In De Quervains dislocation fracture pseudarthroses of the scaphoid bone following closed reduction are very common, 59% being reported in a former publication. Exact adaptation of the fragments after reduction of the perilunar dislocation is essential for healing of the fracture. In cases where this is not possible by conservative means, open reduction and screwing of the scaphoid fracture is necessary for better result with a rate of pseudarthroses of only 16%.

The authors report a rare case of fracture separations at both ends of the radius combined with an epiphyseal and diaphyseal fracture of the ipsilateral ulna. A seven-year-old girl fell one story and sustained a closed injury of her forearm. A closed reduction was unsuccessful, and an open reduction was performed with three of the four fractures being secured with Kirschner wires. These wires were removed one month later, and range-of-motion exercises were started. Thirty months after surgery, both forearms were equal in length, although the proximal radial epiphyseal line appeared partially c

Seymour's fracture is an extra-articular, transverse, physeal, and juxta-epiphyseal open fracture of the distal phalanx seen in childhood. In this study, we present 10 adult cases of fractures localized to the metaphyseal region, 1-2 mm distal to the insertion of the extensor tendon. Mean age was 38 years. Four patients were treated conservatively with a mallet finger splint. Closed reduction and osteosynthesis with Kirschner wires (K-wires) was performed in three of the patients. Three of the patients had open fractures in whom closed reduction could not be performed. They underwent open redu

Posteromedial dislocation of the elbow in children is an extremely rare injury. The current study describes four boys with posteromedial dislocation of the elbow associated with a displaced fracture of the lateral humeral condyle. The patients ranged in age from 6 to 12 years (average age, 9 years 6 months). Closed reduction of the elbow dislocation and open reduction of the lateral humeral condyle fracture with fixation by Kirschner wires by a lateral approach was done in each patient. This was followed by 4 weeks immobilization wearing a long-arm cast. There were three excellent results and

Colles' fracture is rarely associated with a carpal or metacarpal fracture. We report a case of ipsilateral, simultaneous Bennett's and distal radius fracture after moderate trauma. Closed reduction and external fixation led to uneventful healing and no residual symptoms.

This article describes the technique of closed reduction with percutaneous fixation using Kirschner wires in helping the reduction of two-part valgus angulated and displaced proximal humerus fractures at the surgical neck. Traditional open reduction may lead to more accurate anatomic reduction; however, extensive tissue dissection increases the risk of avascular necrosis. Thus, closed reduction of unstable fracture mostly required forceful reduction maneuvers, which can harm the vascular supply and increase hematoma formation. Reduction of the fractured sides can easily be performed by engagin

BACKGROUND: Children with forearm fractures who present to the emergency department (ED) often need a closed reduction. In our institution, until 2017, pediatric trauma patients presented to the general trauma ED (GTED) where no sedation services for pediatric patients were available. From 2017, patients presented to the pediatric emergency department (PED) where closed reductions were performed under sedation when appropriate.
OBJECTIVES: To compare GTED and PED with regard to length of stay (LOS) and hospitalization rates of pediatric patients with forearm fractures who needed a closed redu

INTRODUCTION: Forearm fractures are common pediatric injuries. Most displaced or angulated fractures can be managed via closed reduction in the operating room or in the Emergency Department (ED). Previous research has shown that emergency physicians can successfully perform closed reduction within ED; however, the fracture morphology amendable to ED physician reduction is unclear. The aim of this study is to detail the fracture characteristics associated with successful reduction by ED physicians.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of children (aged <18 years) presenting to the ED of

INTRODUCTION: Ipsilateral fractures of the shaft of the femur combined with hip dislocations are extremely rare injuries, presenting a difficult diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Diagnosis of hip dislocation is often delayed, due to the focus on femoral fracture.
CASE PRESENTATION: This article presents a case never described before of a 19-year-old patient who sustained this unusual combination of injuries as a result of a road traffic accident. The patient had an irreducible posterior hip fracture-dislocation associated with an ipsilateral femoral shaft fracture. Closed reduction attemp

Pure tibiotalar dislocations without associated fracture are rare. The authors report a case of an unusual closed tibiotalar dislocation without fracture, involving proximal ascension of the talus. Despite immediate closed reduction, a tibiofibular diastasis remained, therefore two syndesmosis screws were inserted, followed by six weeks of plaster casting. After 5 years of follow-up, functional results were excellent, MRI showed slight arthritic degenerative changes.

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association2007eng
Lateral condyle fractures in children are the second most common fracture about the elbow. Anatomic reduction of intra-articular displacement is considered a priority. Most experts agree that the treatment of choice of mildly displaced (>2 mm) lateral condyle fractures is open reduction-internal fixation or intraoperative arthrography followed by closed reduction and percutaneous pinning. In this report we described an alternative approach using closed arthroscopic-assisted reduction. Arthroscopy was performed by use of a 30 degree, 4.5-mm arthroscope through a proximal anteromedial portal wit

Plantar dislocation of the first metatarsophalangeal joint is a possible, albeit rare, injury to the foot. The mechanism has been attributed to a hyperflexion motion, with the hallux situated plantar to the first metatarsal head. In this article, we provide a case example of an open, plantar dislocation of the first metatarsophalangeal and perform a literature review of this rare injury. Based on x-ray analysis of the published cases, the sesamoids may or may not dislocate with the phalanx based off of the local capsuloligamentous anatomy. As a result, a modified Jahss classification (type 3A

Acetabular fracture-dislocations are severe injuries that require urgent closed reduction of the hip and often require surgery to restore hip stability. Other authors have described acetabular fracture-dislocations associated with femoral neck fractures, but to our knowledge, this case report is the first to describe an acetabular fracture-dislocation in association with an ipsilateral pertrochanteric fracture and subtrochanteric extension. The polytraumatized patient initially was not stable enough for prolonged surgery. Through a 3-cm anterolateral hip incision, a 5-mm Schanz screw was intro

One-third of all mallet fingers are associated with a fracture. Many different management strategies have been described. Some authors recommend nonsurgical management for all mallet fractures. In contrast, others suggest mandatory open reduction and internal fixation for bony mallet injuries with a large displaced dorsal fragment and associated distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint subluxation. We retrospectively studied 3 cases of a mallet fracture with a large displaced dorsal fragment and subsequent DIP joint subluxation managed with closed reduction using only percutaneous pinning of the DIP

Paediatric forearm fractures are commonly treated with closed reduction and cast immobilization. Determining the best way to cast these fractures during the initial presentation may prevent the need for re-manipulation . An analysis of casting technique for all patients under eighteen years of age treated with closed reduction and cast immobilization for both-bone fractures of the forearm at a regional tertiary referral hospital over 7 years was undertaken. One-hundred and eighty-nine consecutive patients with 207 fractures were reviewed. No significant association was found between casting te
