Exposure-based cognitive behavior therapy for atopic dermatitis: an open trial.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common and debilitating inflammatory dermatological disorder and is marked by itch and inflamed skin. Scratching, sleep loss, and avoidance of situations associated with more AD symptoms are central hypothesized mechanisms that perpetuate the disorder and cause reduced quality of life. We developed an exposure-based cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) that entailed mindfulness practice as a means to increase tolerance for aversive experiences during exposure. The aim of the present study was to test the treatment's acceptability and preliminary efficacy in adults w

Cognitive behavior therapy for chronic subjective dizziness: a randomized, controlled trial.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a brief cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) intervention on the physical symptoms, illness-related disability, and psychologic distress of patients with chronic subjective dizziness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one patients with chronic subjective dizziness referred by a neurootologic clinic were randomly assigned to immediate treatment or a wait-list control. Three weekly treatment sessions based on the CBT model of panic disorder, adapted for patients with dizziness, were administered by a clinical psychologist. Treatment included

Applied relaxation vs cognitive behavior therapy in the treatment of panic disorder.

The present study investigated the efficacy of a coping-technique, applied relaxation (AR) and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), in the treatment of panic disorder. Thirty-eight outpatients fulfilling the DSM-III-R criteria for panic disorder with no (n = 30) or mild (n = 8) avoidance were assessed with independent assessor ratings, self-report scales and self-observation of panic attacks before and after treatment, and at a 1-yr follow-up. The patients were treated individually for 12 weekly sessions. The results showed that both treatments yielded very large improvements, which were maintain

An uncontrolled evaluation of inpatient and outpatient cognitive-behavior therapy for bulimia nervosa.

Inpatient (n = 27) and outpatient (n = 22) cognitive-behavior therapy programs for bulimia nervosa were evaluated in an uncontrolled experiment. Both treatment conditions included exposure with response prevention and cognitive restructuring. Inpatient treatment had a mean length of stay of 5 weeks. Outpatient treatment lasted 15 weeks. Both groups were followed after the end of treatment. The results showed that both programs were effective in reducing problems associated with bulimia nervosa. The inpatient program led to very rapid progress, whereas the outpatient program led to more gradual

Study of the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy versus dialectical behavior therapy on executive function and reduction of symptoms in generalized anxiety disorder.

INTRODUCTION: The effects of dialectical behavior therapy on generalized anxiety disorder have not been examined to date, whereas cognitive behavioral therapy is a well-known psychotherapy for generalized anxiety disorder. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy versus dialectical behavior therapy on executive function and reduction of symptoms in generalized anxiety disorder. METHOD: In the present study, 72 generalized anxiety disorder patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups: dialectical behavior therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy. …

Group dialectical behavior therapy skills training versus group cognitive behavioral therapy for adults with ADHD: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, emotion dysregulation, and executive dysfunction. Current treatment guidelines recommend a multimodal approach. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has proven effective for alleviating core symptoms, improving executive functioning, and reducing emotional comorbidities, with benefits sustained for up to one year. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an adaptation of CBT that integrates mindfulness and emotion regulation components, has also shown …

From Theory to Therapy: The Evolution and Future of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis in U.S. Mental Health Care.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for psychosis (CBTp) is an evidence-based intervention targeting distress and impairment associated with psychotic symptoms. Despite strong empirical support and international endorsement, it remains underutilized in U.S. psychiatric and forensic settings. This article traces CBTp's theoretical foundations and chronicles its U.S. development, highlighting key milestones, policy shifts, and clinical applications. A narrative review of cognitive-behavioral models, landmark trials, and federal and state implementation initiatives reveals CBTp's evolution from educatio

Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy vs Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain in Older Veterans: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Chronic pain is common and disabling in older adults, and psychological interventions are indicated. However, the gold standard approach, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), produces only modest benefits, and more powerful options are needed. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether emotional awareness and expression therapy (EAET) is superior to CBT for treatment of chronic pain among predominantly male older veterans and whether higher baseline depression, anxiety, or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms-key targets of EAET-moderate treatment response. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PART

Comparing systemic therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorders: study protocol for a randomized controlled pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent anxiety disorders in the general population. The efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorders is well demonstrated. However, only three studies point to the efficacy of systemic therapy (ST) in anxiety disorders, and only two of them especially focus on social anxiety disorders. These ST studies either do not use a good comparator but minimal supportive therapy, they do not use a multi-person ST but a combined therapy, or they do not especially focus on social anxiety disorders but mood and anxiety…

Mindfulness and acceptance-based group therapy and traditional cognitive behavioral group therapy for social anxiety disorder: Mechanisms of change.

The present study investigated mechanisms of change for two group treatments for social anxiety disorder (SAD): cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) and mindfulness and acceptance-based group therapy (MAGT). Participants were treatment completers (n = 37 for MAGT, n = 32 for CBGT) from a randomized clinical trial. Cognitive reappraisal was the hypothesized mechanism of change for CBGT. Mindfulness and acceptance were hypothesized mechanisms of change for MAGT. Latent difference score (LDS) analysis results demonstrate that cognitive reappraisal coupling (in which cognitive reappraisal is

The impact of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia on cognitive performance and amyloid beta in older adults: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Insomnia is associated with increased risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). It is unknown how cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) impacts two hallmarks of AD progression, cognitive performance and beta-amyloid (Aβ) burden. METHODS: Cognitively normal older adults with symptoms of insomnia were randomized into CBT-I treatment (n = 100) or control (n = 100) groups. Cognitive performance was assessed at baseline, 6-weeks, and 1-year (1 year). Aβ burden was assessed in a subsample (n = 50). RESULTS: No differences were observed between groups in change in cognitive perfo…

Cognitive Change across Cognitive-Behavioral and Light Therapy Treatments for Seasonal Affective Disorder: What Accounts for Clinical Status the Next Winter?

Efficacious treatments for seasonal affective disorder include light therapy and a seasonal affective disorder-tailored form of cognitive-behavioral therapy. Using data from a parent clinical trial, these secondary analyses examined the relationship between cognitive change over treatment with cognitive-behavioral therapy, light therapy, or combination treatment and mood outcomes the next winter. Sixty-nine participants were randomly assigned to 6-weeks of cognitive-behavioral therapy, light therapy, or combination treatment. Cognitive constructs (i.e., dysfunctional attitudes, negative automa

Cognitive behavioral therapy of socially phobic children focusing on cognition: a randomised wait-list control study.

BACKGROUND: Although literature provides support for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as an efficacious intervention for social phobia, more research is needed to improve treatments for children. METHODS: Forty four Caucasian children (ages 8-14) meeting diagnostic criteria of social phobia according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; APA, 1994) were randomly allocated to either a newly developed CBT program focusing on cognition according to the model of Clark and Wells (n = 21) or a wait-list control group (n = 23). The primary outcome measure was clini…

Responding With Evidence and Access for Childhood Headaches (REACH) study: A comparative effectiveness trial of cognitive behavioral therapy monotherapy versus combined cognitive behavioral therapy-pharmacotherapy with amitriptyline for the prevention of childhood migraine-The study protocol.

Migraine is one of the most common chronic health problems in children and adolescents, resulting in high levels of functional disability. Symptoms frequently persist into and impact the course of adulthood for affected individuals. Current practice recommendations include a combined therapy approach of preventive medication and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT); however, no trials have systematically assessed whether a combined therapy approach is superior to a cognitive behavioral monotherapy intervention. The REACH (Responding With Evidence and Access for Childhood Headaches) trial will co…

Symphony of healing: Investigating the effects of integrating music therapy with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dynamic interpersonal therapy (DIT) on depression.

Although Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are established treatments for depression, the effects of combining them with music therapy, a non-invasive, cost-effective adjunct, remain underexplored. In this multicenter randomized controlled trial (MC-RCT) with a four-arm parallel-group design, participants (n = 230) with DSM-5 MDD criteria from five major Iranian cities were randomized into four groups: Music Therapy + DIT, Music Therapy + CBT, Music Therapy alone, and Low-Intensity Therapy (LIT). Key outcome measures included the Hamilton Depression Rat…

Does Cognitive Behavior Therapy Change Socially Anxious Adolescents' Behavior during a Public Speaking Task?

Public speaking is one of the most commonly feared situations by socially anxious adolescents, often prompting behavioral anxiety markers including gaze avoidance and speech disruptions. While the potential adverse social consequences of behavioral anxiety markers in public speaking contexts have been established, research into how these markers might alter through cognitive behavior therapy is still in its infancy. In this preliminary study, we investigated changes in gaze behavior and speech disruptions from before to after 12 weeks of disorder-specific group cognitive behavior therapy among
