Eruption cysts in the neonate.

Disturbances of the dental development may result in anomalies, which may be apparent as soon as the child is born. Eruption cysts are rarely observed in neonates considering that at this stage of the child's life teeth eruption is uncommon. Thus, the aim of this report is to describe a case of eruption cysts in a neonate. A male neonate was brought to the emergency service with the chief complaint of an elevated area on the anterior region of the inferior alveolar ridge. The lesion was clinically characterized as a compressive and floating swelling. Through a radiographic exam two mandibular

Inflammatory Paradental Cyst in the Mandibular Region: A Report of Two Cases.

A distinctive form of paradental cyst can occur on the buccal and apical aspects of erupted mandibular molars. This cyst has peculiar clinical and radiographic features, although the microscopic findings are the same as those of odontogenic inflammatory cysts. Diagnostic and therapeutic problems can occur when this lesion is misinterpreted as a radicular cyst. The purpose of this paper is to present two additional cases of a paradental cyst in the buccal and mesial aspects of a mandibular first molar involving the apical area. The difficulty of diagnosis, treatment, and controversies regarding

Surgical approach of ectopic maxillary third molar avulsion: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Ectopic maxillary third molars (EMTM) are extracted mainly by the Caldwell-Luc technique but also by nasal endoscopy. There is currently no consensus on the treatment of this eruption and its management is heterogeneous and multidisciplinary. Two literature searches were performed with no time restrictions via Pubmed. In the first, we used the keywords "ectopic AND third molar" and in the second the keywords "dentigerous cyst AND ectopic third molar". For both articles, epidemiological, symptomatic, radiological and surgical data were recorded. Overall, 33 eligible articles were identified inv…

Calcifying odontogenic cyst: Report of an uncommon entity with a brief literature review.

The aim of this clinical report is to document a rare and unusual case of calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) in the maxillary anterior region … elling. The clinical and radiographic findings were suggestive of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor and dentigerous cyst. The decision to enucleate the lesion was considered, and histopathological features were compatible with the diagnosis of COC. Re-ossification with no recurrence was noticed after a 1-year follow-up. COC is an unusual developmental odontogenic cyst …

What is Currently Known about Odontogenic Keratocysts?

PURPOSE: To present updated information on odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) classification, etiology, genetic and molecular alterations, epidemi … lusion criteria. The literature search aimed to find articles that would show the frequency of OKC, dentigerous cyst, radicular cyst, and other cysts. RESULTS: OKC presents local aggression and high recurrence; therefore, a better understanding of its clinical characteristics and the genetic and molecular factors involved in this peculiar and controversial lesion …

Role of matrix metalloproteinases and their tissue inhibitors in the pathological mechanisms underlying maxillofacial cystic lesions.

Cystic lesions are considered to be one of the most common pathologies of the maxillofacial region, and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) may represent potential etiological factors. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the role of MMP-2 and MMP-9, and their endogenous tissue inhibitors, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 and TIMP-2, respectively, in the pathogenesis of maxillofacial cystic lesions. A total of 25 patients diagnosed with radicular cysts (RCs; n=20), dentigerous cysts (n=3) and retention cysts (RtCs; n=7) were enrolled in the present study. Gelatin zymography…

Expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen in ameloblastomas and odontogenic cysts.

The identification of the proliferative activity in tumours may be useful to predict the biological behaviour of different lesions. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) has been used for the evaluation of the proliferative ability of many lesions. In this study 22 ameloblastomas (4 follicular, 5 plexiform, 4 acanthomatous, 5 unicystic, 4 recurrent), 12 odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), 8 dentigerous cysts (DC), and 12 radicular cysts (RC) were analysed. PCNA+ cells were present in all cyst types but the OKC contained the highest number of PCNA+ cells. In OKC the location of PCNA+ cells was m…

Basal Cell Nevus Syndrome with Unusual Associated Findings: A Case Report with 17 Years of Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS), also known as Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GGS), is an inherited autosomal dominant disor … 27-year-old woman who presented with multiple maxillary and mandibular OKCs, as well as mandibular dentigerous cysts, all detected by X-ray. The medical records of the patient reported other findings such as falx cerebri calcification, osteolysis in femoral bones, and focal bone alteration suggestive of simple bone cysts. Based on the presented manifestations, it …

Analysis of the PTCH1 signaling pathway in ovarian dermoids.

Dermoids belong to the group of developmental cysts and arise from germ cells. Studies on these tumors may therefore increase our understand … of microsatellite markers in close vicinity to the PTCH1 locus in both odontogenic keratocysts and dentigerous cysts as well as in ovarian dermoid cysts (ODC). In this study, we closely examined the status of the PTCH1 gene in ODCs. Although about 25% of cysts demonstrated LOH at the PTCH1 locus, no nonsense or missense mutations in the coding region of PTCH1 wer …

Molariform mesiodens in primary dentition: a case report.

A supernumerary tooth is a developmental anomaly and it has been argued to arise from multiple aetiologies. Mesiodens is a midline supernumerary tooth which is commonly seen in the maxillary arch, and incidence of molariform mesiodens in the maxillary midline is rare in permanent dentition and extremely uncommon in primary dentition. A midline supernumerary tooth in the primary dentition can cause an ectopic or a delayed eruption of permanent central incisors, which will further alter occlusion and may compromise aesthetics and formation of dentigerous cysts. This paper reports a rare case whi…

Primary cilia and hypoxia-associated signaling in developmental odontogenic cysts in relation to autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease - A novel insight.

Developmental cysts are pathological epithelial-lined cavities arising in various organs as a result of systemic or hereditary diseases. Molecular mechanisms involved in the formation of developmental odontogenic cysts (OCs) are not fully understood yet; the cystogenesis of renal cysts originating from the autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) has been, however, explored in much greater detail. This narrative review aimed i) to summarize molecular and cellular processes involved in the formation and growth of developmental OCs, especially dentigerous cysts (DCs) and odontogenic …

Intranasal endoscopic prelacrimal recess approach to maxillary sinus.

BACKGROUND: The inferior turbinate (IT) and nasolacrimal duct (NLD) are often sacrificed while managing the diffuse lesion of maxillary sinus (MS). We report a new approach to MS without ablation of NLD and IT. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 19 hospitalized patients (aged from 42 to 68 years) who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery between 2003 and 2008. Twelve patients had inverted papilloma (IP), two had nasal polyps, two had Kubo's postoperative cyst of MS, one had recurrent bone cyst of maxilla, one had dentigerous cyst and one had bleeding of internal maxillary artery secondar…
