A Rare Cause of Urinary Incontinence in a Child: A Case of Tarlov Cyst and a Review of Literature.

Tarlov cysts are formed by ectasia of the perineural spaces around the spinal nerve roots in or distal to the dorsal root ganglion. The cerebrospinal fluid constitutes the cerebrospinal fluid content. Pathogenesis and clinical findings remain unclear. The majority of the defects are asymptomatic. However, in the case of nerve root or spinal cord compression, symptoms such as low back pain, radiculopathy, and bowel and bladder dysfunction occur. Tarlov cyst is rare, and there is limited data on its clinical findings and incidence. This study presents a 10-year-old child patient with urinary inc

Giant Gartner duct cyst and elevated CA-125.

BACKGROUND: Gartner duct cysts represent vestigial remnants of the caudal end of the mesonephric (Wolffian) ducts. They are often associated with ureteral and renal abnormalities. In most cases they are solitary, less than 2 cm in diameter. Giant Gartner duct cysts are extremely rare. CASE: We present a girl with a giant Gartner duct cyst, without notable associated abnormalities or pathology, successfully treated by surgical excision. Preoperative aspiration revealed elevated level of CA-125 in the cyst fluid, with normal serum level of the same marker. CONCLUSION: Analyzing the aspirated f…

Identification of a forskolin-like molecule in human renal cysts.

Renal cyst enlargement is increased by adenosine cAMP, which is produced within mural epithelial cells. In a search for modulators of cAMP synthesis cyst fluids from 18 patients with autosomal dominant or recessive polycystic kidney disease (PKD) were analyzed, and in 15 of them, a stable lipophilic molecule that increased cAMP levels, stimulated transepithelial chloride and fluid secretion, and promoted the proliferation of human cyst epithelial cells was characterized. With the use of HPLC-mass spectrometry, a bioactive lipid with the same mass spectral fingerprint, the same chromatographic …

CA9 as a molecular marker for differential diagnosis of cystic renal tumors.

OBJECTIVE: CA9 is proven to be a powerful marker for clear cell renal cell carcinoma. The studies on CA9 have been limited to solid renal cell carcinomas (RCC). We have conducted a study of CA9 expression in renal cystic tumors. The purpose of the present study was to extend the utility of CA9 for cystic renal tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Immunohistochemistry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were used to detect CA9 expression in cystic renal tumors. Forty-three cystic renal tumors (22 benign and 21 malignant) were included for the immunohistochemical staining. Thirty-six patien

The popliteal cyst.

A popliteal cyst, originally called Baker's cyst, is a synovial fluid-filled mass located in the popliteal fossa. The most common synovial popliteal cyst is considered to be a distension of the bursa located beneath the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle. Usually, in an adult patient, an underlying intra-articular disorder is present. In children, the cyst can be isolated and the knee joint normal. The anatomy, etiopathogenesis, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, imaging and treatment modalities of the popliteal cyst are presented. The authors try to answer some questions deal

Surgical strategy for intracranial endodermal cyst--case report.

Two cases of endodermal cyst of the posterior fossa are reported. A 12-year-old girl presented with severe headache and vomiting caused by increased intracranial pressure. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed a cystic mass occupying the ambient and quadrigeminal cisterns. A 65-year-old woman presented with dizziness, and MR imaging revealed a cystic mass in the posterior fossa. The two patients underwent surgery for decompression and resection of the cyst. Surgical specimens of the cyst walls consisted of a single layer of ciliated columnar epithelium. The diagnoses w

Interleukin-1alpha-dependent regulation of matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9) secretion and activation in the epithelial cells of odontogenic jaw cysts.

Interleukin-1alpha (IL-1alpha) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) are thought to be involved in odontogenic cyst expansion. In this study, we investigated the effects of IL-1alpha on the secretion and activation of MMP-9 in odontogenic jaw cysts. An active form of MMP-9 was present in odontogenic keratocyst (6 of 8 cases) fluids more frequently than dentigerous cyst (3 of 10 cases) and radicular cyst (3 of 10 cases) fluids, although proMMP-9 was present in all cyst fluids. Odontogenic keratocyst fragments in explant culture secreted a larger amount of IL-1alpha than dentigerous cyst and ra…

Febrile convulsions in an adult as presenting symptom of intracranial dermoid cyst: a case report.

A 32-year-old man had generalized tonic-clonic epileptic seizures associated with episodes of recurrent high fever for 6 years. Repeated physical examinations including neurological status, EEG and nuclear brain scan were negative. Brain CT showed a non-homogeneous parasellar cyst of low density and fat-fluid levels in the lateral ventricles. The diagnosis of intracranial dermoid cyst was confirmed at surgery and histopathologically. Recurrent febrile convulsions and chemical meningitis may be the only clinical manifestations of ruptured dermoid cyst. The CT features of intracranial dermoid cy

Orbital blood cyst.

A blood cyst of the orbit is an unusual cause of proptosis and most likely arises in a pre-existing haemangioma. If the cyst occurs at the apex of the orbit the blood should be aspirated. This is followed by excision of the cyst wall, the dissection being done with the aid of an operating microscope. If there is evidence of intracranial connection of the blood cyst, namely, splayed superior orbital fissure or cerebrospinal fluid leak, then the patient should be treated with an antibiotic to prevent intracranial infection.

Unilateral facial paresis secondary to a suspected brainstem arachnoid cyst in a Maltese dog.

An 8-year-old, intact female Maltese dog was presented with decreased tear production and unilateral loss of eye blinking. Neuro-ophthalmic examination and brain magnetic resonance imaging were performed to determine the origin of facial paresis. A cystic lesion in the left pontomedullary region which displayed equal intensity to cerebrospinal fluid was revealed. Hyposignality was noted on fluid attenuated inversion recovery sequences, and the lesion was suggestive of an arachnoid cyst. This report described unilateral facial nerve dysfunction that resulted from a suspected brainstem arachnoid

CT and MRI of pediatric skull lesions with fluid-fluid levels.

Fluid-fluid levels can occur whenever different fluid densities are contained within a cystic or compartmentalized lesion, usually related to the evolution of hematoma or necrosis. Review of the literature demonstrated that throughout the skeletal system, the most common etiology for fluid-fluid levels is aneurysmal bone cyst, but there are no dedicated studies of the pediatric calvaria, to our knowledge. In this report, we present clinicopathologic characteristics and CT and MR imaging of 11 patients with pediatric skull mass lesions demonstrating fluid-fluid levels. MR imaging demonstrated m

MR imaging of Baker cysts --prevalence and relation to internal derangements of the knee.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence of popliteal cysts in patients studied with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Cyst presence and volume will be related to other internal derangement of the knee. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred and eighty-two consecutive patients with a MR study of the knee were included. Images were obtained in the three spatial orthogonal planes and evaluated through consensus. Four categories were established for the Baker cyst and synovial fluid (absence, minimum, moderate and massive), and the presence of meniscal, cruciate ligaments and cartilage

Eyelid Eccrine Cyst: An Exceptional Lesion Among Dominant Apocrine Cysts.

A 71-year-old woman developed a small bluish lesion beneath the cilia of the left lower eyelid. Excision and microscopic examination disclosed a cyst with an intimately associated eccrine sweat gland. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that the cyst's epithelium was strongly CK5/6, CK14, CK7 weakly positive, and gross cystic disease fluid protein-15 and smooth muscle actin negative. This is the first immunohistochemically proven eccrine cyst of the eyelid skin. Apocrine cysts develop only at the eyelid margin where the glands of Moll are located. They immunostain positively for cytoplasmic gros

Cystic carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the lacrimal gland.

In a 48-year-old male patient, a well-circumscribed, round tumor in the lacrimal fossa was detected by CT. During total excision of the tumor, a wall of the tumor ruptured, resulting in leakage of the fluid contents. The wall of the tumor formed a cyst that contained residual yellowish fluid. Histologically, the cyst wall included an adenocarcinomatous component and a focus of pleomorphic adenoma. The tumor was diagnosed as a carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the lacrimal gland. The carcinoma cells showed positive immunoreactivity for androgen receptor and BRST-2, indicating that the tumor w

Classification of human breast cysts according to electrolyte and androgen conjugate composition.

One hundred human breast cyst fluids have been analysed for sodium (Na+), potassium (K+) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA) sulphate. Concentrations varied greatly between individual cyst fluids, Na+ from 20 to 185 mmol/l, K+ from 5 to 160 mmol/l and DHA-sulphate from 1.5 to 87 mumol/l. Analysis of the inter-relationships between Na+, K+ and DHA sulphate revealed two major sub-populations of cyst fluids--one group in which Na+ levels were markedly in excess of K+ and DHA sulphate concentrations were low and the other in which K+ was the predominant cation and DHA sulphate concentrations were hig…

Abnormal purinergic signaling contributes to development of renal cysts in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

Polycystic kidney diseases (PKD) are a group of inherited nephropathies marked by the formation of fluid-filled cysts along the nephron, which cause renal failure. Bulk RNA sequencing of microdissected renal cysts from Pkd1RC/RC mice identifies 4,970 differentially expressed genes in comparison to intact collecting ducts. A poorly understood factor of cyst growth is the high ATP level in the cyst fluid, probably released by pannexin-1 hemichannels. Here, we evaluate a novel pannexin-1 inhibitor SIL14 as a potential therapeutic agent for cyst reduction and investigate proteins involved in cysto…
