The semen quality of 57 workers from a welding plant in South India and 57 controls was monitored. Blood nickel and chromium concentrations were determined by ICP-MS. Analysis of semen samples was performed in accordance with World Health Organization criteria. The blood level of nickel and chromium for the 28 exposed workers was 123.3 +/- 35.2 and 131.0 +/- 52.6 microg/l, resepctively, which was significantly higher than the 16.7 +/- 5.8 and 17.4 +/- 8.9 microg/l for the control group (n=27). Human exposure to carcinogenic Cr(VI) compounds is found among workers in a large number of professional groups, and it can also occur through environmental pollution. After exposure of growing chicks to different concentrations of dietary chromium (Cr) as potassium chromate (K2CrO4) for a period of 3 w, the Cr uptake by different internal organs was determined. More Cr was accumulated in the kidney, liver, pancreas and spleen than in the blood, muscle, heart and lung. A very small amount was found in the brains of the birds given different concentrations of Cr.

We investigated the clinical applicability of the lymphocyte proliferation test (LPT) in chromium contact sensitivity. 6 out of 8 chromium-sensitive patients were positive in the LPT, whereas none of 8 non-chromium-sensitive controls responded in vitro to tri- or hexavalent chromium compounds. The transformation of a rat liver epithelial cell line under a wide range of doses of chromium was determined by anchorage-independent growth and tumor formation in syngeneic animals. The clastogenic effects of inorganic compounds of chromium (K2Cr2O7) and selenium (Na2SeO3) on the chromosomes of rat lymphocytes and bone marrow have been investigated. In vitro exposure of rat lymphocytes to K2Cr2O7 gave highly significant and dose-related increases in abnormal metaphases at 6 concentrations from 7 X 10(-6) M to 3.2 X 10(-5) M.
