately 70% of these relatively rare metastases of the choroid are caused by cancer of the breast. During the past 20 years of enucleation, which was the standard treatment for choroidal melanoma over more than a century, has largely been replaced by eye salvaging therapies such as radiotherapy or local resection. A case of symptomless, solitary lipoma of the choroid plexus is described. The tumour was found in the left lateral ventricle of an adult female baboon (Papio papio) in the course of post-mortem examination.
