Structure and function in the ruminant synepitheliochorial placenta: central role of the trophoblast binucleate cell in deer.

The ruminant placenta has a very uniform gross structure based on localised areas of fetomaternal membrane apposition and proliferation to f … uch SP may be transient or persist throughout pregnancy depending on the species. The wide range of deer species examined confirms the uniformity of the BNC hormone production, migration, and fusion pattern described for other ruminants. BNC migration produces predominantly transient TNC, but there are areas of SP largely restricted to the apex of the …

A quantitative backscattered electron imaging study of hypomineralization and hypoplasia in fluorosed dental enamel of deer.

Mineral content and distribution of fluorosed and unfluorosed (control) dental enamel of roe deer and red deer cheek teeth were analyzed using digital backscattered electron (BSE) imaging of PMMA-embedded specimens. Compared to the controls, the fluorosed enamel exhibited various aberrations resulting from a fluoride-induced disturbance of the processes involved in enamel formation. Thus, the presence of surface hypoplasias and an enhancement of the incremental pattern in the fluorosed enamel are evidence of a fluoride impact on the secretory ameloblasts, whereas a (subsurface) hypomineralizat…

Enteral and parenteral phases of Trichinella nativa and Trichinella pseudospiralis in the deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus.

Trichinella nativa and Trichinella pseudospiralis infections in a wild rodent host, the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), were characterized. Forty-six percent of 400 inoculated T. nativa were recovered on day 4 postinoculation (PI); 77% and 23% were found in the small and large intestines, respectively. Thirty-one percent of the worms recovered on day 4 remained in the large intestine beyond day 20 PI. Worms were embedded in the mucosa of the small intestine, cecum, and colon. Females recovered from the small and large intestines had statistically indistinguishable in vitro larval releases…

Prevalence of the Lyme disease spirochete in populations of white-tailed deer and white-footed mice.

The prevalence of the Ixodes dammini spirochete (IDS) in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) was studied on the eastern end of Long Island, New York. Both species commonly occur in a variety of habitats, are preferred hosts of Ixodes dammini, and can harbor the spirochetes in the blood. Each animal was examined for spirochetemia, tick infestation, and IDS infection rates in the ticks that were removed from it. The results obtained suggest that in winter deer can be infected by questing adult I. dammini. Adult ticks apparently are infected thro…

[The nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses of the red deer (Cervus elaphus)--anatomical corrosion studies].

By means of thirty skulls of dominating female animals the formation and topography of the Cavum nasi and its Sinus paranasales of the red-deer are described. The main results are on the one hand the total absence of a Sinus frontalis and a Sinus sphenoidalis and on the other hand the characteristic formation of the Sinus ethmoidales. Amongst critical discussion with the available literature concerning the pneumatisation of skulls of red-deer a comparison with the well-known findings about the Cavum nasi and its Sinus paranasalis at the sheep, goat, roe-deer and cattle is following.

Evolution and plasticity of the control of breathing in high-altitude natives: Insights from deer mice.

Breathing and the hypoxic ventilatory response are vital determinants of gas exchange and metabolism in hypoxia. High-altitude natives are valuable models for elucidating how plasticity and evolutionary adaptation can shape the control of breathing in chronic hypoxia. Here, we review studies on this issue in deer mice, a species found from sea level to over 4300 m elevation. Distinct populations from high and low altitudes have been bred in captivity and compared in common conditions of normoxia or hypoxia. Low-altitude populations exhibit ventilatory acclimatization to hypoxia (VAH), in which…

Gastrointestinal and respiratory helminths of free-ranging red deer at the wildlife-livestock interface in Türkiye.

The interaction between wild and domestic ruminants plays a pivotal role in the epidemiology of helminth infections and the potential spread of anthelmintic resistance. However, data on the helminth fauna of free-ranging red deer (Cervus elaphus) in Türkiye remain limited. This study investigated the occurrence of gastrointestinal and respiratory helminths in a free-ranging red deer population in Ankara. Faecal samples (n = 53) were examined using flotation, sedimentation, and Baermann–Wetzel techniques. Helminths were detected in 32% of samples, revealing a community dominated by generalist p…

Theileria cervi-associated morbidity and mortality in a cohort of captive mule deer following relocation.

Theileria spp. are tick-transmitted apicomplexan parasites that infect a variety of mammalian species. Although several species of Theileria infect ungulates of North America, from a historical perspective, reports of clinical disease are relatively sporadic. Herein we report an outbreak of theileriosis in captive deer following transport from Illinois to Iowa, USA. Although the facility housed both whitetail and mule deer, only mule deer were affected clinically by lethargy, anorexia, and anemia. Post-mortem examination revealed pleural effusion, mucous membrane pallor, and splenomegaly. Micr…

Analysis of the Primary Pathogenic Bacteria in Abscess Disease of Musk Deer Using Metagenomic Approaches.

Abscesses are among the diseases affecting the survival of captive musk deer and are difficult to identify in their early stages. In this study, metagenomic sequencing, 16S rRNA sequencing, and paraffin sectioning were used to analyze the microbiota in the abscess musk deer pus group (AMP), abscess musk deer oral group (AMO), and healthy musk deer oral group (HMO) to compare the differences in microbiota in musk deer. By detecting differences in the oral microbiota through throat swabs, we aimed to monitor the early onset of abscess disease to facilitate timely intervention and treatment. The …

The virome investigation of the globally endangered Eld's deer (Rucervus eldii) on Hainan Island, China.

Eld's deer (Rucervus eldii) is a rare and globally endangered tropical Southeast Asian deer species. There is no research on pathogens in Eld's deer in Hainan, China. This study aimed to understand the virus diversity and novel viruses in Eld's deer, and provided important epidemiological baseline information for conservation of this endangered species. 33 nasal swabs, 33 anal swabs, and 9 wound (bitten by ticks) swabs were collected from 33 wild Eld's deer in a nature reserve in Hainan, which constituted into 5 pools. Based on next-generation sequencing (NGS) and macrogenomic analysis, there …

Dissecting the Effects of Cephenemyia stimulator on the Olfactory Turbinates and Nasopharynx of Roe Deers (Capreolus capreolus).

Nasopharyngeal myiasis in European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) is a pathological condition caused by the larval stages of Cephenemyia stimulator, a fly from the Oestridae family. These larvae reside in the host's upper respiratory tract for months, inducing significant tissue damage and clinical symptoms. The lifecycle of Cephenemyia stimulator is complex, involving three larval stages before maturation into adult flies, with each stage contributing to the progressive pathology observed in the host. Despite their prevalence, the histopathological effects of these larvae in the nasal and nas…

Identification of a new Sarcocystis sp. in marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus) from wetlands of Argentina.

The marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus) is the largest South American native deer species and is listed as "Vulnerable" by IUCN due to the population reduction. As part of a conservation and disease surveillance program, muscle samples from 14 marsh deer found dead in 2016 and 2017 in northeast Argentina were obtained at necropsy. Samples from each animal were processed as pooled muscles (heart, diaphragm, tongue and hindlimb) by homogenization and direct microscopical observation to detect intracellular Sarcocystis spp. cysts. Sarcocysts were observed in six samples, and several cysts recover…

The red brocket deer (Mazama americana) as a new intermediate host of Taenia omissa (Taeniidae).

A total of 13 metacestodes were collected from the lung and parietal pleura from a red brocket deer (Mazama americana) from the Peruvian Amazon. All metacestodes were identified as cysticerci of Taenia omissa by morphological and molecular analyzes. Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 sequences from the new isolate T. omissa had more than 96.8% identity with other Peruvian isolates of the species previously sequenced. Lower similarities (93.8-95.8%) were verified between Peruvian and Canadian isolates. This finding adds a new intermediate host for T. omissa and also expands its geographical distrib…

Antioxidative Potential of Red Deer Embryos Depends on Reproductive Stage of Hind as A Oocyte Donor.

The aim was to compare the blastocyst stages of red deer embryos in respect of in vitro fertilization (IVF) efficiency, morphology, apoptotic and proliferative abilities, and antioxidative potential according to the reproductive status of hinds. We used three experimental groups, including the ovaries collected post mortem on the 4th and 13th days of the estrous cycle and during pregnancy (n = 18). After oocyte maturation, frozen-thawed epididymal semen was used for IVF. Blastocyst quality, apoptotic potential by determining the mRNA expression of BAX, BCL-2, OCT4, SOX2, and placenta-specific …

Relationship between the excretion of eggs of parasitic helminths in roe deer and local livestock density.

Because of their continuing expansion, wildlife ruminant species that prosper in rural landscapes may be increasingly affected by and/or contribute to the circulation of certain generalist pathogens also infecting domestic ruminants, when they share common spaces or resources. In this study, we aimed to test the hypothesis that parasitism with gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) of wild roe deer inhabiting different rural landscapes is correlated with livestock density. We used faecal egg counts of GINs and spatial data of 74 GPS-collared roe deer, inhabiting various landscapes from closed fores…

Disseminated Mycobacterium kansasii infection in a white-tailed deer and implications for public and livestock health.

We document a case of Mycobacterium kansasii, a rare, zoonotic bacterium, in a white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus) in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Grossly, the deer had fibrinous pleuropneumonia with yellow, mineralized nodules scattered throughout the lungs and extending to the pleura. The kidneys were enlarged and had numerous pale foci in the cortex. Microscopically, the pulmonary architecture was replaced by variably sized, multifocal-to-coalescing granulomas with peripheral histiocytes and fewer multinucleate giant cells, and necrotic centers with mineralization and hem…
