Studies were performed to assess the role of changes in the excretion of citrate, a metabolic precursor of bicarbonate, in acid-base balance in diuretic-induced metabolic alkalosis. Rats on a low-chloride diet with sodium sulfate added were studied during a base-line period, 3 days of furosemide administration, and 4 days post-furosemide. During the period of furosemide administration, net acid excretion and plasma bicarbonate concentration increased. In the post-furosemide period, net acid excretion remained higher than base line but plasma bicarbonate concentration did not increase further.

Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) are considered to play a central role in the corneal ulceration process subsequent to an alkali burn. We have described the time course of PMN infiltration into the ocular tissues following an alkali burn. Conventional gallium scans are not useful to evaluate patients with metastatic melanoma. We evaluated a new method of tomographic gallium imaging. One hundred fourteen tomographic scans were obtained in a prospective surveillance study of 67 patients over a 3-year period. A single dose of promethazine or of betamethazone, either alone or compounded with dexchloropheniramine, was found to inhibit skin wheal formation in onchocerciasis patients challenged with Onchocerca supernatants. The effect of clomiphene citrate (CG) on sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) was studied in 10 oligozoospermic patients with varicocele and 6 normospermic men. Gallium uptake in a mediastinal mass has been most often seen with lymphoma. A case is reported of thymic uptake in an otherwise healthy 4 1/2 year old boy who had recently had pneumonia. Serial films always showed an unchanging prominent though normal thymus and follow up gallium scans showed disappearance of thymic uptake. This and other similar cases indicate the need to consider a non-neoplastic thymus when gallium accumulation is noted in the anterior mediastinum of a child.

Bone marrow scinitigraphy using 111In-Indium-citrate and 99mTc-sulfur rhenium colloid was compared with each other in 6 male and 3 female patients.
