One of the authors' young patients suffered near-drowning while being treated with a synthetic below-knee cast, and this intrigued them into examining the buoyancy of waterproof casts and their use in small children. Synthetic and fiberglass casts were fabricated and subjected to immersion testing using lead pellets. Fiberglass casts sank immediately, while synthetic casts stayed afloat. METHODS: Children (age one day-17 years) were included if admitted to the Erasmus MC Sophia Children's Hospital, after drowning with CA, between 2002 and 2019. BACKGROUND: Post-hypoxic myoclonus (PHM) is characterized by generalized myoclonus after hypoxic brain injury. Myoclonus is often functionally impairing and refractory to medical therapies. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been used to treat myoclonus-dystonia, but few cases of PHM have been described.
CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old woman developed severe, refractory generalized myoclonus after cardiopulmonary arrest from drowning. We performed MRI-guided asleep bilateral pallidal DBS placement, resulting in improvement in action myoclonus at one year.

Suicides in Geneva in those less than 25 years old, from 1993 to 2002, were reviewed. Scenes investigations, autopsy findings, toxicology results, and psychiatric history (when available) were examined. There were 65 cases. The average annual suicide rate was 11/100,000. Swimming pool suction injuries are rarely encountered in forensic medicine. Infants under 8 years of age are most frequently involved in such accidents with high risk of serious injuries and fatal consequences due to drowning. To reassess the immunohistochemical distribution of pulmonary surfactant apoprotein A (SP-A) in relation to the causes of death, 282 forensic autopsy cases were reviewed.
