Psychosocial factors discriminate multidimensional clinical groups of chronic low back pain patients.

Previous studies have empirically defined clinical subgroups of chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients, based on differing patterns of pain, disability and emotional distress. Because these identified groups generally are comparable in terms of physical and demographic variables, variation in functional status cannot be adequately explained by medical or social factors. In the present study we evaluated whether other psychosocial factors (stress, coping attempts, and satisfaction with social supports) might differentiate the observed groups. A discriminate function analysis indicated that ratin

An Application of Syndemic Theory to Identify Drivers of the Syphilis Epidemic Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men.

BACKGROUND: We applied syndemic theory to explore the degree to which syndemic conditions explain the syphilis epidemic affecting Canadian gay and bisexual men who have sex with men (GBMSM). METHODS: Data from a national survey comprising 7872 GBMSM were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression to measure associations between recent syphilis diagnosis (RSD; in previous 12 months) and the following variables: (1) sociodemographic information (sexuality, HIV status, age, income, ethnicity, relationship status), (2) antigay stigma (bullying, physical violence, sexual violence, career dis

Characteristics associated with activity restriction induced by fear of falling in community-dwelling elderly.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the social-demographic, clinical, functional and psychological factors associated to activity restriction due to fear of falling in community-dwelling elderly and identify which variables best discriminate groups of elderly with different levels of activity restriction and fear of falling. METHODS: One hundred and thirteen community-dwelling elderly (74.5±7 years old) participated in the study. Activity restriction induced by fear of falling, previous falls, fall related self-efficacy, frailty phenotype, functional capacity, depressive sympto

"An environment of fear no matter where I go": A mixed-methods examination of transgender and gender diverse experiences while facing antitransgender legislation.

Even under the best of circumstances, transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals face well-documented social and health disparities. In recent years, more than 2,000 legislative and policy-based initiatives have aimed to limit the rights of TGD individuals in accessing gender-affirming health care, sports, and public facilities. These legislative efforts represent a structural stressor that compounds the interpersonal stressors that TGD individuals already face, potentially leading to elevated psychological distress. However, TGD individuals exist within a constellation of experiences th

Patients seeking occupational health advice before and after COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic led to an increased prevalence of psychological disorder in population-based studies, but the effect on the ability to work has been less well studied, except in health workers. AIMS: This study aimed to assess whether there has been an increase in the number of people seeking assistance for psychological problems from the Sheffield Occupational Health Advisory service in the UK since the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The study used routinely collected data at Sheffield Occupational Health Advisory Service (SOHAS) to compare the proportion of all new referrals

Associations of cardiovascular health assessed by life's crucial 9 with incident cardiovascular disease and dementia: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The associations of the renewed cardiovascular health (CVH) assessed by Life's Crucial 9 (LC9), which consisted of Life's Essential 8 (LE8) and psychological health, with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) and dementia remained unexplored. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the associations and determine whether LC9 has a higher discrimination ability than LE8 in predicting incident CVD and dementia. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This study was a prospective population-based cohort study using data from the UK Biobank. MEASUREMENTS: LC9 was assessed as American H

Factorial Model of Obese Adolescents: The Role of Body Image Concerns and Selective Depersonalization-A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship binding body weight to psychological well-being is unclear. The present study aims at identifying the contribution, and specificity, of some dimensions (i.e., eating-related symptoms, body image disorders, eating habits, personality traits, and emotional difficulties) characterizing the psychological profile of obese adolescents (749 participants, 325 females; 58.3% normal-weight, 29.9% overweight, and 11.7% obese; mean age = 16.05, SD = 0.82). METHODS: By introducing the scores obtained by standardized self-report tools into a generalized linear model, a factoria

Transgender Identity and Social Acceptance: Psychosocial Insights from a Phenomenological Study.

Transgender individuals experience complex emotional, social, and psychological challenges shaped by systemic discrimination, social exclusion, and varying degrees of familial acceptance in Türkiye. Despite growing global research, studies addressing these lived experiences within Türkiye's sociocultural context remain limited. This study explored how transgender individuals navigate family relationships, social environments, and available support systems, as well as how they construct resilience and imagine possibilities for social change. Using a descriptive phenomenological approach, semi-s

Discriminative-stimulus effects of triazolam and midazolam in rhesus monkeys.

The present study characterized the discriminative-stimulus effects of triazolam and midazolam in rhesus monkeys. Six monkeys discriminated 0.1 mg/kg of triazolam from vehicle under a fixed-ratio 5 (FR 5) schedule of stimulus-shock termination (SST). Four monkeys subsequently discriminated 0.56 mg/kg of midazolam from vehicle under the same schedule of reinforcement. Benzodiazepine (BDZ) agonists midazolam and diazepam, and the barbiturate pentobarbital, substituted for triazolam, and the non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist ketamine did not. Triazolam, diazepam, lorazepam, f

D-amphetamine-like stimulus properties are produced by morphine injections into the ventral tegmental area but not into the nucleus accumbens.

We investigated whether injections of morphine into the ventral tegmental area (VTA) or the nucleus accumbens (NAS) could produce amphetamine-like stimulus properties and locomotor stimulant effects. Rats were trained to discriminate 1.0 mg/kg D-amphetamine from saline using both VI-30 and FR-16 reinforcement schedules and they were then tested following bilateral injections of morphine sulfate (2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 micrograms/side) either into the VTA or the NAS. Intra-VTA injections of morphine produced significant increases in amphetamine-lever responding that were comparable to increases obse

Inclusive Care for Birthing Transgender Men: A Review of the Literature.

We conducted a review of literature to examine the experiences of transgender men (transmen) seeking pregnancy care. Our review revealed that transmen and cisgender persons desire pregnancy at similar rates; however, transmen experience discrimination from health care systems and providers. Additionally, pregnant transmen may experience unique psychological needs and require support for postpartum contraception and lactation. Based on a synthesis of the available literature, we offer strategies for providing inclusive care for birthing transmen and resources for further professional developmen

Rejecting conspiracies doesn't necessarily mean that you're smart: The relationship between conspiracy discrimination and reasoning ability.

Research examining the psychological predictors of conspiracy belief has overwhelmingly examined conspiracies that are unverified and/or implausible. Doing so potentially conflates 'rational' thinking with the tendency to heuristically reject conspiracist explanations. In three studies, we take a different approach, examining the predictors of the accuracy with which people can discriminate between unverified conspiracy theories and verified conspiracies (i.e. conspiracies that form part of the official record). The ability to discriminate between unverified and verified conspiracies was consi

Psychometric testing of the Chinese version of Workplace Age Discrimination Scale and its short-form among Taiwanese teachers.

Workplace age discrimination is a widespread issue that particularly affects older adults. The present study aimed to examine age discrimination within the educational context by validating the Chinese version of the Workplace Age Discrimination Scale (WADS) among Taiwanese teachers. A total of 671 teachers (mean age = 41.0 years; 74% female) completed an online survey. Both full-form (26-item) and short-form (9-item) versions of the WADS were translated using a forward-backward method. All participants were required to complete the Chinese version of WADS and the following external measures:

Brain Morphometry and Cognitive Features in the Prediction of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Background/Objectives: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gut-brain disorder characterized by abdominal pain, altered bowel habits, and psychological distress. While brain-gut interactions are recognized in IBS pathophysiology, the relationship between brain morphometry, cognitive function, and clinical features remains poorly understood. The study aims to conduct the following: (i) to replicate previous univariate morphometric findings in IBS patients and conduct software comparisons; (ii) to investigate whether multivariate analysis of brain morphometric measures and cognitive performance c

Examining the effectiveness of positive reappraisal in the context of discrimination.

Positive reappraisal has been shown to be a generally effective emotion regulation strategy associated with multiple indices of greater psychological functioning. There are, however, some emotion-eliciting events, such as discrimination, that may not lend themselves to favorable alternative interpretations or which have relatively fewer affordances. In such instances, a reappraisal strategy could lose its effectiveness. We conducted an experimental test of this hypothesized ineffectiveness of positive reappraisal within a discriminatory context. Participants were 404 Black and Latine college s

Functional antagonism of the caffeine-discriminative stimulus by triazolam in humans.

Six healthy male volunteers (aged 21-31 yr) were trained to discriminate between the methylxanthine caffeine (320 mg/70 kg, p.o.; e.g. drug A) and placebo (drug B). Then dose-effect curves were determined for triazolam (0.1-0.56 mg/70 kg), alone and in combination with the caffeine training dose (n = 6), buspirone (1.0-32.0 mg/70 kg), alone and in combination with the caffeine training dose (n = 4), and caffeine (56-560 mg/70 kg), alone and in combination with a selected dose of triazolam (n = 5). Triazolam blocked the discriminative effects of the caffeine training dose in a dose-related mann

Fibromyalgia Subgroups Identified Using Model-Based Clustering: Results from UK Biobank.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a heterogeneous chronic condition with wide variability in symptom burden, psychosocial distress, and functional impact. This study aimed to identify latent FM subgroups reflecting multidimensional patient profiles using comprehensive biopsychosocial variables and model-based clustering methods within UK Biobank. Individuals meeting the 2016 American College of Rheumatology FM criteria (n = 4,172) were analysed using Gaussian mixture clustering. Twenty-eight variables across sociodemographic, clinical symptoms, and psychological/behavioural domains were included. Cluster s

Anatomy of Antisemitism in Health Professions Education and Practice: A Narrative Review.

There has been an international resurgence in antisemitism in healthcare education and practice since October 7, 2023, prominently affecting the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), Canada, and Australia. In the US, federal investigations by the US Department of Justice and the Congressional Subcommittee on Education and the Workforce were initiated into antisemitic harassment and hostile learning environments in medical schools. Healthcare organizations in the UK also came under investigation, and the US Congress opened an investigation into alleged antisemitism within a national psycholo

Like a Punch in the Gut: A Novel Perspective On Annual Recurrences of Ulcerative Colitis.

BACKGROUND: Ulcerative colitis (UC), a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, causes stomach pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. The exact cause is unknown, but it is thought to involve genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Some people experience annual flare-ups without obvious reason. This article adopts a theory-driven approach to consider how and why past traumatic events may contribute to annual flare-ups. METHODS: We applied learning theory, which explains the development of re-experiencing phenomena in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), to better understand the occurrenc
