Technical improvements in MR imaging have resulted in the ability to detect soft tissue and bone pathology, with great facility in the elbow joint. This allows application of MRI to the elbow in the same valuable ways it has been used in other joints for a much longer period.

Baseball pitcher throwing biomechanics are important to understanding the pathophysiology and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging appearances of injuries in baseball pitchers. Baseball pitchers experience repetitive excessive valgus forces at the elbow. Typical injuries are secondary to medial joint distraction, lateral joint compression, and rotatory forces at the olecranon. MR imaging is useful for evaluation of the elbow in baseball pitchers.

The elbow, a synovial hinge joint, is a common site of disease. Ultrasonography (US) has become an important imaging modality for evaluating pathologic conditions of the elbow. This powerful imaging tool has the advantages of outstanding spatial resolution, clinical correlation with direct patient interaction, dynamic assessment of disease, and the ability to guide interventions. Unlike most other imaging modalities, US allows the contralateral elbow to be imaged simultaneously, providing an internal control and comparison with normal anatomy. A useful approach to US evaluation of the elbow is

AIM: To assess whether ultrasound with intraarticular injection of saline increases the detection of intraarticular bodies of the elbow.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twelve patients (age range 21-42 years, mean 29 years; 8 male, 4 female) referred over a 2-year period with an equivocal history of elbow locking and plain radiographs had a joint injection of at least 12 ml of sterile saline during ultrasound examination. No patient had a joint effusion before injection. Surgical correlation was available in six patients.
RESULTS: Ten patients had intraarticular bodies but these were demonstrated only

BACKGROUND: Nursemaid's elbow is the most common upper extremity injury in children under 5 years of age. However, the exact pathomechanism underlying the nursemaid's elbow remains elusive, and approximate one-third of patients present with a nonclassical history. Using a high-frequency ultrasound probe, we attempted to determine the relationship between the anterior edge of the posterior synovial fringe and the peripheral rim of the radial head epiphysis during rotation. It is possible that the primary reason for the nursemaid's elbow is due to the pronator position.
METHODS: Twenty-one pati

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether ultrasonography can be used to explore the medial and lateral ligament structures during the acute phase of a closed elbow injury.
METHODS: A single-center, prospective study performed between December 2019 and June 2020, including patients who suffered a radial head fracture or elbow dislocation. Two radiologists did a blinded analysis using ultrasonography of visibility, injury grade, and presence of bone avulsion for the radial collateral ligament (RCL), lateral ulnar collateral ligament (LUCL), annular ligament (AL), and anterior (MCLant) and posterior bundles

[Purpose] Hemiplegia occurs when posturing with a dominant flexor tone is present in the upper limbs, thus preventing increased abnormal tone. We attempted to improve the side effects of this condition using elbow re-positioning with non-elastic tape; this method is used to modulate abnormal muscle tone in chronic hemiplegic stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] Fourteen post-stroke patients were included in this study. Non-elastic tape was applied to the elbow joint in a spiral manner. Before and after the tape was applied, the degree of spasticity (hypertonia) was measured in the elbow fle…

We investigated the characteristics of hemophilic arthropathy of the elbow joint in 32 patients 5-12 years of age who had been followed-up from infancy. Restriction of forearm rotation and elbow extension was the most common finding in the joints with recurrent hemarthrosis. Limitation of rotation resulted mainly from hypertrophy of the radial head. Advancement of bone age was also commonly observed in the joints with hemarthrosis. Mild to moderate hemophilic arthropathy was associated with greater advancement of bone age than was severe arthropathy. There was a discrepancy between the growth …

The Monteggia injury, a combination of an ulnar fracture and proximal radial dislocation, is an uncommon but high-stakes paediatric injury that is frequently missed at initial presentation. Early recognition is crucial, as delayed diagnosis is associated with malunion, instability, restrictions in rotation, and deformity. The aim of this review is to highlight key concepts relevant to exams and clinical practice, including the epidemiology, anatomy, classification, and evidence-based management of both acute and neglected Monteggia injuries.

The radiocapitellar line (RCL) has been widely used to diagnose elbow dislocation. However, there are limitations to the RCL, with the cartilaginous portion of bone making interpretation of radiographs difficult. The study aims to show that the radiocoronoid line, which connects two points on the medial aspect of the radius, proximal to the radial tuberosity, is more suited to diagnose elbow dislocations in the anterior-posterior projection. This study also observes factors affecting accuracy of the radiocapitellar line. The radiographs of 50 normal and 17 laterally dislocated elbows were obta

CASE: The authors present a case of syringobulbia in a setting of elbow arthropathy due to syringomyelia. The patient had painless elbow instability with subtle neurological findings such as ulnar neuropathy, palatal palsy, and dysphonia. As she denied surgery, she was managed with physiotherapy and orthosis. At 24 months of follow-up, she had good clinical outcome without neurological or functional worsening.
CONCLUSION: Many patients with neuropathic joints due to syringomyelia present to an orthopaedician before a neurologist. A high index of suspicion and thorough neurological examination

Simple dislocations of the elbow or dislocations occurring without an associated fracture are common injuries. Evaluation of these injuries must include an assessment of the entire involved upper extremity and a complete neurovascular examination. Principles of management include a prompt, controlled reduction, a determination of postreduction stability, and an immediate rehabilitation protocol that considers the stability of the joint following reduction. For those joints that are stable throughout the arc of motion, an unrestricted range of motion protocol can be started. When instability is

Seventeen patients with severe hemophilic synovitis were reviewed for an average of 59.6 months after surgical synovectomy to record radiographic progression of arthropathic changes, frequency of hemarthroses, and range of motion. There were 12 knees and five elbows in the study. Most joints showed some radiographic progression of the arthropathy. In aged patients, two knees progressed to end-stage disease. The frequency of hemarthroses was greatly decreased in all joints and especially in the elbow. Range of motion was preserved for most knees but was reduced significantly for the elbow. Thre

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this prospective study was to evaluate the use of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of medial coronoid process di … raphy can be a helpful additional diagnostic tool to confirm medial coronoid process disease of the elbow joint before performing arthroscopy in unclear cases. Further studies will be needed to evaluate the use of higher frequency transducers and determine if it could improve the diagnostic value of ultrasonography.

A 20-year-old woman was referred to our clinic complaining of recurrent subluxation of her right elbow. A posterolateral rotatory instability test revealed that she had insufficiency of the lateral collateral ligament. She was surgically treated; the ligament was reconstructed by using the palmaris longus tendon. A year after operation, she had no pain in her elbow, and regained full range of elbow motion. The function of the lateral collateral ligament is often overlooked. We, therefore, dissected 24 elbow joints and studied anatomically in order to confirm the origin and insertion of the lat…

Lateral epicondylitis (LE) is a common orthopedic problem. It is a not life-threatening condition and does not cause severe disability, but it is a burden in everyday life. This paper focuses on this area and provides guidance on how to effectively perform US examination of the lateral part of the elbow. We will provide recent evidence on LE with particular emphasis on the role of the ultrasound in diagnosis, treatment, and disease management and we will exemplify the pathology with representative cases.
