The paper describes some effects of interaction between different types of parasitic infections on the diagnostic capacity of immunological tests for parasitic diseases. Examples shown include an analysis of association for anergy to tuberculin in skin tests of individuals with and without skin manifestations of onchocerciasis; skin tests with P. westermani and C. sinensis antigens to detect double infections in patients harbouring both trematodes; geographical evaluation of the sensitivity of the complement fixation (CF) test for schistosomiasis with S. mansoni antigen between different commu

The purposes of the present work were: i) to study the positivity indices and compare titers obtained with the indirect immunofluorescence (II), tube precipitation (TP), complement fixation (CF) and double immunodiffusion on agar gel (ID) tests in the sera of 196 patients with paracoccidioidomycosis before treatment, and ii) to compare the initial titers of II with those obtained 1 year or more after treatment. II was the most sensitive serologic reaction (85.2%), and the positivity indices for CF, ID and TP were 67.7%, 66.0% and 50.0%, respectively. The sera tended to show parallel mean titer

Forty-eight adult patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) (onset before age 16 years) were evaluated at the age of 17 years or more for the presence of hidden 19S IgM rheumatoid factors (RF), i.e., 19S IgM RF that can be detected by the complement-dependent haemolytic assay in the IgM-containing fraction after separation of the serum by acid gel filtration. The average age of the patients was 25.3 years. The mean duration of disease was 16.5 years. Thirty-two of 48 patients (67%) showed the presence of hidden 19S IgM RF in their serum. Disease activity correlated with hidden RF titre

A comparison was made of the diagnostic value of five immunological tests-complement fixation (CF), latex agglutination (LA), bentonite flocculation (BF), passive haemagglutination (PHA), and intradermal (ID)-in patients operated on for pulmonary echinococcosis. The sensitivity of all five tests was significantly lower in the patients with pulmonary echinococcosis than in a comparable group with liver echinococcosis. Some 252 patients with miscellaneous nonhydatid diseases and parasitic infections were also tested; nonspecific reactions were highest in the ID and CF tests and lowest in the LA

The studies reported in this review indicate that, whereas the expectations from the molecular approach help to excite and enlighten us, the realities suggest that even some less modern approaches may provide the necessary practical solutions to problems of serology and vaccination against coccidioidomycosis. Concurrent conduct of the two approaches should maximize the chances for success.

Bacteriol. 91:422-427. 1966.-At least two antigen-antibody systems in coccidioidomycosis have been demonstrated by immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoresis, including the use of I(131)-coccidioidin. Sera which were positive in the conventional complement-fixation (CF) test, but negative in the tube precipitin (TP) test, yielded only one line of precipitate in the immunodiffusion test. In immunoelectrophoresis, also, there wa

In 1980 and 1981, sera of 256 small wild mammals (rodentia, insectivora, carnivora) were collected in Piemonte and Southern Italy. They were then tested for antibody against 12 arboviruses by haemagglutination inhibition and complement fixation tests. In the North of the country, 42.8% of sera were found positive against Tahyna or Sicilian Sandfly fever viruses. In the Southern provinces, 44.3% of sera reacted with Bhanja, West Nile or other flaviviruses, Tahyna, Sicilian Sandfly fever and Arumowot viruses. These results lead to suspect the possible role of some small mammals (muridae, Clethri…

Bacteriol. 89:943-948. 1965.-Antigens of 14 strains of the psittacosis-lymphogranuloma venereum (PLV) group of organisms were prepared by treating purified particles with deoxycholate and trypsin. In complement-fixation tests of these antigens with the homologous and heterologous antisera, specific serotype differences were observed. Application of the method of specificity differences permitted placement of the 14 strains into 7

This work reports on the results of double immunodiffusion (ID), counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE), complement fixation (CF) and indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) techniques in the serodiagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis. The study was undertaken on four groups of individuals: 46 patients with untreated paracoccidioidomycosis, 22 patients with other deep mycoses, 30 with other infectious diseases (tuberculosis and cutaneous leishmaniasis) and 47 blood donors as negative controls. Data were obtained using Paracoccidioides brasiliensis antigens, i.e., a yeast culture filtrate for ID, CIE and CF

In 1979 an indirect haemagglutination test (gonococcal antibody test) using gonococcal pilus antigen replaced the gonococcal complement fixation test as our routine procedure to show gonococcal antibodies. In the diagnosis of current gonorrhoea the sensitivity of the gonococcal antibody test was far superior to that of the gonococcal complement fixation test (about 55% versus 9% for first episode gonorrhoea). To evaluate the usefulness of the test result the following population groups were studied: 1376 patients undergoing medical examination for gonorrhoea (386 had gonorrhoea), 1384 healthy

The diagnostic value of toxoplasma serology in ocular toxoplasmosis is a controversial issue. Some authors feel that a positive titer indicates nothing more than that the patient had been exposed to Toxoplasma gondii at some stage. Even if in most cases the diagnosis is based on the morphological findings on the fundus, it might sometimes be useful to have an additional serologic evaluation. In a retrospective study we compared the level of antitoxoplasmosis antibodies (measured in a complement fixation test and an immunofluorescence test) in 75 patients with clinically proven ocular toxoplasm
