Body piercing has become a fashionable trend in western culture. High ear piercing is common among the adolescent population and complications from this procedure although uncommon can be permanently disfiguring. We describe a case of perichondritis after high ear piercing in an adolescent male. A review of the history of body piercing, complications, risk factors, and treatment is presented.

Microtia is a spectrum of congenital deformities, which varies from barely discernable to anotia. Twinning is a well-known risk factor for congenital defects including external ear deformities. Monozygotic twins usually show identical appearances as well as congenital malformations. In special conditions as ear deformities, "mirror-image" may also occur. We report 2 cases of monozygotic twins with different ear deformities. The 8-year-old propositus with lobule type microtia and her identical female twin presented with facial symmetry. Patient A had sausage-type right microtia with absence of

Approximately 30% of newborns have some degree of congenital ear anomalies, the minority will resolve spontaneously. Deformations can be treated non-surgically, when diagnosed early, whereas malformations surgically only. The authors use the EarWell system proven to achieve excellent results in treating deformations. Although prematurity might raise the risk of ear-deformations compared to term infants, in our experience, there is a longer time frame until effective treatment is initiated due to the cartilage malleability.Treatment included splinting with retractors and taping or a custom-made

PURPOSE: Cartilage conduction hearing aids (CC-HAs) are novel hearing aids using the third hearing pathway of cartilage conduction. We assessed the efficacy of CC-HAs in adult hearing-loss patients who had various anatomical conditions of their ear canal(s) and determined who are good candidates for CC-HAs.
METHODS: Patients (n = 37) were categorised into three groups of participants based on ear canal anatomy: (1) canal stenosis; (2) abnormal canal; (3) normal canal. After a 1-month free trial of normal usage, CC-HA-aided and unaided hearing thresholds (43 fitted ears) were determined using

BACKGROUND: Because auricular reconstruction is a complex and relatively uncommon procedure, there are many patients that have had disappointing reconstructions. This study describes the authors' large experience with secondary procedures in patients with unsatisfactory or failed initial ear reconstruction.
METHODS: A prospectively maintained database of all consecutive patients who underwent secondary total ear reconstruction from March of 1991 to December of 2017 was reviewed. Demographic data and outcomes were assessed. Patients with acquired absence of the ear were not included.
RESULTS:

Recently, our research group has utilized serial histological sections to investigate the morphogenesis of the middle ear, which corresponds to the period of middle ear ossicle (MEO) cartilage formation. However, research regarding middle ear development during the post-embryonic period has been limited. In the present study, we investigated morphogenesis of the middle ear in human fetuses with a crown-rump length (CRL) between 37 and 197 mm using high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Our findings indicated that the morphology of the MEOs is similar during fetal development and adu

During the COVID-19 pandemic, wearing masks to prevent the spread of infection has been imperative. Though many wear N-95 masks with circumferential head straps, the use of surgical ear loop-style masks has increased. Dermatologic complications, such as contact dermatitis, psoriasis, and local irritation, have been described in several reports. One such complication has been pressure injury to the external ear, secondary to friction from the ear loops. While external ear pressure ulcers caused by mask-wearing have already been observed, injuries extensive enough to require surgical reconstruct

Traumatic ear amputation (TEA) is a complete avulsion of a part or of the total auricular tissue. TEA are rare (only 74 cases have been described in the literature) and their handling is complex. The surgeon's objective is to obtain the best cosmetic result without demolishing the auricular area in order to allow future ear reconstruction in case of replantation failure. Many techniques of ear replantation have been described in the literature during the last 30 years: microsurgical replantation, pocket techniques and reattachment techniques. Microsurgical replantation should be achieved every

An 18-month-old Belgian Warmblood mare was evaluated because it had injured the outer convex aspect of the left auricle. Second intention healing of the wound area caused tissue contracture, which resulted in the tip of the ear curling backward. By use of a technique involving undermining of the skin and a flap of granulation tissue on the medial aspect of the wound area and multiple incisions of the auricular cartilage, the curling was relieved and the ear regained a more normal shape. A skin graft was applied to cover the existing wound defect in an attempt to accelerate wound healing; therm

An external ear lesion designated as auricular chondropathy in aging Crl:CD rats was reported. One hundred eighty (180) of 4,876 rats (3.7%) had ear deformity. Grossly, the ears were thickened, nodular, or disfigured. Both ears were affected in most rats. The lesions primarily involved the cartilaginous plate and were associated with two processes--chondrolysis and granulomatous inflammation. The detailed morphogenesis of the lesions is described, but the etiology of the lesions is unknown. Auricular chondropathy in rats and relapsing polychondritis in man are compared.

Microtia is a congenital disease with various degrees of severity, ranging from the presence of rudimentary and malformed vestigial structures to the total absence of the ear (anotia). The complex anatomy of the external ear and the necessity to provide good projection and symmetry make this reconstruction particularly difficult. The aim of this work is to report our surgical technique of microtic ear correction and to analyse the short and long term results. From 2000 to 2013, 210 patients affected by microtia were treated at the Maxillo-Facial Surgery Division, Head and Neck Department, Univ

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare autoimmune disorder of unknown cause characterized by recurrent inflammation of cartilage predominantly affecting the ears, nose, and upper airway. The bridge of the nose and surrounding tissue can collapse, producing a saddle nose deformity. Nasal reconstruction is often challenging in these patients due to impaired wound healing and graft take caused by autoimmune inflammatory disease and prolonged immunosuppressant treatment. Many different reconstruction techniques like autologous rib, fascia lata, and calvarial bone grafts have been used. Herein we repor

Microtia is a congenital condition of abnormal development of the outer ear. Tissue engineering of the ear is an alternative treatment option for microtia patients. However, for this approach, the identification of high regenerative cartilage progenitor cells is of vital importance. Raman analysis provides a novel, non-invasive, label-free diagnostic tool to detect distinctive biochemical features of single cells or tissues. Using micro-Raman spectroscopy, we were able to distinguish and characterize the particular molecular fingerprints of differentiated chondrocytes and perichondrocytes and

OBJECTIVE: We have further developed a method, first published in 1967 by Kaye but not widely used later, to correct protruding ears. To our knowledge, clinical experience with a closed otoplasty technique based on a large number of patients has not yet been published.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Of 442 ears in 4.5 years, 385 (200 patients, 15 one sided) were corrected using the minimally invasive technique. The key part of this technique to such otoplasty is the creation of a naturally appearing antihelix by combining permanent buried sutures and a conservative cartilage-breaking technique, both a

We reviewed 192 patients who had been treated for chronic otitis media. All operations were carried out at the Department of Otolaryngology, University of Tübingen. No patient had a previous ear operation and revision operations were excluded. The observation period varied from a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 4 1/2 years. The ossicular chain was partially destroyed in 43 ears (22.4%). Ossiculoplasty was performed using autologous ossicles. An inens was used in 31 ears and a malleus in 12 cases. The overall failure rate was 20.8%. Most recurrent perforations were found in middle-aged patien

The use of self-stabilizing, presculpted cartilage homografts for middle ear reconstruction has an established track record with long-term results equivalent to reconstruction methods using alloplastic material. This method affords several advantages over other techniques, which will be discussed in detail.

Three cases of relapsing polychondritis are reported. They all complained of dyspnea, which derived from tracheal involvement. Other clinical manifestations were saddle nose (3 cases), painful swelling of ear (2 cases), arthralgia (1 case) ophthalmodynia (1 case). The pathological examination of biopsied cartilage of the pinnae showed loss of basophils with cellular infiltration, fibrosis and breakdown of the matrix. We also performed PAP (Peroxidase-Anti-Peroxidase) staining of biopsied cartilage, which showed the deposition of IgG, C3, C4 and fibrinogen. The results suggested that the pathog
