BACKGROUND: Dengue is a neglected tropical disease, and Scrub typhus is an emerging tropical illness in Nepal. Coinfection between them is found in literature and clinical practice. The objective of this study is to describe and compare the demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics of patients with mono and coinfection of Dengue and Scrub typhus.
METHODS: This was a single-center hospital-based retrospective study, performed at Beni District Hospital, Nepal. The patient who was diagnosed with mono and coinfection of Dengue and Scrub typhus from 1st January 2020 to 16th September 2…

In regions endemic to both COVID-19 and dengue, cases of coinfections are possible. Since they have similar clinical presentations, but management might be different, it is crucial to identify these cases of coinfections. We diagnosed seven cases of dengue-COVID-19 coinfections. Fever, myalgia, rash and thrombocytopenia were found to be the common features. All patients recovered well with supportive treatment. We report this series to highlight the possibility of rare coinfections in endemic areas and the importance of a high index of suspicion, early diagnosis and prompt management.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloidiasis and Chagas disease are endemic in northern Argentina. In this study we evaluate the association between S. ster … R = 1.78) and was more prevalent in adults (Ma OR = 2.59; Mu OR = 2.69).
CONCLUSION: We found that coinfection between S. stercoralis and T. cruzi is not more frequent than chance in endemic areas. However, the high prevalence for both parasites, raises the need for an integrated strategy for the control of STH and Chagas disease.

We present a rare condition of mixed C. neoformans and C. gattii infection in a person living with HIV with false-negative CrAg LFA in the CSF and co-infection with paracoccidioidomycosis. Signs and symptoms are relative to respiratory tract and skin, confounding with other opportunistic disease. After negatives CrAg LFA and Indian ink staining in CSF, there was isolation of C. gattii in sputum and C. neoformans in CSF, in addition to reagent serology (double immunodiffusion) for PCM with 1/16 titer. The patient was treated with amphotericin B and TMP-SMX with good clinical response and recove

BACKGROUND: The role of respiratory coinfections at diagnosis of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PcP) on clinical impact has been underestimated.
METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted January 2011 to April 2019 to evaluate respiratory coinfections at diagnosis of PcP patients in 2 tertiary care hospitals. Coinfection was defined by identification of pathogens from P. jirovecii-positive samples.
RESULTS: Of 7882 respiratory samples tested for P. jirovecii during the 8-year study, 328 patients with diagnosis of PcP were included. Mean age was 56.7 (SD 14.9) years, 193 (5…

BACKGROUND: Helminth infections may modulate the inflammatory response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis and influence disease presentation and outcome. Strongyloides stercoralis is common among populations with high tuberculosis prevalence. Our aim was to determine whether S. stercoralis coinfection influenced clinical presentation, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) inflammation, and outcome from tuberculous meningitis (TBM).
METHODS: From June 2017 to December 2019, 668 Vietnamese adults with TBM, enrolled in the ACT HIV or LAST ACT trials (NCT03092817 and NCT03100786), underwent pretreatment S. sterco…

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is a highly competent vector in the transmission of arboviruses, such as chikungunya, dengue, Zika, and yellow fever viruses, and causes single and coinfections in the populations of tropical countries.
METHODS: The infection rate, viral abundance (VA), vector competence (VC), disseminated infection, and survival rate were recorded after single and multiple infections of the vector with 15 combinations of chikungunya, dengue, Zika, and yellow fever arboviruses.
RESULTS: Infection rates were 100% in all single and multiple infection experiments, except in 1 triple co…

Ticks and tick-borne pathogens are becoming an emerging threat to the health of both humans and animals. The number of cases of tick-borne diseases, especially Lyme disease, is constantly growing. Over the last several years, coinfections, which could be explained as presence of two of more pathogens in one organism are being observed with growing interest. Their occurrence may lead to severe or unusual symptoms, prolonged disease duration, diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties. Research on this subject concerns mainly ticks of the species Ixodes ricinus, however, literature data suggest tha…

This study aimed to characterize the cases of tuberculosis (TB) co-infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, after the notification sheet modification, and to verify the association between the new variables and the treatment outcome. It is an analytical cross-sectional study with TB/HIV cases notified in the year 2016 to the Brazilian Information System for Notifiable Diseases (Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação). Descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and multiple correspondence analysis were performed to verify the association between

INTRODUCTION: Despite the success of antiretrovirals, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfections continue to cause mortality. We investigated the prevalence of coinfections in women with HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in Sergipe, Brazil.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study. The coinfections investigated were syphilis, hepatitis B and C, toxoplasmosis, rubella, tuberculosis, and cytomegalovirus.
RESULTS: Among the 435 women, 85 (19.5%) had coinfections. The most prevalent was HIV/syphilis, followed by tuberculosis, toxoplasmosis, hepatitis C, hepatitis B, and rubella. A…

The burden of HIV and HCV coinfection is estimated to affect 5-7 million people worldwide, with approximately 15-30% of people with HIV coinfected with HCV. The first oral direct-acting antivirals have shown to improve the response in patients with HIV/HCV coinfection, and more recently, other direct-acting antivirals that target various stages of the HCV life cycle have been developed, among them daclatasvir. The objective of this article is to examine recent clinical studies investigating the efficacy and safety of daclatasvir in comparison with other antiretroviral drugs, focusing on its ef…

Herein, we present the case report of an adult male diabetic patient who had coinfection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and mucormycosis, which otherwise is a rare clinical entity. Diabetes mellitus may predispose a patient to tuberculosis (TB) infection which further weakens immune system thus making him susceptible to other fungal or bacterial infections which may pose various treatment difficulties. Therefore, there is a need for mycological and bacteriological investigations in patients with pulmonary TB to rule out secondary coinfections thus contributing to better management.

Only recently necrotizing pneumonia was defined as a specific disease entity that is caused by a Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-producing Staphylococcus aureus strain and is frequently preceded by an influenza infection. Necrotizing pneumonia is characterized by a sudden onset and rapid worsening of symptoms, leukopenia, airway hemorrhages, severe respiratory failure and a high mortality rate. Despite clear epidemiological data, the function of PVL in necrotizing pneumonia has been controversially discussed due to conflicting results from different disease models. Furthermore, there are man

Rifabutin has been substituted for rifampicin when treating tuberculosis (TB)/HIV coinfection. However, despite reports of anti-TB treatment failure and acquired rifamycin resistance, long-term clinical outcome data are lacking. Observational analyses performed in a UK TB/HIV cohort demonstrated no difference in severe adverse events, anti-TB treatment completion, relapse frequency or subsequent rifamycin resistance when rifampicin and rifabutin were compared, using different combinations of antiretroviral therapy. Our data support the wider use of rifabutin in TB/HIV coinfection.
