Dramatically increasing incarceration rates in the United States have led to large concentrations of formerly imprisoned people in poverty-stricken urban areas. Therefore, identifying ways to help inmates who exhibit multiple, serious problems and who are at great risk of experiencing poor postrelease outcomes is especially important to urban communities, as well as to service providers and policymakers concerned about these communities. Our research provides evidence about the effectiveness of one strategy, called Health Link, which recruited adult women and adolescent men while they were inc

INTRODUCTION: There is limited information about the experiences and educational needs of health professionals who may be required to provide care for people with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) especially in the later stages of the disease. The aim of this study was to determine the experiences of, and need for, education of these health professionals.
METHODS: Interviews and focus groups were conducted with 31 health professionals with some experience in providing palliative care for people with MND. Thematic content analysis was used to identify common themes.

BACKGROUND: Similar to other countries in the region, South Africa is currently reorienting a loosely structured and highly diverse community care system that evolved around HIV and TB, into a formalized, comprehensive and integrated primary health care outreach programme, based on community health workers (CHWs). While the difficulties of establishing national CHW programmes are well described, the reshaping of disease specific and care oriented community services, based outside the formal health system, poses particular challenges. This paper is an in-depth case study of the challenges of im

The perspectives of formerly homeless, older women are absent in the academic literature on aging and homelessness. In this study, a group of formerly homeless women, aged 45 years and older were surveyed (N = 15) and interviewed (n = 11) about their experiences with health, housing, and aging. The qualitative themes to be explored include the women's perceptions of their current health, coping with low incomes, dealing with addictions to alcohol and drugs, and the importance of supportive housing and other community services. The female participants' views on adapting to home, planning for th

OBJECTIVE: To identify the influence of a community health nurse (CHN) home visit on perceived barriers to contraceptive access and contraceptive use self-efficacy.
METHODS: We enrolled 103 women into two groups in a randomized trial evaluating the influence of contraceptive dispensing and family planning counseling during home visits on perceived barriers to accessing contraceptives and contraceptive use self-efficacy. Both groups received counseling by a CHN about sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy prevention, and a resource card listing phone numbers of family planning clinics. Aft

In April 1991, an oral health situation analysis team comprising oral health professionals from the Alaska Area Native Health Service, the World Health Organization, and the Moscow Medical Stomatological Institute visited the Magadan region of the Soviet Far East at the request of the Ministries of Health of both the Russian Republic and the then-Soviet Union. As few oral health data had been available specific to the Magadan region, the purpose of the trip was to gather data concerning oral diseases epidemiology, demography, and health systems of the communities of Magadan, Seymchan, and Prov

Government engagement with communities are critical for achieving health equity goals. The available literature is plentiful on community and civil society's barriers to meaningful participation. However, considerably less documentation abounds on how to address barriers to equal interaction within the participatory process, with concrete interventions tested and assessed. This paper aims to bridge that research gap by studying community engagement for health policymaking in Madagascar, focusing on how policy makers can design interaction with communities in a way which decreases power imbalan

Portugal recognizes the importance of self-care in its policies and has been actively engaging in health literacy and citizen empowerment. The current National Health Plan for the period 2021-2030 clearly mentions the need to "take greater advantage of the network of community pharmacies throughout the national territory, in favour of the health of the community, from the protection and promotion of health, through health literacy, to the prevention and early detection of disease, and the aggravation of chronic disease, among others". There is recognition of the role of pharmacists and communi

Until recently, surgery had been passed over in the domain of global health, historically being described as "the neglected stepchild of global health." Knowledge of the existing global disparities in neurosurgical care has led to neurosurgery capacity-building efforts especially in low-income and middle-income countries. While many global collaborative projects are currently undertaken with philanthropic support, sustainability and scalability are not likely without governmental adoption of neurosurgery-inclusive national surgical plans. Momentum grows for the global neurosurgery community to

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders are more prevalent in urban areas; urban living has been linked to increased risk of anxiety, mood, and schizophrenia disorders. These associations may be partially explained by the social and physical urban environment. While traffic-related exposures such as air pollution and noise have been linked to adverse mental health outcomes, the role of road infrastructure and traffic in severing communities and breaking down the social fabric-termed community severance-remains understudied.
METHODS: We conducted ZIP code-level analyses (2011-2014) to investigate

BACKGROUND: While social accountability is integrated into clinical training at many institutions, its role in medical scholarly projects remains unexplored. While much has been studied on social accountability in medical education and service, little is known about how it is approached in research. Therefore, we examined whether community partnerships were included in student plans, the community's role in the research process, and health equity outcomes as measures of social accountability.
METHODS: We approached this observational study in two stages. In stage 1, we reviewed medical studen

Telemedicine and telehealth (TM/TH) are the 2 terms used interchangeably focusing on the delivery of health care services at a long distance using telecommunication technology. TM/TH has several gynecologic applications, including the well-woman visits, preventive care, preconception counseling, family planning including contraception and medical abortion, infertility workup, teleradiology, cervical cancer screening and colposcopy, mental health, and telesurgery. The goals of TM/TH are not only improving quality of health care in patients and building a virtual community of physicians but also

BACKGROUND: Globally, community engagement is an integral part of most public health programs and the social mobilization (SM) intervention of India's polio eradication program is one such example that contributed to eliminating polio from the country. CORE Group Polio Project (CGPP), a partner of Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) SM Network executed its activities through a network of social mobilizers called Community Mobilization Coordinators (CMCs). These were deployed in polio high risk areas to perform awareness generation and trust-building activities with communities and achieved high coverage of p

Trachoma, a disease caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, is the leading infectious cause of blindness. To fight it, endemic East African countries adopted the World Health Organization's SAFE Strategy, targeting surgery, antibiotics through mass drug administration (MDA), facial cleanliness and environmental improvement. Trachoma persists among nomadic communities along the Kenya-Uganda and Kenya-Tanzania borders. To address this, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda launched synchronized MDA campaigns, simultaneously treating populations across borders. Successes included joint planning, community involvem

During emergencies, the health system will be overwhelmed and challenged by various factors like staff absenteeism and other limited resources. More than half of the workforce in Liberia has been out of work since the start of the Ebola outbreak. It is vital to continue essential services like maternal and child health care, emergency care and others while responding to emergencies like an Ebola outbreak other pandemic or disaster. Having a business continuity plan (BCP) and involving various sectors during planning and implementing the plan during a crisis will assist in providing essential s

Prognosticated heat waves in the context of climate change require appropriate strategies to prevent harmful health effects in the population. In a model project within the public health department of the Kassel region, elderly living in areas at risk of over-heating will be identified and advised. The localization of high-risk residential areas was part of the planning process. Through mapping of demographic and microclimate data and the characteristics of the material of the residential buildings, high-risk areas that require preventive measures as a top priority were identified. The prevent

The virtual conference 'Transforming Care: Supporting Older Adults Post-COVID in Ontario' was held in October 2021. It was organized by Specialized Geriatric Services (SGS) East and held over three half-days. The guiding themes included: The Need, The Innovation, and The Transformation. Over 500 participants heard from ~50 clinicians, researchers, administrators, older adults, care partners, and community partners. The pandemic uncovered and exacerbated existing issues and pushed us to explore new ways to support older adults living with complex health conditions. The following key priorities
