Curriculum Integration of an Interactive Blood Pressure Measurement Module to Improve Healthcare Students' Knowledge, Confidence, and Skills.

Hypertension (HTN) is a global risk factor for death and a major contributor to cardiovascular disease. Accurate blood pressure measurement (BPM) is essential for accurate diagnosis and management, yet many healthcare providers and trainees lack adequate BPM knowledge and technique due to non-standardized education and limited reinforcement. This study evaluated the impact of a structured BPM training program integrated into the curricula of two health professional training programs. Participants completed the American Medical Association's BP Measurement Essentials: Student Edition e-learning

The Almost-Cancer Curriculum: Teaching General Practice/Family Medicine Trainees to Manage Risk-Bearing Findings Before Diagnosis.

Cancer education traditionally focuses on prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and palliative care. However, primary care trainees frequently encounter patients with premalignant, indeterminate or risk-bearing findings that require surveillance despite the absence of cancer. These "almost-cancer" encounters demand skills in risk communication, uncertainty management and continuity of care. This article proposes an Almost-Cancer Curriculum for general practice and family medicine trainees, centred on avoiding binary reassurance, developing risk grammar, clarifying surveilla…

Teaching authentic peer review using preprints: a modular curriculum that can be embedded into existing science courses.

The peer-reviewed literature is the foundation of science and science education. Peer-reviewed journal articles are often assigned as readings or used as references in undergraduate science courses. However, students cannot participate in journal peer review and are rarely taught how to write peer review reports, an authentic form of scientific communication and an important part of the job of a scientist. As such, authentic peer review represents part of STEM's hidden curriculum. Here, we present a modular, project-based curriculum on how to peer review a manuscript and write a balanced peer …

Point-of-Care Ultrasound Curriculum for Internal Medicine Residents During the COVID-19 Era: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: The use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) by internal medicine physicians and residents is increasing. We present the results of a pilot study to implement a POCUS curriculum that was interrupted by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic at an internal medicine residency program at a community hospital. The purpose of this study is to inquire about the attitude and interest of our medical residents in POCUS. Additionally, we also plan to examine whether a curriculum that lacks some practical aspects due to COVID-19 restrictions can still improve the residents' confide…

Impact of Students' Scheduling Choice on Clerkship Examination Score Performance in a Time-Varying Competency-Based Curriculum.

PURPOSE: Standardized end-of-clerkship examinations typically occur on the last day of the clerkship. However, recent trends toward time-varying competency-based medical education have offered students more test scheduling flexibility, creating an opportunity to study the impact of student-selected examination timing. METHOD: Starting with the graduating class of 2018, students took the required standardized end-of-core clerkship examinations at any available time they chose during their clinical years. Before this change, these examinations were administered to all students on the last day o

A Sleep Medicine Curriculum for Pulmonary and Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship Programs: A Multisociety Expert Panel Report.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary medicine specialists find themselves responsible for the diagnosis and management of patients with sleep disorders. Despite the increasing prevalence of many of these conditions, many sleep medicine fellowship training slots go unfilled, leading to a growing gap between the volume of patients seeking care for sleep abnormalities and the number of physicians formally trained to manage them. To address this need, we convened a multisociety panel to develop a list of curricular recommendations related to sleep medicine for pulmonary fellowship training programs. METHODS: Su
