"Old and new" frontiers in embryo viability assessment: current practices and introduction of emerging approaches.

Reliable assessment of embryo viability remains a critical yet challenging component of assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Traditional methods, including morphological grading and preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A), are either subjective, invasive, or resource intensive. Consequently, non-invasive approaches, including analysis of spent culture medium (SCM) and digital image-based analytical methods, emerged as promising alternatives to support clinical decision-making, though their reliability varies. SCM analyses can detect embryonic DNA and metabolites, but their

Robotic-assisted right upper lobectomy with systemic pulmonary vein anomaly: a case report.

BACKGROUND: While the role of low-dose computed tomography (CT) in lung cancer screening is established, its limitations in detailing pulmonary vascular variations are less emphasized. Three-dimensional reconstruction technology allows surgeons to reconstruct a patient's bronchial and pulmonary vascular structures using CT scan results. However, low-dose CT may not provide the same level of clarity as enhanced CT in displaying pulmonary vascular details. This limitation can be unfavorable for preoperative detection of potential pulmonary vascular variations, especially in cases involving plann

Noninvasive imaging evaluation of peritoneal recurrence and chemotherapy benefit in gastric cancer after gastrectomy: a multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal recurrence (PR) is the predominant pattern of relapse after curative-intent surgery in gastric cancer (GC) and indicates a dismal prognosis. Accurate prediction of PR is crucial for patient management and treatment. The authors aimed to develop a noninvasive imaging biomarker from computed tomography (CT) for PR evaluation, and investigate its associations with prognosis and chemotherapy benefit. METHODS: In this multicenter study including five independent cohorts of 2005 GC patients, the authors extracted 584 quantitative features from the intratumoral and peritumoral

Tibial diaphyseal malunion: A problem-oriented approach to assessment and correction.

Tibial shaft fractures are the most common long bone injuries, and malunion remains a significant complication despite advances in fixation. Tibial diaphyseal malunion is typically multiplanar, involving coronal, sagittal, rotational, and translational deformities with limb shortening, leading to altered biomechanics, abnormal joint loading, and potential degenerative changes. Biomechanical studies suggest that coronal deformity exceeding 5°, rotational deformity ≥10° and shortening ≥10 mm also increase the risk of joint degeneration, although long-term clinical correlations remain variable. A

RAMAS-Net: a module-optimized convolutional network model for aortic valve stenosis recognition in echocardiography.

INTRODUCTION: Aortic stenosis (AS) is a valvular heart disease that obstructs normal blood flow from the left ventricle to the aorta due to pathological changes in the valve, leading to impaired cardiac function. Echocardiography is a key diagnostic tool for AS; however, its accuracy is influenced by inter-observer variability, operator experience, and image quality, which can result in misdiagnosis. Therefore, alternative methods are needed to assist healthcare professionals in achieving more accurate diagnoses. METHODS: We proposed a deep learning model, RSMAS-Net, for the automated identif

Deep learning for precise diagnosis and subtype triage of drug-resistant tuberculosis on chest computed tomography.

Deep learning, transforming input data into target prediction through intricate network structures, has inspired novel exploration in automated diagnosis based on medical images. The distinct morphological characteristics of chest abnormalities between drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) and drug-sensitive tuberculosis (DS-TB) on chest computed tomography (CT) are of potential value in differential diagnosis, which is challenging in the clinic. Hence, based on 1176 chest CT volumes from the equal number of patients with tuberculosis (TB), we presented a Deep learning-based system for TB drug r

Women's anxieties caused by false positives in mammography screening: a contingent valuation survey.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer screening with mammography has been shown to be effective for preventing breast cancer death. However, mammography screening can be harmful to women. One of the major problems is anxiety from a false positive result. Previous studies do not consider intangible benefits related to anxiety or peace of mind in mammography screening. In order to quantify anxiety, we employed the contingent valuation method (CVM) to measure the general public's willingness to pay (WTP) for mammography screening. METHODS: About 397 women aged 50-59 participated in the computer-assisted que

Temporal profile of fronto-striatal-limbic activity during implicit decisions in drug dependence.

BACKGROUND: Substance dependence is associated with impaired decision-making and altered fronto-striatal-limbic activity. Both greater and lesser brain activity have been reported in drug users compared to controls during decision-making. Inconsistent results might be explained by group differences in the temporal profile of the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) response. While most previous studies model a canonical hemodynamic response, a finite impulse response (FIR) model measures fMRI signal at discrete time points without assuming a temporal profile. We compared brain activity

Adaptive control deficits in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): the role of error processing.

Cognitive performance of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by large moment-to-moment fluctuations in cognitive control reflected by a highly inconsistent and inaccurate response style. It has been suggested that abnormal error processing underlies this failure to implement adequate control. We investigated the error-related negativity (ERN), a negative deflection in the event-related potential (ERP) time-locked to erroneous responses in 16 rigorously screened ADHD boys aged 8-12 years and 16 age-matched normal control boys during a modified Eriksen
