Community navigation to reduce institutional recidivism and promote recovery: initial evaluation of opening doors to recovery in Southeast Georgia.

New approaches for preventing repeated inpatient psychiatric stays, detention in jails and prisons, and homelessness among individuals with serious mental illnesses with established histories of such recidivism, while promoting recovery, are direly needed. We present findings from an initial program evaluation of a new community-based, recovery-oriented "community navigation" program in southeast Georgia, called Opening Doors to Recovery. Twenty-three in-depth interviews were conducted with key stakeholders, program participants, community navigation specialist team members, and referring ment

Bicornuate Uterus with Third Trimester Fetal Demise in a Non-Communicating Rudimentary Uterine Horn: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Bicornuate uterus is a rare congenital uterine anomaly that occurs due to incomplete fusion of the mullerian ducts during fetal development, resulting in a single cervix and two uterine horns with partial to complete separation with or without communication between the cavities. Pregnancy in a rudimentary non-communicating uterine horn of a bicornuate uterus is an even rare occurrence, usually due to transperitoneal migration of sperms or zygote, and it is often associated with fetal demise and uterine rupture. We report a case of a bicornuate uterus unicollis with a third-trimeste

Niche differentiation and plasticity in soil phosphorus acquisition among co-occurring plants.

How species coexist despite competing for the same resources that are in limited supply is central to our understanding of the controls on biodiversity1,2. Resource partitioning may facilitate coexistence, as co-occurring species use different sources of the same limiting resource3,4. In plant communities, however, direct evidence for partitioning of the commonly limiting nutrient, phosphorus (P), has remained scarce due to the challenges of quantifying P acquisition from its different chemical forms present in soil5. To address this, we used 33P to directly trace P uptake from DNA, orthophosp

Barriers to Accessing Intimate Partner Violence Resources Among Latina Immigrants: A Scoping Review.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among women in the United States. Although intervention services exist, resources are limited, and barriers persist for many. These challenges are particularly pronounced among the growing population of Latina immigrants, who face significant obstacles to accessing such services. We conducted a scoping review to identify and synthesize research focusing on barriers to accessing IPV resources among Latina immigrants. We searched PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and SocINDEX. Two authors independently screened each article by t

Mahi tahi (working together) and the lessons learned from implementating a concussion management pathway for community rugby in New Zealand: Haerenga (our journey).

Concussion guidelines are widely available, but implementing them consistently in community sport remains difficult. Common barriers include limited access to medical care, reliance on volunteers, fragmented communication, and sporting cultures that may discourage reporting. In response, New Zealand Rugby developed and refined over multiple seasons, a community Concussion Management Pathway (CMP), to operationalise World Rugby's principles of 'Recognise and Remove' in real-world community settings. This editorial reflects on lessons learned from the design, implementation, and iterative refine

Primary care networks: an opportunity to improve community wound care.

Primary care networks (PCNs) were introduced in England in 2019 to bring about closer collaboration between general practice and community health services. The ambition is that greater collaboration between services will achieve better patient outcomes and reduce costs through more effective sharing of staff and resources. Wound care might be considered an ideal focus for PCNs, since general practice and community health services not only have a predominant role in the management of wounds, but variable and suboptimal practice continues and poor outcomes persist. This article investigates some

Occurrence of mesocarnivores in montane sky islands: How spatial and temporal overlap informs rabies management in a regional hotspot.

Interspecific interactions among mesocarnivores can influence community dynamics and resource partitioning. Insights into these interactions can enhance understanding of local ecological processes that have impacts on pathogen transmission, such as the rabies lyssavirus. Host species ecology can provide an important baseline for disease management strategies especially in biologically diverse ecosystems and heterogeneous landscapes. We used a mesocarnivore guild native to the southwestern United States, a regional rabies hotspot, that are prone to rabies outbreaks as our study system. Gray fox

Analysis of hospital ability to provide trauma services: a comparison between teaching and community hospitals.

HYPOTHESIS: Teaching hospitals (TH) can maintain the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACSCOT) criteria for Level II trauma care more consistently than can community hospitals (CH). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 2,091 trauma system patients was done to determine if TH in an urban area are better able to meet the criteria for Level II trauma care than are CH. During the study period, a voluntary trauma plan existed among five hospitals; two TH and three CH. A hospital could accept patients that met trauma system entry criteria as long as, at that moment, it could provide

Community stakeholders' perspectives on supporting the well-being of older adults: a focus group study on lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: By 2050, one in four Dutch residents will be aged 65 years or older, intensifying the need to sustain older adults' well-being amid growing pressure on health and social care systems. The COVID-19 pandemic served as a stress test, revealing both vulnerabilities and resilience in the support for older adults. METHODS: We conducted a focus group study to examine the requirements for promoting the well-being of community-dwelling older adults in the context of increasingly constrained health and social care systems, as perceived by community care professionals, informal caregivers, o

Evolution of the humanitarian roster system for sexual and reproductive health.

Evidence suggests that the number, scale, and severity of emergencies exceed the international humanitarian system's existing capacity and available resources to meet humanitarian needs, especially for the health sector of which sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is an essential component. Since 1997, the Inter-Agency Working Group on Reproductive Health in Crises's Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) for SRH has been the standard of care for SRH interventions in emergencies, aimed to protect the health, dignity, and rights of women and girls living in humanitarian emergencies. Barriers and enablers in implementing integrated primary health care: A qualitative assessment in West Sumbawa District, Indonesia.

In 2023, Indonesia introduced an integrated primary health care (IPHC) model called Integrasi Pelayanan Kesehatan Primer (ILP) as part of the national primary care transformation agenda. ILP seeks to strengthen the network of public primary care providers across sub-district, village, and community levels with a five-cluster model organized around a life-cycle approach, replacing the previously fragmented, program-based model. West Sumbawa District (WSD) in West Nusa Tenggara Province was chosen as a national pilot district by the Ministry of Health (MOH), with ILP implementation expanding fro

Social capital and community resilience to socio-natural hazards in informal settlements of Chile's extractive north: city of Copiapó, Atacama region, Chile.

Informal settlements in Chile's extractive cities concentrate structural vulnerability and exposure to multiple socio-natural hazards, including mass movement processes, flooding, and fires, among others. The article asks: how do different forms of social capital translate into differentiated capacities for resilience (coping, adaptive, transformative) in the face of the hazards confronting informal settlements in the mining city of Copiapó, Atacama Region? The discussion combines research methods applying semi-structured interviews with community leaders and institutional actors, and particip

Strategies to reach and motivate migrant communities at high risk for TB to participate in a latent tuberculosis infection screening program: a community-engaged, mixed methods study among Eritreans.

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, migrant populations with a high tuberculosis (TB) incidence are an important target group for TB prevention. However, there is a lack of insight in effective community-engaged strategies to reach and motivate these migrants to participate in latent TB infection (LTBI) screening and treatment programs. METHODS: In cocreation with Eritrean key figures and TB staff, we designed and executed six strategies to reach and motivate Eritrean communities to participate in LTBI programs, in five regions in the Netherlands. We registered participation in LTBI education and
