An innovative and collaborative partnership between patients with rare disease and industry-supported registries: the Global aHUS Registry.

BACKGROUND: Patients are becoming increasingly involved in research which can promote innovation through novel ideas, support patient-centred actions, and facilitate drug development. For rare diseases, registries that collect data from patients can increase knowledge of the disease's natural history, evaluate clinical therapies, monitor drug safety, and measure quality of care. The active participation of patients is expected to optimise rare-disease management and improve patient outcomes. However, few reports address the type and frequency of interactions involving patients, and what resear

Analysing collaboration among HIV agencies through combining network theory and relational coordination.

Agencies with different foci (e.g. nutrition, social, medical, housing) serve people living with HIV (PLHIV). Serving needs of PLHIV comprehensively requires a high degree of coordination among agencies which often benefits from more frequent communication. We combined Social Network theory and Relational Coordination theory to study coordination among HIV agencies in Baltimore. Social Network theory implies that actors (e.g., HIV agencies) establish linkages amongst themselves in order to access resources (e.g., information). Relational Coordination theory suggests that high quality coordinat

[Intermittent urinary catheterization and collaboration between the stoma nurse and psychologist].

Intermittent urinary catheters can be prescribed in cases of urogenital disorders. The child and the family undergo a long process to adapt and learn a new way of life requiring regular stoma care. The stoma nurse specialist and psychologist work together to ensure the follow-up and therapeutic education of the children and their families as well as the coordination of the different partners involved in helping the child gain their autonomy.

Images of eyes enhance investments in a real-life public good.

A key issue in cooperation research is to determine the conditions under which individuals invest in a public good. Here, we tested whether cues of being watched increase investments in an anonymous public good situation in real life. We examined whether individuals would invest more by removing experimentally placed garbage (paper and plastic bottles) from bus stop benches in Geneva in the presence of images of eyes compared to controls (images of flowers). We provided separate bins for each of both types of garbage to investigate whether individuals would deposit more items into the appropri

Intersectoral collaboration between the medical and veterinary professions in low-resource societies: The role of research and training institutions.

BACKGROUND: Neglected zoonoses continue to significantly affect human health in low-resource countries. A symposium was organised in Antwerp, Belgium, on 5 November 2010 to evaluate how intersectoral collaboration among educational and research institutions could improve the situation. RESULTS: Brucellosis and echinococcosis were presented as models for intersectoral collaboration. Low-resource societies face evident knowledge gaps on disease distribution, transmission within and across species and impact on human and animal health, precluding the development of integrated control strategies.

Altruism or solidarity? The motives for organ donation and two proposals.

Proposals for increasing organ donation are often rejected as incompatible with altruistic motivation on the part of donors. This paper questions, on conceptual grounds, whether most organ donors really are altruistic. If we distinguish between altruism and solidarity--a more restricted form of other-concern, limited to members of a particular group--then most organ donors exhibit solidarity, rather than altruism. If organ donation really must be altruistic, then we have reasons to worry about the motives of existing donors. However, I argue that altruism is not necessary, because organ donati

The impact of group membership on collaborative learning with wikis.

The social web stimulates learning through collaboration. However, information in the social web is often associated with information about its author. Based on previous evidence that ingroup information is preferred to outgroup information, the current research investigates whether group memberships of wiki authors affect learning. In an experimental study, we manipulated the group memberships (ingroup vs. outgroup) of wiki authors by using nicknames. The designated group memberships (being fans of a soccer team or not) were completely irrelevant for the domain of the wiki (the medical disord

Aspiring to the fittest and promotion of cooperation in the prisoner's dilemma game.

Strategy changes are an essential part of evolutionary games. Here, we introduce a simple rule that, depending on the value of a single parameter w , influences the selection of players that are considered as potential sources of the new strategy. For positive w players with high payoffs will be considered more likely, while for negative w the opposite holds. Setting w equal to zero returns the frequently adopted random selection of the opponent. We find that increasing the probability of adopting the strategy from the fittest player within reach, i.e., setting w positive, promotes the evoluti

Supportive housing approaches in the Collaborative Initiative to Help End Chronic Homelessness (CICH).

The Federal Collaborative Initiative to Help End Chronic Homelessness funded 11 sites to expand permanent housing and offer supportive services to persons experiencing chronic homelessness and suffering from mental and substance use disorders. This study examines qualitative data on how the projects used US Department of Housing and Urban Development funding and three housing approaches (scattered units, congregate/clustered, or a combination) for rapid placement of clients. Each housing approach called for adaptations by the services teams and property personnel in order to support clients wi

[Acute coronary syndrome - a challenge for the cooperation between outpatient and inpatient care].

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) summarizes all phases of coronary heart disease, which are imminently life-threatening. In clinical practice, these are unstable angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, and sudden cardiac death. As the transitions between these clinical entities are smooth, it has been established during the last years to distinguish patients based on ECG findings in groups with (STEMI) and without ST segment elevation (NSTEMI/unstable angina pectoris). Because of the life-threatening character of this disease, continuous monitoring and immediate diagnostic evaluation are ma

Fighting rabies in Africa: the Africa Rabies Expert Bureau (AfroREB).

Rabies experts from 14 francophone African countries met in Grand Bassam (Côte d'Ivoire), 10-13 March 2008. They presented the situation in their respective countries, acknowledging the lack of rabies awareness among the population, health care workers and health authorities. They recognized that infrastructure for the management of rabies exposure is scarce, modern vaccines are in limited quantity and immunoglobulins are lacking in most of their countries. They defined as a priority the need to have reliable figures on the disease burden, which is necessary for informed decision making and pr

Development of information regarding susceptibility to heat illness using the cooperative extension agency model in Kentucky.

CONTEXT: Dissemination of information regarding the latest research findings in rehabilitative health care is often limited to professional journals. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the paper is to describe opportunities to better distribute scientific information to wider swaths than normally contained within a readership of a journal, to describe a process to deliver important information via the Cooperative Extension Service, and provide an example of such an informational brochure. DESIGN: An interdisciplinary approach was developed to provide access to a larger cohort of individuals the lates

A comparison of elderly participants in a community survey with nonparticipants.

In 1982-83, 4,485 persons ages 65 or older were identified by a household census in East Boston, MA: 3,812 (85 percent) of them responded to a health and social status questionnaire. Data on age, sex, and living arrangements for the 4,485 eligible people were analyzed with respect to final participation status and reason for refusal or reluctance. The health and social status of reluctant and ready self-respondents were compared, and respondents-by-proxy were compared with self-respondents. Total participation rates were similar for both sexes and all ages, but the likelihood of interview by p

Reinforcement Learning-Based Approach for Minimizing Energy Loss of Driving Platoon Decisions.

Reinforcement learning (RL) methods for energy saving and greening have recently appeared in the field of autonomous driving. In inter-vehicle communication (IVC), a feasible and increasingly popular research direction of RL is to obtain the optimal action decision of agents in a special environment. This paper presents the application of reinforcement learning in the vehicle communication simulation framework (Veins). In this research, we explore the application of reinforcement learning algorithms in a green cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) platoon. Our aim is to train member vehic

Exchanging expertise and constructing boundaries: The development of a transnational knowledge network around heroin-assisted treatment.

Over the last 20 years, supervised injectable and inhalable heroin prescribing has been developed, tested and in some cases introduced as a second line treatment for limited groups of entrenched heroin users in a number of European countries and Canada. Based on documentary analyses and eleven key informant interviews, this paper investigates the growth of 'expertise' and the sharing of knowledge between scientific stakeholders from different countries involved in researching and developing this area of treatment. Drawing on Stone's concept of the 'knowledge network' (Stone, 2013) and Gieryn's
