Disseminated intravascular coagulation in a dog naturally infected by Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi from Rio de Janeiro - Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is an acquired disorder characterized by the activation of intravascular coagulation and excessive fibrin formation. It always occurs in association with other clinical conditions, including parasitic diseases. DIC has been described as a unusual complication in human and canine visceral leishmaniasis. CASE PRESENTATION: DIC was found in a seven-year-old male mongrel dog naturally infected by Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi. Haemostasis parameters demonstrated changes in primary and secondary haemostasis and fibrinolysis. CONCLUSION: D…

Disseminated intravascular coagulation in a novel porcine model of severe Staphylococcus aureus sepsis fulfills human clinical criteria.

Sepsis is a common and often fatal complication in human patients in intensive care units. Relevant and well characterized animal models of sepsis may provide valuable information on pathophysiological mechanisms and be a mean of testing new therapeutic strategies. Large animal models of Staphylococcus aureus sepsis are rare, even though S. aureus increasingly affects human patients. Sepsis changes the haemostatic balance and leads to endothelial cell (EC) activation, coagulopathy and, in severe cases, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). The aim of this study was to characterize the …

Pacemaker lead thrombosis and disseminated intravascular coagulation following warfarin therapy: case report and review of the literature.

A 54-year-old male with a permanent pacemaker was admitted to the intensive care unit due to a stroke. This occurred six days following the initiation of warfarin therapy for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The patient presented with profuse bleeding through the sites of venipuncture and laboratory evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation. Echocardiography revealed multiple thrombi adjacent to the pacemaker leads. Underlying thrombophilia and/or any other systemic disorders were excluded. Thereafter, he exhibited multiple organ failure and despite all therapeutic efforts he expired. …

Plasmodium falciparum cerebral malaria complicated by disseminated intravascular coagulation and symmetrical peripheral gangrene: case report and review.

The case of a 56-year-old female tourist who survived cerebral Plasmodium falciparum malaria with disseminated intravascular coagulation and symmetrical peripheral gangrene, ultimately requiring amputation of her left-sided fingertips and toes, is reported. While symmetrical peripheral gangrene has been described rarely in Asian, African, and American patients with Plasmodium falciparum malaria and disseminated intravascular coagulation, no such case has been reported in travelers returning from endemic areas.

[Anaphylactoid reactions to contrast media which occurred during cholecystectomy and subsequent disseminated intravascular coagulation--a case report].

A 67-year-old woman without any history of allergic episode developed severe hypotension (40 mmHg) without skin rash one minute after the ad … ogical complement system. After the recovery from the anaphylactoid reaction, the patient developed disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and severe bleeding around the wound for which reoperation was needed. It is necessary to consider some prophylactic treatments against DIC when severe anaphylactoid reaction occurred.

Coagulation activation is associated with genomic-instability-related features in TP53-mutated AML and MDS: routine laboratory patterns beyond classical disseminated intravascular coagulation.

BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a serious complication of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) associated with poor prognosis. In TP53-mutated AML and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), however, the classical ISTH criteria rarely identify overt DIC, although bleeding and thrombotic complications are well documented in acute leukaemia. We hypothesized that these patients exhibit a lower-grade, subclinical coagulation activation that is associated with the underlying genomic-instability-related features of TP53-mutant disease. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 107 consecutiv…

[A case of disseminated bone marrow carcinosis with disseminated intravascular coagulation successfully controlled with S-1 after total gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer].

Bone marrow carcinosis due to gastric cancer with disseminated intravascular coagulation(DIC)occurs suddenly, progresses rapidly, and has a very poor prognosis. In addition, physical status tends to be bad at the time of the episode, and palliative care is generally selected as the treatment method. The case was a 70-year-old woman who underwent total gastrectomy for scirrhous stomach cancer five years previously. She recently noticed gingival hemorrhage, and was referred to our hospital by a nearby doctor. As a result of her examination, she was diagnosed with disseminated bone marrow carcino…

Development and Validation of A Lasso-Logistic Regression Model for Predicting Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation in Pediatric Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) patients who develop disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) experience rapid disease progression and substantially elevated mortality. Currently, no validated early identification strategies exist for this life-threatening complication. We aimed to develop a prediction model for early DIC detection in pediatric HLH patients. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients from the Hunan Children's Hospital HLH database (January 2018-August 2024). Data imbalance was addressed through combined oversampling and under…

Disseminated intravascular coagulation as a prognostic factor in heatstroke: a retrospective cohort study based on Japanese insurance claims.

PURPOSE: Heatstroke is an emerging global health concern, particularly among the elderly. Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) complicates about 20% of these cases and contributes to poor outcomes. The JAAM-2 DIC score, which excludes SIRS, has been validated in sepsis. However, its utility in heatstroke, a condition sharing pathophysiological features with sepsis, remains unexamined. To evaluate the association between heatstroke-associated DIC, defined by JAAM-2 criteria, and clinical outcomes, using a nationwide Japanese database of medical claims. METHODS: We conducted a retrospec…

Severe Japanese Spotted Fever With Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation and a Fatal Outcome: A Case Series of Five Patients.

Japanese spotted fever (JSF), caused by Rickettsia japonica, is an endemic tick-borne disease in Japan that usually responds well to tetracycline therapy. However, delayed diagnosis and treatment can result in serious complications such as disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and death. To identify early markers of severe disease, a case series of five JSF patients (one male patient, four female patients; aged 61-78) treated between 2019 and 2024 was analyzed. All patients presented with fever and erythema; two exhibited eschar. Although empirical tetracycline therapy was administered …

An Uncommon Case of Plasmodium vivax Malaria with Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation: Rare Case Report with Review of Literature.

Malaria is a severe health issue in India despite government efforts. Malaria has many complications, some of which can be life-threatening. Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a prominent malaria complication, besides renal failure, cerebral malaria, pulmonary edema, and anemia. We report a young man with Plasmodium vivax malaria who developed septic shock due to DIC. A 25-year-old male had a fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, and nausea for 5 days. On clinical examination, the patient was in distress and had a fever of 102.6°F with a blood pressure of 86/46 mmHg. A complete blood c…
