High-resolution solid-state (13)C NMR spectra are presented for samples of alpha-elastin prepared from the aorta of normal and copper-deficient pigs. Chemical shifts of the various peaks indicate that both the normal and undercross-linked peptides have similar overall structures. Neuron-specific enolase and phosphoglycerate mutase with specific activities of 106 and 215 U/mg, respectively, have been purified from human brain. Hydrophobic chromatography for enolase and blue Sepharose affinity chromatography for phosphoglycerate mutase were used as the last steps of purification. A heterobifunctional complex with fully preserved enolase and phosphoglycerate mutase activities was synthesized with the use of a bifunctional reagent, N-succinimidyl 3-(2-pyridyldithio)propionate. Autoantibodies to the conjugate will be used for identifying the bienzymatic complex in vivo.

Research on red cell substitutes requires the availability of oxygen-carrying fluids for physiologic experiments. This article describes the procedure for in-house production of such a fluid. PURPOSE: to compare five-year outcomes of two complete intracorneal implants (MyoRing versus annular-shaped intracorneal implant [AICI]) combined with accelerated corneal cross-linking (A-CXL) in progressive KCN.
METHODS: In this historical cohort study, preoperative and postoperative visual, refractive, tomographic, biomechanical, and aberrometric parameters of 27 eyes of 27 patients who underwent implantation of two complete rings (13 AICI and 14 MyoRing) combined with A-CXL were recorded.
