Contact surveillance is a valuable strategy for controlling leprosy. A dynamic cohort study of leprosy contacts was initiated in 1987 at Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. The objective of this work was to review the data on the major risk factors leading up to the infectious stage of the disease, estimate incidence rates of leprosy in the cohort and characterise the risk factors for the disease among the contacts under surveillance. The tuberculin skin test (TST) has limitations in children who are under the Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) effect. Our aim was to evaluate the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-G IT) blood test for Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in children and to compare results with those of the TST. Trichomoniasis is a common but less well known sexually transmitted infection affecting men and women. In men it is often asymptomatic and goes undetected. In women it can produce a profuse, frothy, unpleasant-smelling vaginal discharge with pruritus and soreness which is sometimes confused with vulvo-vaginal candidiasis (thrush) and bacterial vaginosis. Since vaccination is critical in responding to smallpox exposure, vaccination strategies must be evaluated during bioterrorism preparedness. Information on historical factors, smallpox characteristics, public health capabilities and hypothetical attack scenarios was used to evaluate major vaccination strategies. In event of a smallpox attack, the optimal strategy is situational, mass vaccination may be best for dense island populations such as Oahu.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk of tuberculosis (TB) transmission from family members with infectious TB to other family members, and to examine whether household contact investigations had an impact on tuberculosis patterns.
DESIGN: Under the direction of the Taipei Municipal Chronic Disease Hospital, 12 full-time public health nurses recruited the household contacts of TB patients. Chest X-ray examination was recommended for adult contacts. Child contacts received the Mantoux tuberculin skin test, and radiography was recommended if the results were positive.

Reports of 217 HIV-1 infected persons have been investigated. Initially, 122 were described as having no identified risk of HIV infection and 95 were described as probably infected through heterosexual intercourse.
