The duplication of the cecum and appendix is a rare congenital anomaly found incidentally on exploration for another indication. We present here a case of a female child at 18 months of life, who was a diagnosed case of anorectal malformation with a persistent cloaca and at the time of the surgery, duplication of the appendix and cecum was found. Both the appendices were attached to the cecum with a separate base. Thus, appendectomies and a sigmoid divided colostomy were performed.

Urorectal septum malformation sequence is a sporadic malformation due to failure of septation of primitive cloaca with no anal opening. Umbilical cyst can be associated with chromosomal aneuploidy such as trisomy 18 or trisomy 13. We report on a fetus with complete urorectal septum malformation sequence with an umbilical cyst resulting from a patent urachus and with meconium as its content. This report adds to the variety of the causes of umbilical cyst and the spectrum of consequences of urorectal septal defect.

Miniaturised cystoscope allows exploration in neonates, but in males, it may be difficult and dangerous. Recto-urinary fistulae are generally recto-prostatic, seldom recto-bulbar. Recto-vesical cases were not observed. The fistulous orifice is quite always small and its form is round or ovoid. An anfranctuous and large orifice may be of iatrogenic origin. Endoscopic examination is mandatory when recto-urinary fistula is clinically or radiologically suspected and is always necessary before surgery of cloaca or secondary operation for ano-rectal malformations.

This report describes a human embryo with a length of 12 mm (horizon XVII Streeterm 35 +/- 1 day old), in which the following malformations appear: Dilation on both sides of the Wolffian ducts, and the more caudal mesonephritic glomerules (mesohydronephrosis). Dilatation of both ureters and renal pelvis (uretero-hydronephrosis). These malformations are the result of the accumulation of liquid secreted by the mesonephros in a cloaca which is dilated, unwalled and blocked by an epithelial plug which is continuous with the cloacal membrane.

Cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed in the cloacal coprodeum of two red-lored parrots (Amazona autumnalis). The parasites were adhered to the microvillus border of epithelial cells and their presence was associated with loss and atrophy of microvilli. Merozoites, trophozoites, gametes, and oocytes were identified with light and transmission electron microscopy. The coprodeal epithelium was hyperplastic and the lamina propria was infiltrated with moderate numbers of heterophils and lymphocytes.

Urorectal septum malformation sequences are rare congenital malformations. We report a case of persistent cloaca prenatally diagnosed at 26 weeks of gestation in 1 of a set of discordant monozygotic twins. The affected fetus at birth had a phallus-like structure, bladder outlet obstruction, an imperforate anus, and uterine distension. Diverting colostomy, vesicostomy, and percutaneous colpostomy tube were initially placed before definitive posterior sagittal anorectovaginoplasty was completed. A cloacal anomaly occurring in only 1 of a set of monozygotic twins is an exceedingly rare event.

Recently a few articles have been published concerning the long-term follow-up of vaginoplasty of cloaca. However, no postoperative evaluation has been fully described and, in particular, the late complications are still unknown. We report a case of tuboovarian abscess after colonic vaginoplasty for high cloacal anomaly in a 13-year-old girl. She required a left salpingo-oophorectomy and postoperatively showed regular menstruation. Therefore we stress that tubo-ovarian abscess is one of the important late complications after colonic vaginoplasty for high cloacal anomaly.

Viable Cryptosporidium serpentis oocysts originating from 6 captive snakes were gastrically delivered to 12 Cryptosporidium-free African clawed frogs and 9 tadpoles and 3 recently metamorphosed adults of Cryptosporidium-free wood frogs. On days 7 and 14 postinoculation, no life-cycle stage of Cryptosporidium was observed in any of the histological sections of stomach, jejunum, ileum, cloaca, and cecum. However, viable inoculum-derived C. serpentis oocysts were recovered from the water in which the amphibians were kept. Amphibians may disseminate C. serpentis oocysts in the natural habitat.

Bacterial cultures of cloaca swabs from 86 captivity kept psittacidaes revealed 17 Escherichia coli bearing birds sharing strains which, on the basis of enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) PCR analysis, proved to be genetically similar. Further, triplex PCR specific for the genetic markers chuA, yjaA, and TSPE4.C2 was used to assign the strains to the E. coli reference collection (EcoR) B2 group. One strain of each, from the enteropathogenic (EPEC), enteroaggregative (EAEC) and Shiga toxin (STEC) E. coli pathovars were found among these isolates.

Colonic adenocarcinoma was diagnosed by surgical biopsy in a domestically raised 3-yr-old male corn snake (Elaphe guttata guttata). The snake presented with a history of constipation. Several masses were palpated in the distal coelomic cavity. On proctoscopy, a nodular firm white mass encircled the distal colon proximal to the cloaca. The histologic diagnosis was transmural mucinous colonic adenocarcinoma with scirrhous reaction. Resection of the affected region alleviated intestinal obstruction for at least 4 mo, after which the snake was lost to follow-up.
