The cost burden of falls in people with glaucoma in National Health Service Hospital Trusts in the UK.

Aims: Falls have devastating consequences in older people with a considerable cost burden. Glaucoma is a risk factor for falls, and patients with glaucoma who fall are at high risk of hospital admission. The aim was to quantify the cost burden of falls to NHS Trusts in people with glaucoma in the UK.Methods: Financial data were used to identify non-elective episodes and associated costs from 2012 to 2018, for all admissions where glaucoma was recorded as a secondary diagnosis and admissions for falls (all, with and without a glaucoma secondary diagnosis). A secondary diagnosis is only recorded

Epidemiologic evidence for the relation between socioeconomic status and depression, obesity, and diabetes.

Many of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States and other countries are associated with socioeconomic position. The … iors in health and disease risk are presented that highlight the striking associations between socioeconomic factors and chronic diseases. Data from these studies demonstrate that the effects of economic disadvantage are cumulative, with the greatest risk of poor mental and physical health seen among those who experienced sustained hardship over time.

A stochastic dynamic model of a dairy farm to evaluate the technical and economic performance under different scenarios.

Dairy farms need to improve their competitiveness through decisions that are often difficult to evaluate because they are highly dependent on many economic and technical factors. The objective of this project was to develop a stochastic and dynamic mathematical model to simulate the functioning of a dairy farm to evaluate the effect of changes in technical or economic factors on performance and profitability. Submodels were developed for reproduction, feeding, diseases, heifers, environmental factors, facilities, management, and economics. All these submodels were simulated on an animal-by-ani…

Prevalence of social and economic stressors among transgender veterans with alcohol and other drug use disorders.

Transgender persons have high rates of alcohol and other drug use disorders (AUD and DUD, respectively) and commonly experience social and economic stressors that may compound risk for adverse substance-related outcomes. National VA electronic health record data were extracted for all outpatients in each facility with documented alcohol screening 10/1/09-7/31/17. We describe the prevalence of eight individual-level social and economic stressors (barriers to accessing care, economic hardship, housing instability, homelessness, social and family problems, legal problems, military sexual trauma,

Longitudinal Relations among Perceived Economic Stress, Teacher-Student Relationships, and Cybervictimization: Exploring Within-Person Links.

Family economic hardship has been identified as a risk factor for adolescents' cybervictimization. Nevertheless, existing studies have primarily focused on objective economic conditions, and little is known about the within-person association between perceived economic stress and adolescents' cybervictimization and the mediating mechanisms underlying this association. To fill these gaps, the random intercept cross-lagged model was employed to examine the dynamic relations among perceived economic stress, teacher-student relationships, and cybervictimization. The data were obtained from a sampl

Exploring the reasons behind induced abortion among Iranian couples: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Induced abortion remains a significant reproductive health issue in Iran, shaped by complex socio-economic, cultural and legal factors. Despite its importance, limited evidence exists on the underlying motivations for seeking abortion in a context of restrictive laws and pronatalist policies. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the reasons underlying couples' decisions to seek induced abortion within the constraints of the current legal framework. DESIGN: Qualitative interview study, co-designed with couples with a history of induced abortion. METHODS: We conducted semi-stru

Regional variations in Mediterranean diet adherence: a sociodemographic and lifestyle analysis across Mediterranean and non-Mediterranean regions within the MEDIET4ALL project.

INTRODUCTION: The Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) is acknowledged for its health advantages; however, compliance with its principles differs by region and is influenced by geographical, cultural, economic, and life-style factors. This research examines regional differences in sociodemographic and lifestyle factors between Mediterranean (MC) and non-Mediterranean (NMC) countries, with a particular focus on adherence to the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle, as well as the associated barriers in each region. METHODS: The MEDIET4ALL international survey was conducted across 10 countries, and data we

Epidemiological profile and environmental determinants of Plasmodium falciparum infection in villages surrounding the Soum Agropole, Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Building dams and irrigation schemes as resilience measures against growing food insecurity and water scarcity may increase malaria risk in endemic settings. This study aims to assess the clinical and asymptomatic carriage of Plasmodium falciparum throughout the year and explores their association with socio-economic and weather factors in Nanoro, Burkina Faso. METHODS: A monthly household-based surveys were conducted from March 2022 to February 2023 in five villages located at variable distance (3-40 km) from the Soum dam located in the Nanoro Health district catchment area. Secondary gain influences the outcome of lumbar but not cervical disc surgery.

BACKGROUND: The expectation of monetary compensation has been associated with poor outcomes in lumbar discectomy, fueling a reluctance among surgeons to treat worker's compensation cases. This issue, however, has not been investigated in patients undergoing cervical disc surgery. This study analyzes the relationship between economic forms of secondary gain and surgical outcome in a group of patients with common pay scales, retirement plans, and disability programs. METHODS: All procedures were performed at the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center between 1993 and 1995; active duty military service

Interpersonal Violence in Five Regions in Asia: Ecological Risk Factors Associated with Perceptions of Justifiability of Violence.

In Asia, rates of interpersonal violence are increasing, with significant regional disparities. However, long-term, continental-scale research considering regional differences across the Asia regions is limited. Guided by the ecological model, we examined five ecological risk factors (low life satisfaction/happiness, economic hardship, neighborhood disadvantage, patriarchal values, and religiosity) associated with perceptions of justification of interpersonal violence (i.e., intimate partner violence [IPV] against wife, child physical abuse, and violence against others) in five regions in Asia

Social and Demographic Predictors of Gender Inequality Among Heterosexual Couples Expecting a Child in Central Kenya.

Imbalance of power and equality in sexual relationships is linked to health in various ways, including (1) reduced ability to get informatio … ck of equality in earnings. This study contributes to the literature on the influence of social and economic factors on gender inequality, especially in Kenya which has a high burden of HIV/AIDS. Our results show some areas to improve these specific factors (including education and employment opportunities) or create interventions for targeted populations to poten …

Economic shocks predict increases in child wasting prevalence.

In low and middle income countries macroeconomic volatility is common, and severe negative economic shocks can substantially increase poverty and food insecurity. Less well understood are the implications of these contractions for child acute malnutrition (wasting), a major risk factor for under-5 mortality. This study explores the nutritional impacts of economic growth shocks over 1990-2018 by linking wasting outcomes collected for 1.256 million children from 52 countries to lagged annual changes in economic growth. Estimates suggest that a 10% annual decline in national income increases mode

Economic Evaluations in Electrophysiology in the Last 15 Years: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Electrophysiology (EP) procedures, including cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) and ablations, are widely used to manage arrhythmias and heart failure. These interventions, though effective, require substantial resources, prompting the need for systematic economic evaluations to inform healthcare decision-making. METHODS: A systematic review of studies from 2007 to 2024 was conducted in two phases. Phase one assessed trends in economic evaluations of EP procedures, analyzing 129 studies across regions and timeframes. Phase two focused on cost-effectiveness analyses of

Audiology at the Intersection of Labor, Revenue, and Professional Taxonomy.

A healthcare profession's economic position is determined not only by its educational preparation or clinical scope, but also by how its services are classified, reimbursed, and translated into professional labor demand. This article examines audiology through the integrated framework of professional taxonomy, revenue generation, and labor economics to explain the structural factors underlying the profession's current economic position within the U.S. healthcare system. Drawing on principles of labor economics and evidence synthesized from companion analyses of workforce supply and professiona

The post-opium scenario and rubber in northern Laos: Alternative Western and Chinese models of development.

BACKGROUND: In the past few years rubber planting has spread rapidly throughout northern Laos, especially in Luang Namtha province that borders China. The impetus for this boom has come partly from the spiralling demand for rubber in China (now the world's largest rubber consumer), the high world prices for rubber, and China's promotion of overseas investment through its opium-replacement policy. These economic factors have converged with the desperate need of impoverished highlanders in northern Laos to replace opium as a cash crop as a consequence of a recent opium-eradication campaign and i…

Ecological resilience and psychosocial utility among adolescents during societal instability: A utility-based economic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent psychosocial well-being has become a major global public health concern, particularly during periods of societal instability. Although ecological resilience systems within families, schools, and peer environments are recognized as important protective factors, little is known about their broader population-health and economic significance. This study examined whether ecological resilience is associated with psychosocial utility and explored its potential economic relevance using a utility-based evaluation framework. METHODS: Using data from 22,818 participants in the Is
