Establishing Brazilian Age Norms and Cross-Cultural Differences in Infant Motor Development Using the Test of Infant Motor Performance (TIMP).

AIMS: (1) to compare the motor development trajectories of infants from Brazil (BR) and the U.S.; (2) to propose normative cutoffs scores for BR infants and examine similarities and differences in motor performance relative to U.S. cutoff scores; (3) to investigate variations in TIMP motor performance among Brazilian infants according to medical risk. METHODS: A total of 724 BR infants from diverse geographic regions were assessed using the TIMP and classified into low-, moderate-, and high-risk groups on medical history. Bayesian linear regression and discriminative power analysis were condu

Transcultural validation in Soninke of a language assessment tool: The Avicenne ELAL©.

Children of migrants are often exposed to more than one language from an early age. The Avicenne ELAL© test has been created to better assess language skills, avoid misdiagnosing learning disabilities, and inform early interventions. Plurilingual children aged 3.5 to 6.5 take the test in their mother tongues, with an interpreter's assistance. The test comprises three scales: Comprehension, Expression, and Storytelling. The objectives of this study were to describe steps of the transcultural validation of the Avicenne ELAL© for the Soninke culture and language, both for children living in a mon

Differences in online gambling expenditure between players from Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Great Britain, US and Canada: A largescale online player tracking study.

The present study aimed to compare the expenditure of real-world online gamblers (N = 926,086) from six countries (Great Britain, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Canada [Ontario], and US) to identify potential impacts of specific regulatory aspects on the amount of money gambled by players. The dataset comprised 233,221 British players, 167,826 Dutch players, 89,456 German players, 55,229 Spanish players, 18,463 Canadian players, and 361,891 US players. Data were analyzed using the total amount of money bet, lost, and deposited. German players bet (median = €74) and lost (median = €15) the lowest

Association between social media use, physical activity level, and depression and anxiety among college students: a cross-cultural comparative study.

This article examined the interaction of social media use and physical activity with mental health outcomes in a cultural and regional perspective among university students in China. Among 1,500 students from ten universities across different regions of China, stratified random sampling was used to complete the validated measures of social media use, physical activity, depression, anxiety, sleep quality, and cultural values. Significantly positive associations were revealed between the use of social media and both depressive symptoms, r = .28, p ≤ .001, and anxiety, r = .31, p ≤ .001. In femal

Perceived coworkers' work addiction: Scale development and associations with one's own workaholism, job stress, and job satisfaction in 85 cultures.

BACKGROUND: While the empirical data on the role of environmental factors in work addiction (WA) is steadily growing, little is known about the extent to which the workaholic environment contributes to the increased risk of WA and what are the relative contributions of direct supervisor's and colleagues' WA to one's own workaholism. METHODS: The Perceived Coworkers' Work Addiction Scale (PCWAS) assessing perceived direct supervisor's and colleagues' WA, defined as an addictive disorder, was administered alongside measures of WA, job stress, and job satisfaction in a total sample of 33,222 emp

German Non-Stuttering Primary School Children's Knowledge and Attitudes Towards Stuttering: International Comparison and Influencing Factors.

BACKGROUND: Stuttering, as a visible and audible deviation from the norm, often provokes negative reactions and leads to social stigmatisation. Studies have shown that there is a negative stuttering stereotype, the origins of which can be traced back to early life. As environmental reactions have a significant impact on the success of therapeutic interventions, understanding public knowledge and attitudes towards stuttering is essential to mitigate these prejudices at an early stage. AIMS: The present study collects the first specific data on the knowledge of German non-stuttering primary sch

Validation and Adaptation of the Arabic Version of the Skarzynski Tinnitus Scale.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to translate the Skarzynski Tinnitus Scale (STS) into Arabic, conduct a cross-cultural adaptation, and validate its psychometric properties. METHODS: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the STS were carried out in five main steps. A total of 152 participants were divided into two groups: 79 (52%) cases complaining of tinnitus and 73 (48%) in the control group without tinnitus. RESULTS: The scale required no substantial modifications during the translation process. Internal consistency was measured by Cronbach α for each of the three subscales and t

Cross cultural adaptation and validation of the Hindi version of foot function index.

BACKGROUND: The Foot Function Index (FFI) is a reliable and widely used standardized questionnaire that measures the impact of foot pathology on function. With 571 million Hindi-speaking people living globally and an increasing incidence of foot-related pathologies, it is imperative to cross-culturally translate and adapt a Hindi version of the FFI (FFI-Hi). We aimed to translate, cross-cultural adapt, and psychometrically test the FFI-Hi for use in Hindi-speaking individuals with foot conditions. METHODS: The translation of FFI-Hi was performed according to guidelines given by MAPI Research

Self-harm behaviors and their intentions: a cross-cultural analysis.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm behaviors (performed with either lethal and non-lethal intentions) are common, especially among individuals suffering from mood disorders, and the reasons individuals self-harm vary both by person and by the type of behavior. Understanding these variations may help clinicians determine levels of risk more accurately. AIMS: To understand whether culture and gender are associated with the likelihood of engaging in specific self-harm behaviors and whether the intention (lethal, ambivalent, non-lethal) of these behaviors vary with culture and gender. METHODS: 2826 individua

Birth cohort increases in psychopathology among young Americans, 1938-2007: A cross-temporal meta-analysis of the MMPI.

Two cross-temporal meta-analyses find large generational increases in psychopathology among American college students (N=63,706) between 1938 and 2007 on the MMPI and MMPI-2 and high school students (N=13,870) between 1951 and 2002 on the MMPI-A. The current generation of young people scores about a standard deviation higher (average d=1.05) on the clinical scales, including Pd (Psychopathic Deviation), Pa (Paranoia), Ma (Hypomania), and D (Depression). Five times as many now score above common cutoffs for psychopathology, including up to 40% on Ma. The birth cohort effects are still large and
