Proflavine allergy is uncommon, occurring in approximately 6% of patients attending contact dermatitis clinics. Proflavine wool is used by many surgeons in the UK as a dressing that can be moulded to conform to the contours of a corrected prominent ear. It may have bacteriostatic properties. We present a case where contact dermatitis in response to proflavine developed after pinnaplasty. This caused diagnostic confusion, a lengthened hospital stay and an unsightly hypertrophic scar.

In three patients, two women aged 37 and 20 years and a man aged 46 years, a blistering skin condition was observed. Histopathological examination of the skin lesions revealed a blister level just beneath the stratum granulosum, which is proof of a friction blister. The patients were suffering from bullous dermatitis artefacta or bullous pathomimia. This is a psychiatric disorder characterised by rubbing skin blisters but denying self-infliction. We describe a child with an unusual presentation of perianal streptococcal dermatitis which included fever, acral scarletiniform desquamation, and extension of erythema to involve the genitalia and proximal thighs, as well as the commonly seen well-defined erythema of the perianal area. We suggest that isolated group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GAS) in our patient produced a pyrogenic exotoxin similar to that which appears in scarlet fever.

A literature review is presented of allergic contact dermatitis from eyeglasses. Causes are grouped into metals, plastics, plasticizers, solvents, UV stabilizers, antioxidants, dyes, and waxes. Plasticizers and UV stabilizers are currently the most common allergens.

Shiitake (Lentinus edodes) is a mushroom which is eaten in Chinese and Japanese meals and is nowadays the second most commonly produced edible mushroom in the world. Shiitake dermatitis was first described by Nakamura in 1977. This disease presents with very characteristic skin manifestations. From April 1974 to April 1991, I have observed 51 patients with shiitake dermatitis. The following description reviews the clinical manifestations, laboratory investigations and sources of shiitake dermatitis.

52 (5.4%) of 1063 eczema patients showed a positive reaction to chlorhexidine gluconate 1% aq. and/or 1% pet. on patch testing. At retesting, 21/29 (72%) were still positive and the results of use-test, anamnesis and supplementary testing indicated allergic sensitization in about 50% of these patients. Patients with leg eczema/leg ulcer seem to be particularly at risk.
