Female genital mutilation (FGM) is an established cultural practice in over 30 countries. It has no health benefits, carries a high risk of physical and psychological harm, and is illegal in many countries including the UK. A sensitive approach is required, both in the management of complications and prevention of this practice. This article discusses the prevalence and classification of FGM, and offers practical advice to nurses and midwives involved in general and obstetric care. Legal aspects, including safeguarding responsibilities and the mandatory duty to report FGM in England and Wales,

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The objective was to determine the contribution of female genital cutting to genital fistula formation in Niger from the case records of a specialist fistula hospital.
METHODS: A retrospective review was undertaken of the records of 360 patients seen at the Danja Fistula Center, Danja, Niger, between March 2014 and September 2016. Pertinent clinical and socio-demographic data were abstracted from the cases identified.
RESULTS: A total of 10 fistulas resulting from gurya cutting was obtained: 9 cases of urethral loss and 1 rectovaginal fistula. In none of the case

BACKGROUND: WHO estimates that some 130 million women worldwide are affected, and every year another 2 million girls and young women are at risk of undergoing the practice of FGM. Although Nigeria has a prevalence of 19% in 2003,a reduction from 25% prevalence of 1999 national survey, it still has high absolute number of cases with wide regional variation. The awareness and perception of expectant mothers may give an insight as to what awaits their unborn daughters and have a bearing on the future of the practice.
METHODOLOGY: Semi-structured questionnaires were administered to 260 expectant

BACKGROUND: There is limited data on client preferences for different HIV self-testing (HIVST) and provider-delivered testing options and associated factors. We explored client preferences for oral-fluid-based self-testing (OFBST), blood-based self-testing (BBST) and provider-delivered blood-based testing (PDBBT) among different populations.
METHODS: At clinics providing HIV testing services to general populations (1 urban, 1 rural clinic), men seeking voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC, 1 clinic), and female sex workers (FSW, 1 clinic), clients had the option to test using OFBST, BBST

BACKGROUND: Female genital mutilation (FGM)/cutting remains highly prevalent in Somalia and is associated with a range of long-term gynaecological and urological complications. However, data on lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and their severity across different FGM types are limited. The aim of this study was to examine the association between FGM type and LUTS among symptomatic care-seeking women with FGM and to evaluate whether symptom severity differed according to FGM type.
DESIGN: This cross-sectional study included 122 symptomatic women with a history of FGM who presented with LUTS

BACKGROUND: Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a human rights violation that still affects more than 3 million girls aged 0-14 years each year. To achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 2030 agenda, efforts have been made at the local, national and international levels to end the practice by the year 2030. However, the recent COVID-19 pandemic may have reversed the progress made due to increased rates of early marriage of girls, violence against children and school closures during lockdowns. Although some surveys have examined changes in FGM prevalence over the COVID-19 period, changes at th

Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the mental health status of women with female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) and compare it with that of a similar group of women without FGM/C.Methods: A case-control study was carried out in 2018 among 122 women with FGM/C and 125 women without FGM/C who had been referred to one of the general health service centres in Kermanshah Province, western Iran. The 28 item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) was used to collect data on participants' mental health. A multivariate logistic model with odds ratios (ORs) was used to determine the relations

Deinfibulation can prevent or treat gynecological and obstetric complications in women living with type III female genital mutilation (FGM), and subsequently improve childbirth outcomes. Recently published WHO guidelines recommend use of deinfibulation in both circumstances. However, to really impact practice, evidence-based guidance needs to be matched with evidence-based implementation strategies. This qualitative evidence synthesis provides information on the factors that facilitate or act as barriers to use of deinfibulation, and the context and conditions that are necessary for implementi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Antiretroviral treatment (ART) can dramatically reduce the risk of HIV transmission, but the feasibility of scaling up HIV testing, linkage and treatment to very high population levels, and its impact on population HIV incidence, were unknown. We review key findings from a community-randomized trial in which we evaluated the impact of "universal test and treat" (UTT) on population HIV incidence in Botswana, a resource-constrained country with both high HIV prevalence and high ART coverage before study inception.
RECENT FINDINGS: We conducted a community-randomized trial (th

BACKGROUND: As a contribution to ongoing research addressing sexual violence in war and conflict situations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Rwanda, this paper argues that the way sexual violence intersects with other markers of identity, including ethnicity and class, is not clearly articulated. Male circumcision has been popularized, as a public health strategy for prevention of HIV transmission, although evidence of its efficacy is disputable and insufficient attention has been given to the social and cultural implications of male circumcision.
METHODS: This paper draws from

OBJECTIVE: This study identifies factors associated with not proceeding to clitoral reconstructive surgery among women with female genital mutilation (FGM) enrolled in a specialized surgical pathway.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a multidisciplinary referral center in Montreuil, France, between January 2021 and December 2023. The study included 220 women who expressed a wish for reconstructive surgery during their initial assessment. Factors associated with non-progression to surgery were identified using univariable and multivariable logistic regression, supplemented

The aim of this study was to examine mental health outcomes associated with FGM and identify possible predictors for the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in women affected by Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). A cross-sectional study was conducted among women who attended to Somalia Mogadishu Research and Training Hospital. Brief Resilience Scale, National Stressful Events Questionnaire for PTSD-Short Scale, Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form, Satisfaction with Life Scale, were used to collect data. Assessments of 180 women who underwent

BACKGROUND: Multidisciplinary care following female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) can consist of surgical interventions such as clitoral reconstruction (CR) in combination with individualized psychosexual care (PC). Evidence on both treatments, alone or in association, is limited.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the overall satisfaction with PC only or PC in combination with CR.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study of women who attended the FGM/C outpatient clinic under study and asked for CR between January 2013 and November 2021.
METHODS: Data were collected through questionnaire-based interview

BACKGROUND: Women with female genital mutilation/cutting are known to have psychological sequelae from the cutting and other traumatic experiences. However, very few studies report immediate psychological sequelae of genital reconstructive surgery in this population. The present case is the first to our knowledge to report post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms immediately following defibulation, a procedure common in women with female genital mutilation/cutting type III.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 31-year-old Sudanese nulliparous woman in the second trimester of pregnancy w

We sought to evaluate the frequency of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and any experiences of violence in women who had undergone Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) and were seeking asylum in the United States. We undertook a retrospective qualitative descriptive study of FGM/C cases seen in an asylum clinic over a 2-year period. Standardized questionnaires provided quantitative scores for anxiety, depression and PTSD. Clients' personal and physician medical affidavits were analyzed for experiences of violence. Of the 13 cases, anxiety and depression were exhibited by 92 and 100% of women, w
