Immediate effects of binaural beat stimulation on prefrontal cortical activation after cycling exercise: an electroencephalography-based study.

Binaural beat stimulation (BBS) has been shown to activate the cerebral cortex and promote physical and mental relaxation. This study invest … mbined with pink noise and the other day by a sham BBS intervention. An eight-channel dry-electrode electroencephalography system was used to record the changes of prefrontal cortical activation at six time points before and after the cycling exercise. A total of 52 participants completed the study. Compared to the sham stimulus, the theta-frequency BBS combined with pi …

Validation of portable, semi-dry electrode-based electroencephalography device for its application in brain-computer interface solutions.

In recent years, commercial lightweight electroencephalography (EEG) headsets are gaining popularity in neuroscience. These devices commonly utilize only a few dry electrodes in specific locations and signal quality is often inferior compared to that of their traditional counterparts. In this study, we wanted to assess the feasibility of portable, paste-less, passive electrode-based EEG headset MindRove vision (VSN) for laboratory use. Three paradigms were implemented for acquiring visual evoked potential (VEP), P300 event-related potential and motor execution task (ME) related cortical patter…

Electroencephalography and optical neuromonitoring predict short-term outcomes in neonates undergoing therapeutic hypothermia for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

Electroencephalography (EEG) and optical neuromonitoring were used to predict short-term outcomes in neonates undergoing therapeutic hypothermia (TH) for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Fifty-two neonates undergoing TH for HIE were prospectively recruited. Continuous EEG monitoring was initiated within 24 h of life and a quantitative discontinuity index was calculated. Combined frequency-domain near infrared spectroscopy (FDNIRS) and diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) were initiated within 48 h of life and used to measure cerebral hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SO2) and a cerebral bl…

Suvorexant alters dynamics of the sleep-electroencephalography-power spectrum and depressive-symptom trajectories during inpatient opioid withdrawal.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Opioid withdrawal is an aversive experience that often exacerbates depressive symptoms and poor sleep. The aims of the present study were to examine the effects of suvorexant on oscillatory sleep-electroencephalography (EEG) band power during medically managed opioid withdrawal, and to examine their association with withdrawal severity and depressive symptoms. METHODS: Participants with opioid use disorder (N = 38: age-range:21-63, 87% male, 45% white) underwent an 11-day buprenorphine taper, in which they were randomly assigned to suvorexant (20 mg [n = 14] or 40 mg [n = 12…

Amplitude-integrated electroencephalography showed alterations in cerebral activity in monochorionic twins with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.

AIM: Monochorionic twins are at higher risk of perinatal mortality and morbidity, primarily due to pregnancy-related complications, such as twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). We aimed to investigate whether amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) signals are different between monochorionic twins with and without TTTS. METHODS: This was a retrospective single-centre study conducted at Innsbruck Medical University Hospital, Austria. Preterm infants born before 32 weeks of gestation between 6 November 2010 and 6 December 2022 were eligible. The aEEG was analysed for the total m…

Pre-Slaughter Stunning of Farmed Atlantic Halibut in CO2-Saturated Seawater: Assessment of Unconsciousness by Electroencephalography (EEG).

As fish welfare becomes a growing concern, it is important to ensure humane treatment during slaughter. This study aimed to assess the onset of unconsciousness in Atlantic halibut immersed in CO2-saturated seawater through electroencephalography (EEG). Of the 29 fish studied, 10 exhibited escape attempts, indicating aversion to CO2-saturated water despite its oxygenation. EEG signals showed four distinct phases: transitional, excitation (high amplitude-high frequency), suppressed, and iso-electric phases. The onset of the suppressed phase, indicative of unconsciousness, occurred on average 258…

Incidence change of postoperative delirium after implementation of processed electroencephalography monitoring during surgery: a retrospective evaluation study.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common complication in the elderly, which is associated with poor outcomes after surgery. Recognized as predisposing factors for POD, anesthetic exposure and burst suppression during general anesthesia can be minimized with intraoperative processed electroencephalography (pEEG) monitoring. In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether implementation of intraoperative pEEG-guided anesthesia is associated with incidence change of POD. METHODS: In this retrospective evaluation study, we analyzed intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IVPCA) dataset …

Investigating the links between parent-child interactions and context-specific electroencephalography asymmetry: Neurophysiology behind a frustrating task.

This study investigated the relations between parent-child interactions and infant brain activity in the context of a frustration eliciting task. Specifically, electroencephalography (EEG) data were recorded and processed to provide alpha frontal asymmetry indicators linked with approach/avoidance emotions and motivation. These data were collected from 53 mother-infant dyads during baseline and a toy retraction task, with play interactions coded for caregiving quality indicators. Hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses indicated that infants of more sensitive/responsive mothers and th…

Increased Alpha-Band Connectivity During Tic Suppression in Children With Tourette Syndrome Revealed by Source Electroencephalography Analyses.

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder involving chronic motor and phonic tics. Most individuals with TS can suppress their tics for at least a short period of time. Yet, the brain correlates of tic suppression are still poorly understood. METHODS: In the current study, high-density electroencephalography was recorded during a resting-state and a tic suppression session in 72 children with TS. Functional connectivity between cortical regions was assessed in the alpha band (8-13 Hz) using an electroencephalography source connectivity method. Graph theory and networ…

Use of Machine Learning for Predicting Escitalopram Treatment Outcome From Electroencephalography Recordings in Adult Patients With Depression.

IMPORTANCE: Social and economic costs of depression are exacerbated by prolonged periods spent identifying treatments that would be effective for a particular patient. Thus, a tool that reliably predicts an individual patient's response to treatment could significantly reduce the burden of depression. OBJECTIVE: To estimate how accurately an outcome of escitalopram treatment can be predicted from electroencephalographic (EEG) data on patients with depression. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prognostic study used a support vector machine classifier to predict treatment outcome using d

Testing between the gunpowder fuse and the filling-hose analogy for mental curve tracing using electroencephalography: boom!

Curve tracing occurs when a line is followed covertly to accomplish a task, for example, to determine whether two landmarks are on the same line or not (could Highway 61 take Robert Johnson from New Orleans to St Louis?). Previous work suggests that attention either moves along the curve, momentarily activating local representations of the curve during this process, leaving little or no trace of this activation once attention has passed, or attention spreads along the curve, resulting in an activated state along the entire portion of the curve that was traced. We re-examined this issue using e

Inhibition of Lateral Prefrontal Cortex Produces Emotionally Biased First Impressions: A Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and Electroencephalography Study.

Optimal functioning in everyday life requires the ability to override reflexive emotional responses and prevent affective spillover to situations or people unrelated to the source of emotion. In the current study, we investigated whether the lateral prefrontal cortex (lPFC) causally regulates the influence of emotional information on subsequent judgments. We disrupted left lPFC function using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and recorded electroencephalography (EEG) before and after. Subjects evaluated the likeability of novel neutral faces after a brief exposure to a happy or fearful f…

Amplitude-integrated electroencephalography shows mild delays in electrocortical activity in preterm infants born small for gestational age.

AIM: Being born small for gestational age (SGA) seems to be a relevant risk factor for long-term neurologic deficits. We compared the differences between amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) signals in very preterm infants born small for gestational age (SGA) and those in age-matched infants born appropriate size for gestational age (AGA). METHODS: We performed serial aEEG recording on 305 infants: 255 (83.6%) were AGA, and 50 (16.3%) were SGA. RESULTS: The number of bursts per hour decreased over time in both groups, but was higher in the SGA group at every time point. On day …

Source analysis of beta-synchronisation and cortico-muscular coherence after movement termination based on high resolution electroencephalography.

We hypothesized that post-movement beta synchronization (PMBS) and cortico-muscular coherence (CMC) during movement termination relate to each other and have similar role in sensorimotor integration. We calculated the parameters and estimated the sources of these phenomena. We measured 64-channel EEG simultaneously with surface EMG of the right first dorsal interosseus muscle in 11 healthy volunteers. In Task1, subjects kept a medium-strength contraction continuously; in Task2, superimposed on this movement, they performed repetitive self-paced short contractions. In Task3 short contractions we

Cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen and amplitude-integrated electroencephalography during early reperfusion after hypoxia-ischemia in piglets.

The therapeutic window following perinatal hypoxia-ischemia is brief, and early clinical signs of injury can be subtle. Electroencephalography (EEG) represents the most promising early diagnostic of hypoxia-ischemia; however, some studies have questioned the sensitivity and specificity of EEG. The present study investigated the use of both near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) measurements of the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO(2)) and amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG) to detect the severity of hypoxia-ischemia after 1 h of reperfusion in newborn piglets (10 insult, 3 control). The CMRO(2) w…
