Dental caries and associated factors among Turkish children and adults: Findings from the 3rd National Oral Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Information on the current status of oral health and related risk factors is lacking in Turkiye. This study aimed to evaluate dental caries and associated factors among the Turkish population using the findings of the third national oral health survey. METHODS: This cross-sectional epidemiological survey was carried out between March and September in 2018 including five index ages and age groups (5-, 12-, 15-year-olds, 35-44 and 65-74 age groups). A multistage cluster sampling design was used to obtain a national representative sample of these age groups. Participants were intervi

Differential effect of social mobility on tooth loss by race in adulthood: 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between social mobility and tooth loss in adults from the 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort Study and whether race modifies this association. METHODS: The Oral Health Study used data from 541 individuals who were followed up to 31 years of age. Social mobility, composed of the participants' socioeconomic position (SEP) at birth and at age 30, was categorized as never poor, upwardly mobile, downwardly mobile and always poor. The outcome was the prevalence of at least one tooth lost due to dental caries when the participants were examined at 31 years of age. The e

Restricting Periodontal Treatment Frequency: Impact on Tooth Loss in Danish Adults.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to estimate the effect of a periodontal treatment policy that would restrict the receipt of periodontal therapy to no more than once every second year, on the 10-year risk of tooth extraction among Danish adults. METHODS: Data from linked nationwide Danish registers consisted of a random sample of 20 000 50-year-olds who were followed from the beginning of 1990 to the end of 2021. The longitudinal modified treatment policies' causal inference framework was used. In each of two slightly different counterfactual scenarios, the receipt of supragingival or subgingival p

Caries lesions progression in adults: A prospective 2-year cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Dental caries is one of the most prevalent chronic non-communicable diseases worldwide. There is a lack of evidence, especially in adult populations, documenting caries disease progression considering lesion severity, activity and tooth surface-level characteristics. The study aimed to investigate the extent to which primary active caries lesions in adults affect caries lesions progression compared with inactive caries lesions over a 2-year follow-up period, considering their severity, surface and tooth type. METHODS: A prospective study data set from a cohort of workers in a facto

Association between overweight/obesity and dental outcomes in early childhood: Findings from an Australian cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Oral health is an important part of general health and well-being and shares risk factors, such as poor diet, with obesity. The published literature assessing the association between obesity and oral health in early childhood is sparse and inconsistent. The objective of this study was to investigate associations between overweight/obesity (measured by body mass index) and dental outcomes (caries, plaque index and gingival index) both cross-sectionally and longitudinally, taking account of potential confounding factors, based on data collected at age 2 and age 5 within the Australia

Causal analyses in longitudinal observational studies in oral health: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Causal analysis including causal inference and causal mediation is pivotal to inform effective interventions. In modern epidemilogy, causal analysis involves four key steps: formulating causal questions, employing directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), conducting data management and selecting statistical strategies. Our objective was to conduct a scoping review to assess how longitudinal observational studies (LOSs) in dental field have integrated these four steps to contribute leverage evidence that inform oral public health interventions. METHODS: LOSs focusing on determinants of dental

School-Based Fluoride Mouth-Rinse Programs and Dental Caries Treatment Expenditure: An Ecological Study of the NDB Open Data Japan.

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of dental caries is high in Japan, leading to a huge burden of overall expenditure on dental caries treatment for the population. School-based fluoride mouth-rinse (S-FMR) has been implemented as a public health intervention. However, its cost-effectiveness remains unclear, where universal health insurance covers a broad range of dental treatments at relatively low cost. The aim of the study was to determine whether S-FMR is associated with lower dental caries treatment expenditure in Japan, where the universal health insurance system widely covers dental treatments.

Investigating the perceptions and experiences of Canadian dentists on dental regulatory bodies' communications and guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: Dental regulatory bodies aim to ensure the health and safety of dentists, dental staff patients and the public. An important responsibility during a pandemic is to communicate risk and guidelines for patient care. Limited data exist on the perceptions and experiences of dentists navigating new guidelines for mitigating risk in dental care during the pandemic. The objective of this study was to use a qualitative approach to explore how dentists in Canada experienced and perceived their regulatory bodies' communication about COVID-19 risks and guidelines during the pandemic. METHODS:
