Laboratory and outdoor assessment of UV protection offered by flax and hemp fabrics dyed with natural dyes.

The safest protection from UV radiation (UVR) exposure is offered by clothing and its protectiveness depends on fabric composition (natural, artificial or synthetic fibers), fabric parameters (porosity, weight and thickness) and dyeing (natural or synthetic dyes, dye concentration, UV absorbing properties, etc.). In this study the UV protection properties of two fabrics made of natural fibers (flax and hemp) dyed with some of the most common natural dyes were investigated. UVR transmittance of fabrics was measured by two methods: one based on the utilization of a spectrophotometer equipped wit

Osmotic Pressure-Actuated Hydrogel Patch for Passive Sweat Extraction and Visual Sweat Glucose Monitoring at Rest.

Wearable biosensors enable real-time, non-invasive detection of biomarkers in human sweat, providing valuable information for health monitoring, and are regarded as a research focus for next-generation personalized healthcare devices. However, several significant challenges remain, such as efficient sweat extraction and the inherent instability of natural enzymes. Herein, a visual hydrogel patch designed for sedentary populations (e.g., the elderly) that operates based on an osmotic pressure-driven passive sweat extraction strategy is designed for sweat glucose detection. The hydrogel patch co

Structural Remodeling, Redox Regulation, and Metabolic Responses in Cold Plasma Pretreatment-Assisted Drying of Foods: A Critical Review.

Drying is widely used to stabilize foods, but long processing times and thermal exposure increase energy demand and can impair color, texture, nutrients, and flavor. Cold plasma (CP) pretreatment has attracted interest as a nonthermal strategy for accelerating moisture removal while maintaining product quality. This critical review examines CP pretreatment-assisted drying across food materials by linking structural remodeling with redox regulation and metabolic responses. Current evidence shows that changes in surface wettability, cuticular barriers, cell-wall and membrane integrity, and pore

Construction of MGO@ZIF-8@MIPs as peroxidase-like nanozyme for the targeted colorimetric detection of perfluorooctanoic acid in water and milk.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) poses a threat to the environment and human health due to its persistence, bioaccumulation, and reproductive toxicity. Developing and fabricating straightforward and selective sensors for the immediate identification of PFOA is substantial and demanding. In this paper, the advancement in the creation of molecularly imprinted sensors (MGO@ZIF-8@MIPs) utilizing magnetic graphene oxide (MGO) modified with metal-organic frameworks as substrates and catalytic agents is described. They were fabricated through surface imprinting technology for the quick identification an

Development of bait station to complement attract-and-kill agents of Zeugodacus tau (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Zeugodacus tau (Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is an important agricultural pest currently managed primarily through the application of insecticides due to limited control strategies. Bait station devices are target specific and have emerged as a behaviorally based alternative to traditional insecticide sprays for managing Z. tau. In this study, we designed a bait station by integrating female-biased olfactory, visual, and gustatory elements, and a killing agent in a wax-matrix. Our results showed that the wax-matrix integrated with spinetoram showed the highest toxicity to immature and mature

Efficacy of Entomopathogenic Staphylococcus Bacteria as a Biocontrol Agent against Rhipicephalus microplus Ticks: Assessing Reproductive Inhibition and Mortality Rates.

Rhipicephalus microplus is a persistent ectoparasite of cattle that causes bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis, causing economic losses worldwide. Chemical treatment is the primary method for tick control, but the emergence of pesticide-resistant ticks is a major challenge. Alternative biocontrol strategies utilizing entomopathogenic microorganisms are being explored. This study aimed to validate the species identification and assess the efficacy of four strains of Staphylococcus bacteria (S. shinii S1 and S-2, S. succinus, and S. xylosus) previously reported as being entomopathogenic to R. mic

Attractiveness of black and white modified Shannon traps to phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera, Psychodidae) in the Brazilian Amazon Basin, an area of intense transmission of American cutaneous leishmaniasis.

In the Amazon region the phlebotomine fauna is considered one of the most diverse in the world. The use of Shannon traps may provide information on the anthropophily of the species and improve the traps' performance in terms of diversity and quantity of insects collected when white and black colored traps are used together. This study sought to verify the attractiveness of the traps to the phlebotomine species of the Brazilian Amazon basin using Shannon traps under these conditions. The insects were collected using two Shannon traps installed side by side, one white and the other black, in a p

Embryonic mutation as a possible cause of in utero carcinogenesis in mice revealed by postnatal treatment with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate.

Although in utero irradiation at early stages induced a high incidence of somatic mutations at coat color genes in the embryos of a specified tester strain (PT x HT F1) of mice, it was not carcinogenic by itself. However, in utero-irradiated animals did develop skin tumors and hepatomas (but not leukemias) by the postnatal administration of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate. The incidence of both tumors and embryonic mutations increased with in utero doses of X-rays. Furthermore, a large reduction of tumor incidence, about 80%, was observed by low-dose-rate irradiation, similar to the 75% r

Rifampicin induced purpura of left lower limb: Illustrative medical image.

Rifampicin-induced purpura is a rare hypersensitivity reaction encountered during anti tubercular therapy (ATT). We report a 43-year-old male with cervical tubercular lymphadenitis who developed purpuric lesions with distinctive orange-colored serous discharge over the left lower limb after initiation of ATT. Investigations excluded thrombocytopenia and systemic vasculitis. A temporal relationship between drug intake and symptom onset confirmed rifampicin as the causative agent. Prompt withdrawal of rifampicin and initiation of systemic corticosteroids led to complete resolution of the lesions

Presentation and diagnosis of adult-onset Still's disease: the implications of current and emerging markers in overcoming the diagnostic challenge.

Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is a known cause of fever of unknown origin. It is characterized by a triad of symptoms: spiking fever (>39°C), salmon-colored rash and arthritis/arthralgia. On a predisposing genetic background, several conditions may act as trigger for disease and among these, infectious agents are the most important. Nowadays, a dichotomous view of AOSD has been introduced which distinguishes this entity in two subsets according to the clinical features and laboratory aspects: systemic or articular. As AOSD is a diagnosis of exclusion, specific biomarkers able to facilitat

Photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy action of phenothiazinium dyes in planktonic Candida albicans is increased in sodium dodecyl sulfate.

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) is an important therapeutic platform for antimicrobial activity, especially due to the resistant strains, however, the physical-chemical properties of the photosensitizers may affect the final outcome. Recently, this research group showed that the control of aggregation potentiates the PACT action of Methylene Blue. In this study, the researchers investigated the PACT action of other phenothiazinium dyes (PDs), such as Azure A, Azure B (AB), and 1,9-dimethyl methylene blue (DMMB), and the effects of different mediums which modulate PD

The phototoxicity of phenothiazinium derivatives against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

Phenothiazinium dyes, and derivatives, were tested for toxicity to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The dyes were generally lipophilic (log P>1) and showed inherent dark toxicity (minimum lethal concentrations: 3.1-1000 microM). Dye illumination (total light dose of 3.15 J cm(-1) over 30 min) led to up to eight-fold reductions in minimum lethal concentrations. Most of the illuminated dyes showed significant relative singlet oxygen yields (phi'delta: 0.18-1.35) suggesting a type II mechanism of generating a phototoxic response. Although generally up to six-fold more effective against

Assessment of tannic acid and glutathione in 38% silver diamine fluoride for dentine stain reduction with antibacterial efficacy: An in vitro study.

Silver diamine fluoride (38% SDF) is an effective agent for caries arrest, but its clinical use is limited by undesirable dentine staining. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the effect of tannic acid and glutathione as additives in SDF on stain reduction and antibacterial efficacy using standardized in vitro methods. Sixty dentine specimens were treated and assessed for color change (ΔE) and antimicrobial activity (CFU counts), showing that tannic acid significantly reduced staining while maintaining antibacterial efficacy comparable to SDF alone. Glutathione demonstrated moderate stain
