Ship noise causes tagged harbour porpoises to change direction or dive deeper.

Shipping is the most pervasive source of marine noise pollution globally, yet its impact on sensitive fauna remains unclear. We tracked 10 harbour porpoises for 5-10 days to determine exposure and behavioural reactions to modelled broadband noise (10 Hz-20 kHz, VHF-weighted) from individual ships monitored by AIS. Porpoises spent a third of their time experiencing ship noise above ambient, to which they regularly reacted by moving away during daytime and diving deeper during night. However, even ships >2 km away (noise levels of 93 ± 14 dB re 1 μPa2) caused animals to react 5-9 % of the time (…

Individual variability in diving behavior of the Black-vented Shearwater in an ever-changing habitat.

Oceanic mesoscale systems are characterized by inherent variability. Climatic change adds entropy to this system, making it a highly variable environment in which marine species live. Being at the higher levels of the food chain, predators maximize their performance through plastic foraging strategies. Individual variability within a population and the possible repeatability across time and space may provide stability in a population facing environmental changes. Therefore, variability and repeatability of behaviors, particularly diving behavior, could play an important role in understanding t…

Dive into machine learning algorithms for influenza virus host prediction with hemagglutinin sequences.

Influenza viruses mutate rapidly and can pose a threat to public health, especially to those in vulnerable groups. Throughout history, influenza A viruses have caused pandemics between different species. It is important to identify the origin of a virus in order to prevent the spread of an outbreak. Recently, there has been increasing interest in using machine learning algorithms to provide fast and accurate predictions for viral sequences. In this study, real testing data sets and a variety of evaluation metrics were used to evaluate machine learning algorithms at different taxonomic levels.

Ictal Mammalian Dive Response: A Likely Cause of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy.

Even though sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) takes the lives of thousands of otherwise healthy epilepsy patients every year, the physiopathology associated with this condition remains unexplained. This article explores important parallels, which exist between the clinical observations and pathological responses associated with SUDEP, and the pathological responses that can develop when a set of autonomic reflexes known as the mammalian dive response (MDR) is deployed. Mostly unknown to physicians, this evolutionarily conserved physiological response to prolonged apnea economizes oxy

Innervation of the Nose and Nasal Region of the Rat: Implications for Initiating the Mammalian Diving Response.

Most terrestrial animals demonstrate an autonomic reflex that facilitates survival during prolonged submersion under water. This diving response is characterized by bradycardia, apnea and selective increases in peripheral vascular resistance. Stimulation of the nose and nasal passages is thought to be primarily responsible for providing the sensory afferent signals initiating this protective reflex. Consequently, the primary objective of this research was to determine the central terminal projections of nerves innervating the external nose, nasal vestibule and nasal passages of rats. We inject…

[Diving Accidents in Lakes - a Retrospective Study of a Level-1 Emergency Centre in Switzerland].

Diving Accidents in Lakes - a Retrospective Study of a Level-1 Emergency Centre in Switzerland Abstract. Switzerland is a country in the middle of Europe without access to an open sea. Here one does not assume a noteworthy number of diving accidents. However, this study shows a large number and attempts to explore the main risks of diving accidents. The data from 2001 to 2016 of patients had been collected und retrospectively evaluated using the electronic database of the emergency center of the university hospital in Bern, Switzerland. Barotrauma of the ear (69.0 %), decompression accidents (…

In-air hearing of a diving duck: A comparison of psychoacoustic and auditory brainstem response thresholds.

Auditory sensitivity was measured in a species of diving duck that is not often kept in captivity, the lesser scaup. Behavioral (psychoacoustics) and electrophysiological [the auditory brainstem response (ABR)] methods were used to measure in-air auditory sensitivity, and the resulting audiograms were compared. Both approaches yielded audiograms with similar U-shapes and regions of greatest sensitivity (2000-3000 Hz). However, ABR thresholds were higher than psychoacoustic thresholds at all frequencies. This difference was least at the highest frequency tested using both methods (5700 Hz) and …

The extracranial venous system in the heads of beaked whales, with implications on diving physiology and pathogenesis.

Beaked whales are a poorly known but diverse group of whales that have received considerable attention due to strandings that have been temp … gas and may, therefore, form anatomic regions that may be important in physiological management of diving gases. These structures may also be vulnerable to pathologic introduction of emboli into the vascular system. Expansive, thin-walled venous lakes are found within the pterygoid region, which suggest the potential for nitrogen exchange as well as for …

Case report: clearance to dive for a naval candidate with family history of malignant hyperthermia.

INTRODUCTION: A 20-year-old male military recruit who presented for a screening physical for U.S.Naval Diving Duty was found to have family history significant for malignant hyperthermia. He had never been exposed to anesthesia, a trigger for the condition, and had not undergone testing. Medical history was otherwise unremarkable, and the patient was cleared for diving. METHODS: Literature search was conducted using PubMed/Medline. Keywords included malignant hyperthermia, exertional heat illness, exertional rhabdomyolysis, diving, special operations, military. Results that included cases of …

Sponge divers of the Aegean and medical consequences of risky compressed-air dive profiles.

Historically, Turkey once had a substantial number of professional sponge divers, a population known for a relatively high incidence of diving-related conditions such as decompression sickness (DCS) and dysbaric osteonecrosis (DON). Sponge diving ended in the mid-1980s when nearly all of the sponges in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas contracted a bacterial disease and the occupation became unprofitable. We reviewed the records of Turkish sponge divers for information on their level of knowledge, diving equipment, dive profiles, and occupational health problems. Information was collected by: …

Transient global amnesia after breathing hyperoxic mixtures in otherwise regular dives.

The diagnosis of decompression sickness may be difficult, particularly when patients present with atypical clinical manifestations after dives going on uneventfully and with full adherence to safety parameters. The case reports involve two divers who presented with transient global amnesia (TGA) immediately after surfacing from otherwise regular dives during which they had been breathing hyperoxic mixtures (Nitrox). A wide spectrum of symptoms of neural dysfunction following hyperoxic mixtures have been reported, including cases of memory impairment related to previous generalized convulsions.

The influence of oxygen and carbon dioxide on diving behaviour of tufted ducks, Aythya fuligula.

While optimal diving models focus on the diver's oxygen (O(2)) stores as the predominant factor influencing diving behaviour, many vertebrate species surface from a dive before these stores are exhausted and may commence another dive well after their O(2) stores have been resaturated. This study investigates the influence of hypoxia and also hypercapnia on the dive cycle of tufted ducks, Aythya fuligula, in terms of surface duration and dive duration. The birds were trained to surface into a respirometer box after each dive to a feeding tray so that rates of O(2) uptake (VO2) and carbon dioxid…

The influence of N2-O2 and He-O2 saturation diving on electroencephalogram of human bodies.

This paper reports the changes of the EEG of human bodies during saturation exposure at different depths to different mixed gases. The resul … hief factor of the EEG changes is due to the effect of nitrogen narcosis during the oxygen-nitrogen diving experiment. In addition, carbon dioxide retention under the high pressure is also a factor of the EEG changes, because repeated inhaling of CO2-dense mixtures could aggravate the EEG changes and the reduction of carbon dioxide in humans by hypervent …

The use of the diving reflex to terminate supraventricular tachycardia in a 2-week-old infant.

The use of the diving reflex to terminate a case of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PST) is described in a 2-week-old infant who presented in severe congestive heart failure with supraventricular tachycardia at a rate of 300. The infant's face was placed in a basin of ice water at 5 degrees C. for 5 seconds with manual occlusion of the infant's nostrils to prevent aspiration. The PST converted to a sinus rhythm of 120 within 3 seconds of facial immersion. The physiology of the diving reflex is reviewed and the uses and hazards of this reflex in terminating attacks of PST in infants is…

Genome assembly and annotation of a deep-diving pinniped, the northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris).

The northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) is the largest pinniped species in the northern hemisphere. The species is classified as being of least conservation concern by the IUCN-a triumph of conservation efforts despite hunting pressure that nearly led to its extinction more than a century ago. The historical range of the northern elephant seal extended from Baja California to Alaska, but overexploitation caused a severe demographic collapse and genetic bottleneck, with only an estimated 10 to 30 survivors left on Isla Guadalupe, Mexico. As part of the California Conservation Genom
