Carvacrol (CA) was firstly made into physically stable nanoemulsions using an innovative spontaneous emulsification method with carvacrol itself as oil phase without introducing other carrier oils. Self-crosslinking carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) microgels via intermolecular hydrogen bonds were then fabricated using a simple solvent exchange method with ethanol as poor solvent. The CMC microgels obtained were rapidly deposited on the surface of tin foil using an electrospray technique to produce the CMC films. The stability of the films in water was further intensified by using Ca2+ as cross-lin

A new Ru(II) half-sandwich complex, 1, containing an η6-p-cymene ligand and (E)-1-(pyren-1-ylmethylidene)hydrazine, was synthesized in good yield and characterized by FTIR, NMR, elemental analysis, and density functional theory calculations. The close agreement between experimental and theoretical FTIR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR data confirmed the proposed structure, while geometry optimization revealed the expected pseudo-octahedral piano-stool arrangement around the Ru(II) center. QTAIM analysis indicated that the metal-ligand interactions, particularly Ru-N and Ru-arene bonds, possess partial cov

Foodborne pathogenic biofilms pose significant challenges to food safety due to their enhanced resistance to conventional antimicrobial agents. In this study, we evaluated the synergistic antibiofilm activity of oregano essential oil (OEO) from Lippia graveolens and the lytic bacteriophage phiLLS against six foodborne bacteria. GC-MS analysis achieved a 100% identification ratio, revealing that OEO was mainly composed of carvacrol (58.9%), p-cymene (28.6%), γ-terpinene (2.9%), and caryophyllene (2.6%). The MIC and MBC of OEO were 1 and 2 mg/mL, respectively, for all strains except E. coli BALL

In traditional Chinese medicine, frankincense is widely recognized for its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory capacities and has been conventionally applied to manage multiple chronic inflammatory skin disorders. Nevertheless, its therapeutic potency and molecular mechanisms against atopic dermatitis (AD) remain poorly clarified. This study aimed to explore the protective efficacy of frankincense oil extract (FOE) and its active constituents in AD mouse models, thereby clarifying underlying regulatory mechanisms. Two classic AD models induced by 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) and carvacro

Carvacrol is a phenolic monoterpene present in the essential oil of the family Lamiaceae, as in the genera Origanum and Thymus. We previously reported that carvacrol is effective as an analgesic compound in various nociceptive models, probably by inhibition of peripheral mediators that could be related with its strong antioxidant effect observed in vitro. In this study, the anti-hypernociceptive activity of carvacrol was tested in mice through models of mechanical hypernociception induced by carrageenan, and the involvement of important mediators of its signaling cascade, as tumor necrosis fac

Phage endolysins are murein hydrolases that break the bacterial cell wall to provoke lysis and release of phage progeny. Recently, these enzymes have also been recognized as powerful and specific antibacterial agents when added exogenously. In the pneumococcal system, most cell wall associated murein hydrolases reported so far depend on choline for activity, and Cpl-7 lysozyme constitutes a remarkable exception. Here, we report the improvement of the killing activity of the Cpl-7 endolysin by inversion of the sign of the charge of the cell wall-binding module (from -14.93 to +3.0 at neutral pH

AIMS: Transient receptor potential (TRP) vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) and melastatin-8 (TRPM8) channels play a role in transmitting sensory information in primary-afferent neurons. TRPV1 agonists at high concentrations inhibit action potential conduction in the neurons and thus have a local anesthetic effect. The purpose of the present study was to know whether TRPM8 agonist menthol at high concentrations has a similar action and if so whether there is a structure-activity relationship among menthol-related chemicals.
MAIN METHODS: Compound action potentials (CAPs) were recorded from the frog sciatic
