Air Pollution Neurotoxicity in the Adult Brain: Emerging Concepts from Experimental Findings.

Epidemiological studies are associating elevated exposure to air pollution with increased risk of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. In effect, air pollution accelerates many aging conditions that promote cognitive declines of aging. The underlying mechanisms and scale of effects remain largely unknown due to its chemical and physical complexity. Moreover, individual responses to air pollution are shaped by an intricate interface of pollutant mixture with the biological features of the exposed individual such as age, sex, genetic background, underlying diseases, and nut

Dihuang Yinzi Ameliorates Cognitive Impairments and Inhibits Ferroptosis in APP/PS1 Mice.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline and neuronal loss. Ferroptosis, a form of regulated cell death driven by iron overload and lipid peroxidation, has been implicated in AD pathology. DiHuangYinZi (DHYZ), a traditional Chinese herbal remedy, has been suggested to ameliorate cognitive impairments and reduce ferroptosis in AD models. This study aimed to investigate the effects of DHYZ on learning, memory, ferroptosis markers, and neuronal integrity in APP/PS1 transgenic mice. Six-month-old APP/PS1 transgenic mice were treated wi

Blockade of dopamine D1-family receptors attenuates the mania-like hyperactive, risk-preferring, and high motivation behavioral profile of mice with low dopamine transporter levels.

BACKGROUND: Patients with bipolar disorder mania exhibit poor cognition, impulsivity, risk-taking, and goal-directed activity that negatively impact their quality of life. To date, existing treatments for bipolar disorder do not adequately remediate cognitive dysfunction. Reducing dopamine transporter expression recreates many bipolar disorder mania-relevant behaviors (i.e. hyperactivity and risk-taking). The current study investigated whether dopamine D1-family receptor blockade would attenuate the risk-taking, hypermotivation, and hyperactivity of dopamine transporter knockdown mice. METHOD

EEG Connectivity as Predictor of ICAN ADHD Children's Improvement After Completion of Theta Beta Ratio Neurofeedback: Machine Learning Analyses.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a prevalent syndrome that costs billions of dollars annually. Finding meaningful interventions based upon predictive baseline EEG values can reduce uncertainty in symptom remediation. This study aims to deepen the understanding of ADHD neurophysiology and contribute to the development of personalized approaches in its treatment. This study retrospectively assessed EEG connectivity of participants in the International Collaborative ADHD Neurofeedback (ICAN) randomized controlled trial (7-10YO, N = 83) of theta/beta ratio neurofeedback (TBR-NFB). Using

The effect of combining working memory training with naming treatment on word retrieval and the generalization to discourse in individuals with aphasia: The mediating role of working memory.

Given the interdependence of working memory (WM) and language processing, mitigating cognitive "bottlenecks" remains a critical objective in aphasia rehabilitation to promote functional recovery. This study investigated the comparative efficacy of a language treatment (Phonological Component Analysis; PCA) versus a combined approach integrating PCA and WM training, specifically examining their effects on lexical retrieval and discourse performance. A 65-year-old male with chronic non-fluent aphasia (participant [HY]) was recruited for this single-subject ABAC experimental design, comprising an

Metabolism in Huntington's disease: a major contributor to pathology.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressively debilitating neurodegenerative disease exhibiting autosomal-dominant inheritance. It is caused by an unstable expansion in the CAG repeat tract of HD gene, which transforms the disease-specific Huntingtin protein (HTT) to a mutant form (mHTT). The profound neuronal death in cortico-striatal circuits led to its identification and characterisation as a neurodegenerative disease. However, equally disturbing are the concomitant whole-body manifestations affecting nearly every organ of the diseased individuals, at varying extents. Altered central and per

Speech rehabilitation in post-stroke aphasia using visual illustration of speech articulators: A case report study.

Recent studies on the remediation of speech disorders suggest that providing visual information of speech articulators may contribute to improve speech production. In this study, we evaluate the effectiveness of an illustration-based rehabilitation method on speech recovery of a patient with non-fluent chronic aphasia. The Ultraspeech-player software allowed visualization by the patient of reference tongue and lip movements recorded using ultrasound and video imaging. This method can improve the patient's awareness of their own lingual and labial movements, which can increase the ability to co

Neurogenetics of developmental dyslexia: from genes to behavior through brain neuroimaging and cognitive and sensorial mechanisms.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a complex neurodevelopmental deficit characterized by impaired reading acquisition, in spite of adequate neurological and sensorial conditions, educational opportunities and normal intelligence. Despite the successful characterization of DD-susceptibility genes, we are far from understanding the molecular etiological pathways underlying the development of reading (dis)ability. By focusing mainly on clinical phenotypes, the molecular genetics approach has yielded mixed results. More optimally reduced measures of functioning, that is, intermediate phenotypes (IPs),

Evaluating the psycholegal abilities of young offenders with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Individuals with a diagnosis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) experience a range of physical, cognitive, and behavioral deficits thought to interfere with their ability to competently navigate the arrest, interrogation, and trial process. This study examined the psycholegal abilities of young offenders with FASD, including their understanding and appreciation of Miranda rights, and adjudication capacities (factual knowledge of criminal procedure, appreciation of the nature and object of the proceedings, ability to participate in a defense and communicate with counsel). Logographic Kanji versus phonographic Kana in literacy acquisition: how important are visual and phonological skills?

It is well-established that phonological skills are important for literacy acquisition in all scripts. However, the role of visual skills is less well understood. For logographic scripts in which a symbol represents a whole word or a meaningful unit, the importance of visual memory in literacy acquisition might be expected to be high because of the visual complexity of logographic characters, but in fact its role remains poorly understood. The Japanese writing system uses both phonographic "Kana" and logographic "Kanji" scripts concurrently and thus allows for the assessment of the contributio

Brain age prediction in stroke patients: Highly reliable but limited sensitivity to cognitive performance and response to cognitive training.

Cognitive deficits are important predictors for outcome, independence and quality of life after stroke, but often remain unnoticed and unattended because other impairments are more evident. Computerized cognitive training (CCT) is among the candidate interventions that may alleviate cognitive difficulties, but the evidence supporting its feasibility and effectiveness is scarce, partly due to the lack of tools for outcome prediction and monitoring. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides candidate markers for disease monitoring and outcome prediction. By integrating information not only about

Differentiating Reinforcement Learning and Episodic Memory in Value-Based Decisions in Parkinson's Disease.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are impaired at incremental reward-based learning. It is typically assumed that this impairment reflects a loss of striatal dopamine. However, many open questions remain about the nature of reward-based learning deficits in PD. Recent studies have found that even simple reward-based learning tasks rely on a combination of cognitive and computational strategies, including one-shot episodic memory. These findings raise questions about how incremental learning and episodic memory contribute to decision-making in PD. We tested healthy participants (n = 26; 14

Improving mentalizing deficits in older age with region-specific transcranial direct current stimulation.

Older adults have difficulties to detect the intentions, thoughts, and feelings of others, indicating an age-associated decline of socio-cognitive abilities that are known as "mentalizing". These deficits in mental state recognition are driven by neurofunctional alterations in brain regions that are implicated in mentalizing, such as the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) and the dorso-medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC). We tested whether focal transcranial current stimulation (tDCS) of the rTPJ and dmPFC has the potential to eliminate mentalizing deficits in older adults. Mentalizing defici

Post-treatment reading development in children with dyslexia: the challenge remains.

The goal of this study was to examine the post-treatment development of word and pseudoword accuracy and fluency and its cognitive and linguistic predictors in Dutch children with dyslexia compared with typical readers in the upper primary grades. Word and pseudoword reading accuracy and fluency were assessed at the start and end of grade 5 and at the end of grade 6. Phonological awareness, rapid naming, verbal short-term memory, vocabulary, and visual attention span were assessed at the start of grade 5. Repeated measures ANOVAs revealed that children with dyslexia were less accurate than typ

Epilogue: language abilities in persons with dyslexia.

Language difficulties are common among individuals with dyslexia and warrant greater consideration across research, advocacy, and clinical practice. For almost a hundred years, language difficulties have been observed in individuals with dyslexia (e.g., Orton, 1928). However, in approximately half of all individuals with dyslexia, language difficulties meet the clinical criteria for developmental language disorder (DLD), an impairment in the comprehension and use of oral language (Bishop et al., 2017; Catts et al., 2003, 2005; Ramus et al., 2013). Even when language difficulties in dyslexia do
