Neutralisation techniques used by defendants charged with animal welfare offences in Finland.

Animal welfare offences encompass a heterogeneous range of crimes, including violence and various forms of negligence toward animals' needs. However, there is limited understanding of the offenders' rationalisations concerning their criminal behaviour against animals, despite this information being essential for enhancing the prevention of these crimes. Our data comprised 1,443 judgements in animal welfare offences in Finland between January 2011 and May 2021. We categorised the rationalisations used by defendants and identified differences between offender profiles according to the offence ty…

Same-Sex Relationships and Criminal Behavior: A Total Population Study in The Netherlands.

Sexual minority groups experience elevated risk across a range of adverse outcomes. Previous studies from the USA showed that these risks include contact with the criminal justice system for sexual minority females but not for males. This study examined whether this relationship between sexual minority status and criminal behavior was also found in a more secular country like the Netherlands with more progressive attitudes toward sexual minorities. Furthermore, the study aimed to examine whether this relationship applied to various types of crime and could be explained by unmeasured familial f…

Victimization in the Grain Tower: A Study of the Effect of Community Perceptions on Victimization Risk and Perceived Wellness in a Rural Environment.

Social science research has studied the role of neighborhood order in explaining perceptions of crime and official crime statistics for decades. When citizens perceive their neighborhood to be socially and/or physically disordered, community and interpersonal relationships diminish, mistrust increases, including negative perceptions of police legitimacy, and overall individual wellness decreases. However, little is known about these interactions within a college population-neighborhoods referred to as "studentification" and described as "student ghettos." Using an online survey distributed to …

Genetic and molecular alterations in olfactory neuroblastoma: implications for pathogenesis, prognosis and treatment.

UNLABELLED: This study examines the potential of alternative micro-geographic units of analysis compared to the widely used rectangular grid for predicting (monthly) micro-geographic crime risks using a machine learning approach. Specifically, this study compares the prediction performance of machine learning models (XGBoost) in deriving monthly micro-geographic risk predictions for three crime types across rectangular and hexagonal grids of varying resolutions, as well as street segments, using the hit rate, precision, and F1-score as key performance measures. Police-registered data on reside…

Local Violence as an Environmental Exposure with Increasing Relevance under Climate Change: A Conceptual Framework.

Violent crime is increasing worldwide with climate change and ambient heat, with greater increases projected in communities already high in crime or lacking resources for mitigation, exacerbating inequities in exposures and health. Our work has shown that violent crime-as a severe psychosocial stressor-can exacerbate effects of climate-related heat and pollution on health. In addition, as heat is associated with greater violence, and both heat and violence are shown to negatively influence child mental and physical health, some proportion of heat impacts on health may plausibly be mediated thr…

Experiences of recent hate-related violence and their association with mental and physical health among people living with HIV in Atlanta, Georgia.

BACKGROUND: People with HIV (PWH) are disproportionately affected by violence. The majority of violence research has focused on intimate partner violence, childhood abuse, gender-based violence, and sexual violence more generally. Less research has examined community violence among PWH. In this analysis, we test the association between hate crime experience and mental and HIV outcomes in a sample of adults with HIV, majority of whom are Black/African American, living in Atlanta, Georgia. SETTING: PWH were recruited from HIV service settings (N = 285) to participate in a cross-sectional study.…

Drug spend and acquisitive offending by substance misusers.

AIM: The need to generate income to fund drug misuse is assumed to be a driver of involvement in acquisitive crime. We examined the influence of drug misuse expenditure, and other factors, on acquisitive offending. METHODS: Clients (N=1380) seeking drug treatment within 94 of 149 Drug Action Teams (DATs) across England completed a comprehensive survey, incorporating validated scales and self-report measures, such as levels of drug and alcohol use and offending. RESULTS: Forty per cent (N=554) had committed acquisitive crime in the previous month. Regression analysis showed that acquisitive o…

Forensic Microbiology: Challenges in Detecting Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Sexual assault crimes consist of acts committed without consent and represent a major global issue with serious implications for victims. These acts have both short- and long-term consequences on the physical, mental, and sexual health of victims, with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) being one of the direct outcomes of such crimes. Sexually transmitted infections constitute a serious global public health problem and can lead to severe consequences. These infections may be caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites and are transmitted through sexual contact. Some of the most common STIs a…

The risk of criminal behavior in the elderly and patients with neurodegenerative disease.

Behavioral changes are commonly observed in patients with dementia and can lead to criminal offenses, even without a history of criminal or antisocial behavior. Due to the growth of the aging population, this poses a rising problem to deal with for the criminal justice system and in general for society. Criminal behavior may include minor crimes such as theft or traffic violations, but also serious crimes such as physical abuse, sexual offense, or murder. In the assessment of criminal behavior among elderly (first-time) offenders, it is important to be aware of possible neurodegenerative disea…

Criminal convictions among dependent heroin users during a 3-year period prior to opioid maintenance treatment: a longitudinal national cohort study.

This study investigates frequency and types of criminal convictions among a national sample of heroin users during a 3-year period prior to opioid maintenance treatment (OMT). All heroin users (N = 3,789) in Norway who applied for and were eligible for OMT (1997-2003) were included. The OMT records were cross-linked to Norwegian crime statistics. During observation, 24,478 convictions were recorded among 60.9% of the sample. Differences of criminal convictions were found within the group; a large proportion (39.1%) had no convictions, whereas 10% of the sample was responsible for 37.8% of all …

[Three criminal cases with Asperger's disorder: how their handicap was reflected in their antisocial behaviors].

Three patients with Asperger's disorder who were sent to Juvenile Court for sexual offenses are presented, and the relationship between this disorder and their crimes is discussed. All three adolescents showed unusual behaviors related to their crimes. The analysis of these cases suggested: 1) the idiosyncrasies seen in the crimes were closely related to their social deficits and obsessive traits, which are the two major problems in pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), 2) their offensive behaviors were not the direct results of their deficits due to PDD, and 3) their criminal behaviors shou…

The Trend of Online Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitations: A Profile of Online Sexual Offenders and Criminal Justice Response.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of technology-facilitated crimes against children worldwide has increased substantially and become one of the most serious crime problems. Due to these considerations, there is a lack of large-scale systematic reviews investigating Cybercrime in and of itself could be challenging to investigate in comparison to traditional ones due to the elusiveness of the cyber realm. Specifically, investigating internet crimes against children comes with specific challenges. These offenses target vulnerable children who are less likely to realize their victimization,…

A natural experiment study of the effects of imprisonment on violence in the community.

One of the goals of imprisonment is to reduce violence1. Although imprisonment has risen dramatically since the 1970s, its effects on future violent crime are poorly understood2. This study's objective was to examine the effect of imprisonment on violent crime in the community among individuals on the policy margin between prison and probation sentences. Drawing on data from a population-based cohort of individuals convicted of a felony in Michigan between 2003 and 2006 (n = 111,110) and followed through June 2015, we compared the rates of commission of violent crime committed by individuals s…

Homelessness, mental illness, and criminal activity: examining patterns over time.

This study examined whether street homelessness, sheltered homelessness, and the severity of psychological symptoms predicted non-violent and violent crime among 207 mentally ill participants who were homeless at baseline. Participants were interviewed at 9 time points over 4 years. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was used to examine whether changes in homelessness status and symptom severity predicted changes in criminal activity over time. Results indicated that homelessness both on the streets and in shelters and psychological symptom severity predicted increases in non-violent crime. Sh…

Life-sentenced juveniles: Public perceptions of risk and need for incarceration.

Pursuant to recent United States Supreme Court decisions in Miller v. Alabama (2012) and Montgomery v. Louisiana (2016), individuals convicted of crimes committed when they were younger than 18 and for which they received mandatory life sentences are entitled to new sentencing hearings. This study examined public perceptions of such individuals (life-sentenced juveniles, or LSJs). Study participants were 663 adults (52.3% male) ages 22-71 years (M = 36.00, SD = 11.46) recruited using Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Each participant received one of a possible four vignettes about a man who was …

The relationship between victim impact statements and judicial decision making: An archival analysis of sentencing outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Victim impact statements (VISs) are testimonies that convey the emotional, physical, and financial harm that victims have suffered as the result of a crime. Although VISs are often presented to the court at sentencing, it is unclear whether they impact judicial decisions regarding sentencing. HYPOTHESES: We did not have any formal a priori hypothesis but instead examined five research questions. The first two explored whether the relationship between the victim and the offender, as well as the type of crime, was associated with differences in the likelihood of VIS submission. The f…

Mental health service user experiences of targeted violence and hostility and help-seeking in the UK: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this research scoping review was to assemble an evidence base for the UK on mental health service user experiences and perspectives on mental health-related targeted violence and hostility ('disability hate crime'). It also aims to address some of the gaps in the knowledge on risk management, help-seeking and prevention from the perspectives of those who experienced targeted violence and hostility because of their mental health problems or psychiatric status. METHODS: Seven key mental health and social care bibliographic databases were searched for relevant UK research …

The Familial Co-Aggregation of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Criminal Convictions: A Register-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The association between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and criminality is well established, but little is known about the familial liability of ADHD and crime across different types of relatives, from twins to cousins. In this study, we aimed to clarify the association between ADHD and crime by examining their co-aggregation both in the general population and across a range of familial relationships in a nationwide population-based sample, including separate analyses for men and women. METHODS: We analyzed data from 1,507,211 individuals born in Sweden between 198…
