Rinderpest and peste des petits ruminants viruses exhibit neurovirulence in mice.

Members of the morbillivirus genus, canine distemper (CDV), phocine distemper virus (PDV), and the cetacean viruses of dolphins and porpoises exhibit high levels of CNS infection in their natural hosts. CNS complications are rare for measles virus (MV) and are not associated with rinderpest virus (RPV) and peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) infection. However, it is possible that all morbilliviruses infect the CNS but in some hosts are rapidly cleared by the immune response. In this study, we assessed whether RPV and PPRV have the potential to be neurovirulent. We describe the outcome of …

Mercury exposure of six Greenland societies from toothed whale harvest over three decades spanning 1993-2020.

In the present study, yearly hunting data for the period 1993-2020 is used to estimate subsistence annual harvest, consumed meat and subsequent methylmercury (MeHg) exposure of six selected Greenlandic municipalities. We compared the estimated yearly MeHg exposure for these municipalities with the calculated Provisional Tolerably Yearly Intake (PTYI) of MeHg based on the population numbers over the three decades. Three of six municipalities exceeded the PTYI. In Northwest Greenland (Qaanaaq), there was no temporal development exceeding the PTYI by 10.7-folds (range: 4.3-21.8). In East Greenlan

Survey of Brucella spp. and Leptospira spp. antibodies in cetaceans and manatees of the Amazon basin and Atlantic Ocean, Brazil.

Aquatic mammals can act as sentinels of emerging and resurging pathogens in the environment. Brucella spp. and Leptospira spp. are 2 zoonotic pathogens relevant to aquatic mammals, and their detection can be used to assess pathogen exposure. In this study, serum from 84 individuals-63 cetaceans (families Iniidae, n = 37; Delphinidae, n = 22; and Kogiidae, n = 4) and 21 West Indian manatees Trichechus manatus-was tested by the Rose Bengal Test (RBT) and a commercial competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (c-ELISA) for detecting Brucella spp. antibodies, and the microscopic agglutination

Effects of mandibular retropositioning, with or without maxillary advancement, on the oro-naso-pharyngeal airway and development of sleep-related breathing disorders.

PURPOSE: Literature suggests that patients without pre-existing sleep-related breathing disorders who undergo orthognathic surgery for treatment of facial asymmetry may experience changes in their oropharyngeal airway. Mandibular retropositioning can compromise the posterior airway space, alter the physiologic airflow through the upper airway, and predispose patients to development of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was a retrospective cohort analysis of 26 patients who underwent mandibular retropositioning with or without maxillary advancement within

Prey species of franciscana Pontoporia blainvillei as paratenic hosts of helminths.

The distribution of franciscana Pontoporia blainvillei Gervais & d'Orbigny, 1884, is restricted to the estuarine and coastal waters of the southwestern Atlantic. The diet of this dolphin is composed of fishes, squids, and shrimps, many of which harbor helminths that may infect franciscana. Larval forms of the trematode Synthesium pontoporiae and the acanthocephalan Bolbosoma turbinella have been recorded in franciscana; however, they have not yet been identified in any of the prey species of this cetacean. We evaluated 3 components of the diet of franciscana as possible transmission sources of

Cephalometric analysis of hard and soft tissues in a 12-year-old syndromic child: a case report and update on dentofacial features of Crouzon syndrome.

Crouzon syndrome or craniofacial dysostosis is a rare syndrome characterized by craniosynostosis, midfacial hypoplasia and exophthalmia. The abnormalities found in this syndrome change too much from case to case depending on the suture fusion order. We report a case of a 12 year old child and a mother showing variations in the dentofacial tissues clinically and radiographically. Subsequently, the application of digital software [Dolphin Imaging 11] enabled us to solve out the case as Crouzon syndrome by analyzing the skeletal and soft tissue alterations. An update of the effects of this syndro

Epigenetic orthodontics: facial and airway development.

It is the purpose of this article to introduce a functional orthopedic/orthodontic appliance, the Homeoblock (Figure 1), which, when worn at night (3 p.m. to 8 a.m.), alters oral function and produces a gene environmental interaction that results in an epigenetic response, namely, the expression of unexpressed genes in adult patients. The results of the case studies presented are evaluated using state-of-the-art, three-dimensional technologies: cone beam computerized tomography combined with Dolphin and Analyze 10.0 software (Mayo Clinic). The results, in so-called non-growing adult patients,

Re-Evaluation of the Cross-Reactions of the Antibody against the Causative Agent for Paracoccidioidomycosis Ceti; Paracoccidioides ceti and the Related Fungal Species.

Paracoccidioidomycosis ceti (PCM-C) is a chronic granulomatous keloidal dermatitis in cetaceans that has been reported worldwide and is caused by Paracoccidioides ceti. Serological cross-reactions among highly pathogenic fungal infections and related diseases have been reported. However, the true cross-reaction of antibodies against P. ceti has remained unknown due to the use of positive control sera from infected dolphins. This study aimed to re-evaluate antibodies from mechanically dislodged fungal cells in the infected tissue of a PCM-C case and demonstrate the actual cross-reaction. The re…

Nematodal otitis by Stenurus globicephalae in a melon-headed whale (Peponocephala electra) stranded in Northeastern Brazil: case report and literature update.

Cetaceans are highly adapted marine mammals whose survival depends on precise auditory and echolocation systems. Therefore, disease processes affecting these systems, including parasitic infections pose significant morbidity and may result in stranding and death. Here, we describe the pathologic and parasitological findings in an adult, male melon-headed whale (Peponocephala electra) stranded dead on the Brazilian coast. The main gross pathologic findings consisted of bilateral otitis media associated with numerous nematodes in the tympanic bullae that occluded the tympanic lumen and resulted

Optimizing target-to-total DNA ratio in eDNA studies: effects of sampling, preservation, and extraction methods on single-species detection.

There are many decisions to be made when sampling for environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis, whether using a targeted, single-species assay or community-based metabarcoding. Of the entire workflow from sampling water to bioinformatic analyses, the first steps in the process of collecting water, filtering it, and preserving the filter membranes represent major decision points upon which the success of downstream processes depend. Though many previous studies have compared water volume filtered, filter pore size, and preservation and extraction methods, the conclusions are often that they produce di

Mercury speciation and selenium dynamics across marine tetrapods: a cross-taxa assessment.

Mercury (Hg) is a globally distributed contaminant that bioaccumulates and biomagnifies in marine food webs, yet total mercury (THg) concentrations alone often provide limited insight into the toxicological significance of Hg exposure because toxicity depends strongly on Hg speciation. Here, we investigated hepatic concentrations of THg, methylmercury (MeHg), and selenium (Se) in five marine tetrapod species: the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), kelp gull (Larus dominicanus), Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus), franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei), and Guiana dolphin (Sotalia g

Camouflage Versus Orthognathic Surgery With 3D Digital Aligner Planning in Class III Malocclusion: A Retrospective Comparison of Aesthetic and Dentoskeletal Outcomes.

Class III skeletal malocclusion can be managed with surgical or nonsurgical orthodontic therapy. In selected cases, camouflage treatment may be planned after an accurate evaluation, also including Wits appraisal and Holdaway angle. Several studies have already analyzed the achieved outcomes between orthodontic camouflage and surgical therapy using multibracket appliances. However, recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) digital planning with clear aligners (CA) have opened new opportunities for managing Class III discrepancies. This research aims to evaluate, retrospectively, the dentoskelet
