Cytotoxic lesion of corpus callosum after COVID-19 vaccination: case report.

PURPOSE: Cytotoxic lesions of corpus callosum (CLOCCs) are associated with many disease entities. Serious neurological complications after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination are rare. CASE REPORT: A 20-year-old man presented with severe headache for 2 days. He had received the first dose of ChAdOx1nCoV-19 COVID-19 vaccine 5 days ago. Persistent dull headache occurred on the third day after vaccination and intensified gradually to awaken him from sleep at night. No neck stiffness was observed. Brain magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) 9 days after vaccination revealed an oval-sha…

Corpus Callosum Length and Cerebellar Vermian Height in Fetal Growth Restriction.

INTRODUCTION: Growth-restricted fetuses may have changes in their neuroanatomical structures that can be detected in prenatal imaging. We aim to compare corpus callosal length (CCL) and cerebellar vermian height (CVH) measurements between fetal growth restriction (FGR) and control fetuses and to correlate them with cerebral Doppler velocimetry in growth-restricted fetuses. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort of FGR after 20 weeks of gestation with ultrasound measurements of CCL and CVH. Control cohort was assembled from fetuses without FGR who had growth ultrasound after 20 weeks of gestat

[Mild encephalitis/encephalopathy with a reversible splenial corpus callosum lesion (MERS)].

INTRODUCTION: Mild encephalitis/encephalopathy with a reversible isolated splenial corpus callosum lesion (MERS) is a clinical-radiological syndrome characterized by a lesion in the center of the splenium identified by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the imaging test of choice. CASE REPORT: A 31-year-old man is admitted with fever, intense hemicranial headache, disorientation, dysarthria and paresthesia in the lips and both upper extremities is presented; and that he is admitted for a suspected diagnosis of viral encephalitis. The cerebrospinal fluid analysis shows an elevation of proteins …

Whole-exome sequencing identifies mutated c12orf57 in recessive corpus callosum hypoplasia.

The corpus callosum is the principal cerebral commissure connecting the right and left hemispheres. The development of the corpus callosum is under tight genetic control, as demonstrated by abnormalities in its development in more than 1,000 genetic syndromes. We recruited more than 25 families in which members affected with corpus callosum hypoplasia (CCH) lacked syndromic features and had consanguineous parents, suggesting recessive causes. Exome sequence analysis identified C12orf57 mutations at the initiator methionine codon in four different families. C12orf57 is ubiquitously expressed an…

Microcephaly thin corpus callosum intellectual disability syndrome caused by mutated TAF2.

BACKGROUND: The combination of microcephaly, pyramidal signs, abnormal corpus callosum, and intellectual disability presents a diagnostic challenge. We describe an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by microcephaly, pyramidal signs, thin corpus callosum, and intellectual disability. METHODS: We previously mapped the locus for this disorder to 8q23.2-q24.12; the candidate region included 22 genes. We performed Sanger sequencing of 10 candidate genes; to ensure other genes in the candidate region do not harbor mutations, we sequenced the exome of one affected individual. RESULTS: We id…

Autosomal recessive hereditary spastic paraplegia with thin corpus callosum among Saudis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the mutational and clinical spectrum of spatacsin associated with autosomal recessive hereditary spastic paraplegia (ARHSP) with thin corpus callosum (TCC). METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from February 2008 until March 2011. Four unrelated Saudi Arabian families with ARHSP-TCC were studied, totaling 13 affected individuals. Clinical presentations included gait disturbance at variable ages (2-18 years), spastic paraplegia with mild to moderate cognitive impairment and evidence of p…

Prospective neuroimaging study in hereditary spastic paraplegia with thin corpus callosum.

Our objective was to estimate the frequency as well as to establish the clinical and neuroimaging profile of hereditary spastic paraplegia with thin corpus callosum (HSP-TCC). HSP-TCC was recognized as a specific clinical subtype of HSP and mapped to chromosome (ch) 15q13-15 in Japanese families. It has been considered rare in western countries. We assessed 45 patients with autosomal recessive HSP from 20 different families in search of clinical and imaging criteria for the diagnosis of HSP-TCC. In addition, HSP-TCC patients underwent further neurological, imaging and genetic evaluation. MRI s…

Recombinant inbreeding in mice reveals thresholds in embryonic corpus callosum development.

The inbred strains BALB/cWah1 and 129P1/ReJ both show incomplete penetrance for absent corpus callosum (CC); about 14% of adult mice have no CC at all. Their F(1) hybrid offspring are normal, which proves that the strains differ at two or more loci pertinent to absent CC. Twenty-three recombinant inbred lines were bred from the F(2) cross of BALB/c and 129, and several of these expressed a novel and severe phenotype after only three or four generations of inbreeding - total absence of the CC and severe reduction of the hippocampal commissure (HC) in every adult animal. As inbreeding progressed…

Corpus callosum morphology and ventricular size in chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

In this paper, novel methods were used to map the corpus callosum morphology of children with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome in order to further investigate changes to that structure and to examine their possible effects on cognitive function. The callosal profiles were extracted from the centermost MRI midsagittal slice by supervised thresholding and the structure's boundary and midline were computed automatically. Difference analysis was based on non-rigid registration, in which a template image is warped to conform to the shape of each corpus callosum in the sample. Boundaries and mid…

Levodopa-responsive parkinsonism in hereditary spastic paraplegia with thin corpus callosum.

Hereditary spastic paraplegia with thin corpus callosum is a rare degenerative disease, which is characterized by a progressive weakness of the lower limbs with a hypoplastic corpus callosum, and is often associated with other symptoms such as mental impairment, amyotrophy, sensory disturbances, dysuria, nystagmus and cataract. We describe two siblings (brother and sister) who showed a thin corpus callosum on MRI, one of whom showed the pure form of progressive spastic paraplegia, while the other showed predominant levodopa-responsive parkinsonism. The present cases are illustrative of a pheno…

[Bilateral carotid artery agenesis with corpus callosum hypogenesis--a case report].

To date, only 21 cases of bilateral absence of the internal carotid artery have been reported. The authors report a case of bilateral internal carotid artery agenesis combined with corpus callosum hypogenesis and cavum vergae. A 47-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of occasional vertigo. Physical and neurological findings were normal except for severe mental retardation. Bilateral carotid angiograms showed the absence of both internal carotid arteries. Left vertebral angiography demonstrated filling of the right and left anterior and middle cerebral arteries by the posterio…

Corpus callosum and limbic system: neuroanatomic MR evaluation of developmental anomalies.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a complex malformation of the brain that has been associated with varying degrees of limbic system maldevelopment. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 11 patients with callosal agenesis (seven total, four partial) who underwent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, with particular attention to the associated malformations of the limbic system. Comparison was made with selected images from MR examinations of healthy volunteers and with necropsy specimens from other patients with callosal agenesis. Ten of 11 patients demonstrated limbic anomalies (severe moti…

Cytotoxic Lesions of the Corpus Callosum Associated With Addison's Disease: A Case Report.

Cytotoxic Lesions of the Corpus Callosum (CLOCCs) are transient splenial lesions typically triggered by infections, trauma, or metabolic disturbances. This report documents a unique case of a 13-year-old girl with CLOCCs secondary to Addison's disease, an association not previously reported. The patient initially presented with lethargy, fever, and hyperpigmentation of the skin and gingiva. Investigations revealed profound hyponatremia (121 mmol/L) and hypoosmolality, while a brain MRI confirmed a cytotoxic lesion in the splenium. Although meningoencephalitis was initially suspected, markedly …

Cytotoxic Lesion of the Corpus Callosum in a Patient with Acute-on-chronic Lithium Toxicity.

A 30-year-old woman with history of bipolar disorder presented to the emergency department with impaired consciousness and myoclonus following regular lithium treatment. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed a hyperintense lesion in the splenium of the corpus callosum, consistent with cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum (CLOCCs). Serum lithium levels were markedly elevated (3.54 mmol/L), and acute-on-chronic lithium toxicity was diagnosed. Hemodialysis and supportive care resulted in clinical and radiological recovery. This case highlights that CLOCCs may serve as important neuroimagi…

Excitotoxic lesion in the corpus callosum of neonatal rats: A model for encephalopathy of prematurity.

Encephalopathy of prematurity (EP) can develop in preterm infants exposed to risk factors like extreme prematurity, low birth weight, hypoxia, infections, and inflammation. These factors can induce excitotoxicity in the brain's gray and white matter, leading to the death of neurons and oligodendrocyte progenitors. Understanding the brain mechanisms of EP requires animal models. In this study, we generated an EP model by injecting N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) into the corpus callosum (CC) of neonatal male rats on postnatal day (PND) 5. Rats were divided into five groups: Intact, Vehicle, and…
