The microcirculation of choroidal and ciliary body melanomas is remodeled into architecturally distinctive patterns. The presence of two histologic microvascular patterns, networks and parallel vessels with cross-linking, is strongly associated with metastasis. The accommodation potential of the eye is markedly reduced in patients with optic nystagmus. Trans-scleral exposure of the ciliary body to infrared low-energy laser at wavelength 1.3 microns may be used to repair the accommodation potential of the eyes and improve the visual function in nystagmus. Laser stimulation of the ciliary zone was carried out in 62 patients with optic nystagmus. A 52-year-old man who presented with a large ciliochoroidal malignant melanoma was treated by application of a 106Ru plaque. At 8 days after removal of the plaque, severe panophthalmitis with rapidly progressive scleral necrosis at the site of the tumor made enucleation inevitable because of impending perforation of the globe. Microscopic examination revealed an intense inflammatory response and almost complete necrosis of the tumor and overlying sclera. Possible mechanisms for the occurrence of this rare complication are discussed.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY)-like immunoreactivity (LI) in the iris-ciliary body of rats kept under constant darkness (DD) and in 12 h light-12 h dark cycle (LD) was determined by enzyme immunoassay. The cytoskeleton of epithelial and muscle cells of the human iris and ciliary body was analyzed by immunohistochemistry in three morphologically normal formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded eyes and in 34 eyes containing a uveal melanoma. A new cryoprobe was investigated in rabbits for experimental coagulation of the ciliary body. In a one-step procedure, the cyclodestructive effect was achieved by cooling the cryoprobe down to -100 degrees C without significant lens damage. The histological investigation showed extensive necrosis of the ciliary epithelium 2 h and 2 days after the freezing damage. After 2 weeks and 2 months, fibrous atrophy of the entire segment of the ciliary body could be observed.

The prejunctional effects of angiotensin II (AII) on stimulation-evoked secretion of 3H-norepinephrine (3H-NE) were investigated by in vitro methods in isolated, superfused rabbit iris-ciliary body preparations. Using a hand-held optical fiber, a surgical neodymium:yttrium, aluminum, and garnet laser was used transsclerally on the left ciliary body of 25 dogs. Dogs were assigned to groups and were given low (100 J) and high (238 J) energy levels. In 12 dogs given 100-J energy, the intraocular pressure decreased a mean value of 6 mm of Hg below that in the untreated right eye. Since cytoplasmic calcium is often maintained at a low level by active calcium extrusion, we examined whether calcium-stimulated ATPase is present in the rabbit ciliary epithelium. Three families with peripheral iris and ciliary body cysts are described. The cysts were multiple in 10 of the 11 affected patients, and they were bilateral in 8 of the 11. Angle closure glaucoma secondary to the cysts was present in 4 of the 11 cases. The management of this glaucoma requires a high index of suspicion, careful gonioscopic evaluation and proper medical and/or surgical treatment. The clinical and detailed angiographical findings taken during the follow-up of 182 patients with tumors of the iris and the ciliary body reported.
