Altered capillary response to tape stripping in psoriasis and some other dermatoses: the petechial threshold test.

66 psoriatics, 34 normal adults, 10 normal juveniles, and smaller groups of patients afflicted either with seborrheic dermatitis-rosacea or atopic dermatitis were examined for the threshold of capillary petechia formation on clinically normal forearm skin in response to repeated tape stripping. A definitely lowered petechial threshold was found in psoriatics (mean of 9 vs. 19 tape strips) and also in persons with the seborrheic-rosacea complex. Normal juveniles and patients with atopic dermatitis had an increased threshold. The possible relation of these data are pointed out to recent findings

[Skin changes in HIV infections].

The spectrum of dermatologic findings related to human immunodeficiency virus includes a variety of cutaneous and mucocutaneous disorders. The most frequent diagnoses are oral candidiasis, seborrheic dermatitis, pyodermas and Kaposi's sarcoma. Distinctive skin lesions occur at various stages of HIV infection. Especially herpes zoster, seborrheic dermatitis and oral candidiasis may act as indicators, and their recognition is of particular importance for the early diagnosis of HIV infection and for the prevention of further opportunistic infections. In addition, some dermatologic findings as mol

An investigator-blind, randomized, 4-week, parallel-group, multicenter pilot study to compare the safety and efficacy of a nonsteroidal cream (Promiseb Topical Cream) and desonide cream 0.05% in the twice-daily treatment of mild to moderate seborrheic dermatitis of the face.

The treatment of seborrheic dermatitis includes topical antifungal agents to eradicate Malassezia spp, corticosteroids, which treat the inflammatory component of the disease and keratolytics which remove scale and crust. This study compared the efficacy of a nonsteroidal topical cream and a low-potency topical corticosteroid for the treatment of mild to moderate seborrheic dermatitis of the face in 77 volunteers randomized to twice-daily treatment with nonsteroidal cream or corticosteroid cream for up to 28 days. If the individual was rated clear by day 14, the study drug was collected and the

Malassezia species may play potential roles in the pathogenesis of meibomian gland dysfunction.

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is the most common cause of dry eye disease (DED). Although many factors, such as aging, androgen deficiency, bacterial colonization and drug toxicity have been demonstrated to be associated with MGD, its pathogenesis is not well understood and definite therapies are lacking. Meibomian gland is the largest lipid-secreting gland of human and is the counterpart of sebaceous gland in the eyelid. The lipophilic yeast Malassezia species (spp) habitats in sebaceous gland and is generally considered to play pathogenic roles in seborrheic dermatitis. Several mechanism

Ketoconazole: a review of a workhorse antifungal molecule with a focus on new foam and gel formulations.

Topical ketoconazole, an imidazole, has been a mainstay of treatment for fungal infections and seborrheic dermatitis. Ketoconazole interferes with the fungal synthesis of ergosterol, a constituent of cell membranes, and has other antifungal effects. Shampoo, cream and oral formulations of ketoconazole have been available for many years. Recently, new foam and gel formulations of ketoconazole have been brought to market for the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis, which are effective against superficial fungal and yeast infections. The foam and gel formulations are likely to lead to a renascence

Pityriasis amiantacea: a study of seven cases.

Pityriasis amiantacea was first described in 1832. The disease may be secondary to any skin condition that primarily affects the scalp, including seborrheic dermatitis. Its pathogenesis remains uncertain. We aim to analyze the epidemiological and clinical profiles of patients with pityriasis amiantacea to better understand treatment responses. We identified seven cases of pityriasis amiantacea and a female predominance in a sample of 63 pediatric patients with seborrheic dermatitis followed for an average of 20.4 months. We reported a mean age of 5.9 years. Five patients were female, with a me

Tinea incognito.

Tinea incognito was first described 50 years ago. It is a dermatophytic infection with a clinical presentation modified by previous treatment with topical or systemic corticosteroids, as well as by the topical application of immunomodulators such as pimecrolimus and tacrolimus. Tinea incognito usually resembles neurodermatitis, atopic dermatitis, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, lupus erythematosus, or contact dermatitis, and the diagnosis is frequently missed or delayed.

Cutaneous manifestations of familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy.

Familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy is an autosomal dominant amyloidosis, characterized by the systemic deposition of amyloid with a particular involvement of the peripheral nerves. The disease generally manifests as a severe sensory, motor and autonomic neuropathy. Cardiomyopathy, nephropathy, vitreous opacities and carpal tunnel syndrome may occur in a variable association with the neuropathy. Trophic dermatological lesions are frequent in the more advanced stages of the disease. We examined the skin of 142 patients. The cutaneous manifestations more frequently observed were: xerosis (81.6%)
