Existing methods for analyzing methylsulfonyl-PCBs in animal tissues require multiple laborious clean-up steps prior to quantitation. In this paper, we report a new, efficient method for the isolation and determination of methylsulfonyl-PCB metabolites in the blubber, liver, kidney, lung, and milk from mammals of marine origin using: solvent extraction, GPC fractionation, and clean-up on an adsorption chromatography column prior to analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The method is rapid and can be completed in about half the analysis time required by most other reported methods.

The synthesis of purines and pyrimidines using Oparin-Urey-type primitive Earth atmospheres has been demonstrated by reacting methane, ethane, and ammonia in electrical discharges. Adenine, guanine, 4-aminoimidazole-5-carboxamide (AICA), and isocytosine have been identified by UV spectrometry and paper chromatography as the products of the reaction. Weak-acid anions such as borate and cyanide, present problems in chemically suppressed ion chromatography, since the acids are weakly ionised, giving low conductivity and therefore decreased sensitivity. Free alpha-subunits of human glycoprotein hormone were purified from the urine of a healthy pregnant woman and from that of a patient with adenocarcinoma. Comparative study of their sugar moieties revealed that they have different numbers and different sets of asparagine-linked sugar chains, which are also different from those of alpha-subunit obtained by dissociation of whole hCG molecule. The eutopic free alpha-subunit contained biantennary complex-type sugar chains only. In contrast, the ectopic free alpha-subunit contained tri- and tetraantennary complex-type sugar chains in addition.
