Is Ophthalmia Neonatorum Associated With Invasive Bacterial Infection? A Single-Center Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVE: Ophthalmia neonatorum (ON) is a conjunctivitis occurring in neonates and can be caused by multiple bacterial pathogens. The risk of invasive bacterial infection (IBI) in neonates with ON is poorly known. Our objectives were to document the association of ON with IBI in term neonates and to investigate practice variation. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study of all neonates who presented to a single emergency department (ED) between January 2018 and December 2019. Participants were all children with a final diagnosis of ON according to the treating physician as regi

Bacterial contamination of multi-use antibiotic steroid eye ointments and drops.

PURPOSE: This comprehensive prospective study aimed to investigate the bacterial contamination of antibiotic steroid eye ointments and drops frequently used by eye patients. METHOD: In this comprehensive prospective study, a total of 410 multi-use topical eye medications containing 15 different ingredients from 22 pharmaceutical companies used by 185 patients were analyzed. Four groups were formed as follows: group 1: antibiotic ointments (n: 109); group 2: antibiotic drops (n: 103); group 3: steroid ointments (n: 67); and group 4: steroid drops (n: 131). Topical multi-use eye drops and ointm

[How to prescribe topical antibiotics in ophthalmology].

Given the increase in bacterial resistance, antibiotics use has been carefully studied during the last decade. In France, topical antibiotics have therefore been restricted to medical prescription, and specific guidelines were published by the French Agency for the Safety of Healthcare Products (AFSSAPS) in 2004. This article reviews the literature on emerging bacterial resistance in ophthalmology, and summarizes the AFSSAPS guidelines.

Improving acute eye consultations in general practice: a practical approach.

There is significant evidence that patients with acute eye symptoms are poorly assessed in primary care. There is a tendency to diagnose viral or bacterial conjunctivitis in any acutely red eye. This has led to delays in treatment and in some cases, permanent loss of sight. The aim of this project was to improve acute eye consultations within the Birchwood Medical Practice. The project focused on the "red flag" findings that would identify patients who require referral for same-day ophthalmology assessment. A retrospective baseline audit was carried out on all cases read-coded "conjunctivitis"

[THE FIRST CASE OF OCULAR THELAZIASIS IN CROATIA].

The first case of ocular thelaziasis in a human male patient in Croatia is presented. Thelaziasis is a zoonosis caused by nematodes of the genus Thelazia, parasites of the conjunctival bags or tear ducts of mammals and birds. Two types of the genus Thelazia (T.) have been described as causes of infection in humans, T. callipaeda and T. californiensis. To date, less than 300 thelaziasis cases in humans have been reported. This zoonosis is very rare in humans in European countries, with a high incidence in Asian countries, especially in China, Thailand and Japan. Because of the high prevalence o

Vernal-like conjunctivitis in a western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla).

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 17-year-old female western lowland gorilla presented with bilateral ocular discharge, conjunctivitis, and rhinitis that was investigated and treated over a 34-month period. Clinical findings, diagnostic results, treatment, and follow-up are described. CLINICAL FINDING: A mild intermittent mucoid ocular discharge was initially noted. 10 months later, conjunctival hyperemia and thickening developed and progressed rapidly to a mass-like lesion covering the right eye. Hematology revealed eosinophilia. Conjunctival cytology revealed eosinophils and neutrophils, and histopatholo

Feline chlamydiosis.

Chlamydiae are an important cause of acute and chronic conjunctivitis in cats. Until recently, only one organism was thought to infect cats, Chlamydophila felis (previously Chlamydia psittaci var. felis). Recently, other Chlamydia-like organisms belonging to the family Parachlamydiaceae, which comprises organisms that reside and proliferate within free-living amoeba, have been identified in cats with neutrophilic and eosinophilic conjunctivitis. The relative importance of these organisms and their amoebic hosts requires investigation. There is also weak evidence that chlamydiae may also be cap

Collagen content and types in trachomatous conjunctivitis.

PURPOSE: To study alterations in conjunctival collagen in the conjunctiva of patients with active trachoma. METHODS: We studied conjunctival biopsy specimens obtained from nine subjects with active trachoma and from four control subjects. We used immunohistochemical techniques and a panel of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies directed against types I, III, IV and V collagen. RESULTS: In normal conjunctiva, the staining for types I and III collagen was localised to the substantia propria. Type IV collagen was located in the epithelial and capillary endothelial basement membranes. The staini

A rapid dot immunoassay for detecting the Brazilian purpuric fever clone of Haemophilus influenzae biogroup aegyptius with a "flow through" device.

Brazilian purpuric fever (BPF) is a highly fatal pediatric disease that may follow an episode of purulent conjunctivitis caused by a virulent clone of Haemophilus influenzae biogroup aegyptius (Hae). Oral rifampin prophylaxis, by eliminating carriage of the BPF clone in children with conjunctivitis, may prevent onset of the systemic disease. A test to detect the BPF clone directly from eye swabs could identify those in need of prophylaxis. This is a preliminary report of a rapid dot immunoassay performed on a "flow-through" cartridge that was developed for use under field conditions. The test

Coagulase-negative staphylococci in conjunctivitis and blepharitis.

Coagulase-negative staphylococcus (C-NS) are regarded as normal flora of the lids and conjunctiva. The ability of these organisms to cause conjunctivitis and blepharitis can be overlooked or disregarded. To elucidate the role of individual C-NS species in these eye diseases we compared Staphylococcus sp. isolated from the conjunctiva and lids of 50 healthy volunteers with 248 strains of Staphylococcus isolated from patients with staphylococcal conjunctivitis or blepharitis. S. epidermidis was the most frequent species isolated from the conjunctiva and lids of both groups. S. aureus was isolate

[Parinaud's oculo-glandular syndrome secondary to cat-scratch disease].

A 56 year old patient with an oculo-glandular syndrome of Parinaud, secondary to a cat scratch disease, is presented. The biopsy of the palpebral conjunctiva and parotid gland showed a non-caseous granulomatosis. The patient met the diagnosis criteria for cat scratch disease and, after treatment with a low dosage of steroids, showed a good evolution.

A closed-loop audit of the prescription practice of topical antibiotics for acute infective conjunctivitis.

Objective: The implementation of guideline recommendations for antibiotics prescription for the management of patients with acute infective conjunctivitis (AIC) in primary care departments remains below par. Our objective was to assess the impact of clinical audit on adherence to evidence-based indications for prescription of antibiotic eye drops in patients diagnosed with AIC, in the setting of a primary care practice in western Greece. Methods: We conducted a retrospective audit to evaluate the current prescription practice of antibiotics for the management of AIC. Following evidence-based i
