Prevalence of personality disorders in adults with binge eating disorder-A systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis.

Binge eating disorder (BED) is a complex mental health problem entailing high risk for obesity, overweight, and other psychiatric disorders. However, there is still unclear evidence of the prevalence of personality disorders (PDs) in BED patients. We conducted a systematic review and a Bayesian meta-analysis for studies examining the prevalence of any PD in adult BED patients. Data sources included PubMed, Cochrane library, EBSCO, PsycINFO, and Science Direct. A Bayesian meta-analysis was conducted to estimate effect sizes for the prevalence of any PD in BED patients. Twenty eligible articles

Sniffing around oxytocin: review and meta-analyses of trials in healthy and clinical groups with implications for pharmacotherapy.

The popularity of oxytocin (OT) has grown exponentially during the past decade, and so has the number of OT trials in healthy and clinical groups. We take stock of the evidence from these studies to explore potentials and limitations of pharmacotherapeutic applications. In healthy participants, intranasally administered OT leads to better emotion recognition and more trust in conspecifics, but the effects appear to be moderated by context (perceived threat of the 'out-group'), personality and childhood experiences. In individuals with untoward childhood experiences, positive behavioral or neur

Reported sexual abuse and subsequent psychopathology among women attending psychology clinics: the mediating role of dissociation.

OBJECTIVE: While there is now a good clinical research base that outlines the links between reported sexual abuse and psychological symptoms and disorders, there is less of an understanding of the psychological processes mediating that relationship. This study assessed the role of dissociation as a mediator between reported sexual abuse and a range of psychopathological characteristics. DESIGN: A patient-series design was used. METHOD: Participants were an unselected sample of 45 women attending clinical psychology services. Each woman was interviewed regarding a reported history of sexual a

Overview: narcissistic personality disorder.

The authors trace the evolution of narcissistic personality disorder as a nosological entity in a critical survey of the literature, considering and comparing differing theoretical viewpoints regarding the genesis of this disorder. They review its various descriptions, including the one in DSM-III, and develop a composite picture of the syndrome. The disorder consists of characteristic deficits in six broad areas of functioning: 1) self-concept, 2) interpersonal relationships, 3) social adaptation, 4) ethics, standards, and ideals, 5) love and sexuality, and 6) cognitive style. The authors ide

Transdiagnostic Extension of Delusions: Schizophrenia and Beyond.

Delusion is central to the conceptualization, definition, and identification of schizophrenia. However, in current classifications, the presence of delusions is neither necessary nor sufficient for the diagnosis of schizophrenia, nor is it sufficient to exclude the diagnosis of some other psychiatric conditions. Partly as a consequence of these classification rules, it is possible for delusions to exist transdiagnostically. In this article, we evaluate the extent to which this happens, and in what ways the characteristics of delusions vary according to diagnostic context. We were able to exami

Interpersonal, affective and compulsive features of driven exercise in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: This preregistered (https://osf.io/g9ajb) analysis sought to integrate the current literature on trait compulsivity into maintenance models of driven exercise in anorexia nervosa (AN). We tested whether compulsivity increases the likelihood of driven exercise via interpersonal and affect-regulatory pathways. METHODS: We used multilevel structural equation modeling to test the hypothesis that trait compulsivity predicts a stronger within-person link between affect-regulatory difficulties or interpersonal sensitivity and driven exercise in female adolescents and adults with AN. We u

Aberrant personality tendencies and academic success throughout engineering education.

OBJECTIVE: In a longitudinal field study, we investigated the predictive associations between six aberrant personality tendencies (schizotypal, avoidant, borderline, antisocial, narcissistic, obsessive-compulsive) and academic success of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics students. METHOD: Bachelor students of Industrial Engineering at a Dutch technical university (N = 432, Mage  = 18.45; 87.3% male) filled out the NEO-PI-R and aberrant tendencies were operationalized by the five-factor model (FFM) compound technique. Social Media Addiction in Young Adult Patients with Anxiety Disorders and Depression.

OBJECTIVE: Although the relationship between social media addiction (SMA) and mental health is bidirectional, there have been very few attempts to investigate patients with depression or anxiety disorders in terms of SMA. The first aim of this study is to determine whether young adult patients diagnosed with depression or anxiety disorders have a tendency to become addicted to social media. The second aim of the study is to examine the effects of 6 DSM-based personality traits (dependent, histrionic, narcissistic, obsessive-compulsive, borderline, and paranoid) that commonly coexist with these

BEYOND POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD): STATE OF THE ART ON PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDERS IN WHICH EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING (EMDR) CURRENTLY SHOWS CLINICAL EFFICACY.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) was originally developed as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but its applications have expanded significantly in recent years. This narrative review explores the current state of evidence for EMDR's clinical efficacy across a spectrum of psychological disorders beyond PTSD. We examine findings from randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses - including the comprehensive systematic review by Scelles and Bulnes (2021) - that assess EMDR's impact on anxiety disorders, depression, obsessive-compulsi

Mind-Body Connection: Cardiovascular Sequelae of Psychiatric Illness.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. Mental health disorders are associated with the onset and progression of cardiac disease. The adverse sequelae of this association include worsened quality of life, adverse cardiovascular outcomes, and heightened mortality. The increased prevalence of CVD is partly explained by increased rates of traditional cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, obesity, and smoking, but mental illness is an independent risk factor for CVD and mortality. Given the associat

Predicting expressed emotion: a study with families of obsessive-compulsive and agoraphobic outpatients.

The authors used structural equation modeling to examine expressed emotion (EE) in relatives of outpatients with panic disorder with agoraphobia (n = 42) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (n = 60). EE was examined as a function of patients' illness and personality and as a function of characteristics of relatives themselves. EE was operationalized in terms of hostility on the Camberwell Family Interview (C. E. Vaughn & J. P. Leff, 1976) and patients' ratings of their relatives' criticism (perceived criticism). Key findings include the identification of a characteristic of the relative (self-rep

The Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden (CATSS).

The Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden (CATSS) is an ongoing longitudinal twin study targeting all twins born in Sweden since July 1, 1992. Since 2004, parents of twins are interviewed regarding the children's somatic and mental health and social environment in connection with their 9th or 12th birthdays (CATSS-9/12). By January 2010, 8,610 parental interviews concerning 17,220 twins had been completed, with an overall response rate of 80%. At age 15 (CATSS-15) and 18 (CATSS-18), twins and parents complete questionnaires that, in addition to assessments of somatic and mental health, inc

Comorbidity of obsessive-compulsive disorder and anorexia nervosa - diagnostic difficulties: a case study of a 14-year old girl.

PURPOSE: The objective of this paper is to present the comorbidity of anorexia nervosa (AN) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and to note the need for caution during the diagnostic process. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of a 14-year old girl raised in a reconstructed family. The primary diagnosis was AN, which was changed to OCD in the course of hospitalisation. Symptoms of OCD and AN occurred in close time proximity and involved excessive focus on appearance, beautifying rituals disrupting circadian rhythm, rigid behaviours, school absence, and social isolation. In further therap

Borderline and schizotypal personality disorders treated with low-dose thiothixene vs placebo.

Fifty outpatients with borderline and/or schizotypal personality disorder were randomly allocated to thiothixene (Navane) or placebo treatment that was continued for 12 weeks. The mean daily dosage of thiothixene hydrochloride in the final week of the study was 8.7 mg, a lower dosage than is used in outpatient schizophrenics. Significant drug-placebo differences were found, regardless of diagnosis, on "illusions," "ideas of reference," "psychoticism," "obsessive-compulsive symptoms," and "phobic anxiety," but not on "depression." Thiothixene seems to have more than an antipsychotic effect. Sin

Study of compulsive buying in patients presenting obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The authors assessed the prevalence of compulsive buying (CB) among patients presenting an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). They compared the buying style of patients with and without CB. METHOD: One thousand five hundred consecutive patients were assessed by a general practitioner in Paris (France). Sixty patients presenting with OCD were included. Patients with CB associated with OCD (n = 14) were compared with those with "pure" OCD (n = 46). Sixty patients paired for sex and age and free from OCD, depression, and anxiety were also recruited among the clients of the same gene

Dysfunctional personality beliefs and executive performance in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: This article intends to verify the association of dysfunctional beliefs of personality disorders with the executive performance in people with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). METHODS: Fifty-two patients (35 women, 67.3%) with JME aged 18-50 yrs. (32.3 ± 9.7) were evaluated between May 2017 and April 2018 and compared with controls. All subjects were submitted to the Personality Beliefs Questionnaire (PBQ) (Beck & Beck, 1991; Savoia et al., 2006), Dysexecutive Questionnaire (DQ; Wilson et al., 1996; Macuglia et al., 2016), estimated intelligence quotient (IQ) using Vocabulary an

Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids: What is Their Role in Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders?

In the central nervous system omega-3 fatty acids modulate cell signaling and affect dopaminergic and serotonergic pathways. On this basis, a new application for omega-3 fatty acids has been proposed, concerning the treatment of several psychiatric disorders. The present article is an update of a previous systematic review and is aimed to provide a complete report of data published in the period between 1980 and 2019 on efficacy and tolerability of omega-3 fatty acids in psychiatric disorders. In July 2019, an electronic search on PUBMED, Medline and PsychINFO of all RCTs, systematic reviews a

Personality and cognitive vulnerability in remitted recurrently depressed patients.

INTRODUCTION: Personality disorders (PDs) have been associated with a poor prognosis of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The aim of the current study was to examine cognitive vulnerability (i.e., dysfunctional beliefs, extremity of beliefs, cognitive reactivity, and rumination) that might contribute to this poor prognosis of patients with PD comorbidity. METHODS: 309 outpatients with remitted recurrent MDD (SCID-I; HAM-D17 ≤ 10) were included within two comparable RCTs and were assessed at baseline with the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4(+) (PDQ-4(+)), the Dysfunctional Attitude Scale

Are the eating disorders related to obsessive compulsive disorder?

The evidence supporting the idea that the eating disorders of anorexia and bulimia nervosa may be related to obsessive compulsive disorder is reviewed with respect to studies in phenomenology, comorbidity, neurotransmitters, central nervous system functional metabolism, and treatment and outcome. Although no definitive conclusion can be drawn, research generated from the idea has refined our thinking on the eating disorders.

Shame aversion and shame-proneness in Cluster C personality disorders.

The associations between shame and Cluster C personality disorders (PDs) were examined in 237 undergraduates, 35 of whom met at least subthreshold criteria for Cluster C PDs assessed using the Personality Disorder Interview-IV. Shame-proneness (the propensity to experience shame across many situations) was measured using the Test of Self-Conscious Affect-3, and shame aversion (the tendency to perceive shame as especially painful and undesirable) was measured using the Shame-Aversive Reactions Questionnaire. A go/no-go association task was used to assess the strength of implicit mental represen
