Lymphatic filariasis among the Ezza people of Ebonyi State, eastern Nigeria.

A total of 1,243 Ezza people living in 10 communities of Ebonyi State, eastern Nigeria were examined between July 2002-January 2003 for lymp … control of human filarisis in this endemic foci. Clinical signs and symptoms of the disease include elephantiasis, hydrocoele, dermatitis and periodic fever. Clinical symptoms without microfilaraemia and microfilaraemia without clinical symptoms were also observed. Of 1,603 mosquitoes dissected, Anopheles gambiae, An. funestus and Culex quinquefasciatus showed …

Filarial antibody responses in Wuchereria bancrofti transmission area are related to parasitological but not clinical status.

In Wuchereria bancrofti transmission areas, three groups of individuals have been identified, according to the presence or absence of microf … cal status of individuals but not with clinical symptoms such as hydroceles or limb lymphangitis or elephantiasis. The reduction of filarial-specific immunoglobulin levels was higher after treatment with diethylcarbamazine, than ivermectin, which likely reflects the better effect of the former on W. bancrofti adult worms. However, reduction of antibody levels w …

To evaluate the possible role of ethnicity in susceptibility to filarial infection, a comparative study of the prevalence of filarial infect … he prevalence of chronic filarial disease (22.6%) amongst tribals were significantly lower. No true elephantiasis was observed in tribals. No significant difference was observed in their humoral immune response, although the antifilarial antibody of IgG class in all stages of filarial infection was lower in tribals than in mainlanders. The results did not revea …

Living with Filariasis: Unseen Struggles of a Neglected Disease.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a long-lasting, debilitating parasitic infection that has remained an immense burden to the endemic areas globally in the realms of physical, psychological, and socioeconomic suffering. LF presents itself in the form of lymphedema, hydrocele, and disfigurement, and limits motor activity, working capabilities, and interaction processes between people, significantly reducing self-esteem and life quality. LF brings significant socio-psychological distress besides the physical one. A decline in self-esteem often results in anxiety and depression; recognizable deformiti

Public perceptions of genomic studies and hereditary diseases in Aari community, South Omo Zone, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Genetic and genomic research is revolutionizing precision medicine; however, addressing ethical and cultural aspects is crucial to ensure ethical conduct and respect for community values and beliefs. This study explored the beliefs, perceptions and concerns of the Aari community in South Ethiopia regarding genetic concepts, hereditary diseases and ethical research practices related to sample collection, storage and sharing. METHODS: In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with community elders, health officials, tuberculosis patients and apparently healthy i

An evaluation of mental health integration in the neglected tropical diseases program in Zamfara, North-west Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Mental health and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are critical in healthcare systems, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Several policies are planned or designed by health stakeholders to address the mental health needs of people affected by NTDs. Still, the impact of such policies seems to be of no consequence. METHODS: The GAD-7 and PHQ-9 tools were used to determine the rate of depression and anxiety, respectively, among people affected by skin NTDs (leprosy and lymphatic filariasis [LF]) in Zamfara State, North-west Nigeria. The study also evaluated the barrier

Pharmacokinetics of Moxidectin combined with Albendazole or Albendazole plus Diethylcarbamazine for Bancroftian Filariasis.

Moxidectin (MOX) is a milbemycin endectocide recently approved by the U.S. FDA for the treatment of onchocerciasis in persons at least 12 years of age. MOX has been shown to have a good safety profile in recent clinical trials. The efficacy of MOX for the treatment of lymphatic filariasis (LF) and its potential use in mass drug administration protocols for the elimination of LF is currently under evaluation. In the context of a clinical trial, we investigated the pharmacokinetics and drug interactions of a combination of MOX plus albendazole (ALB) with or without diethylcarbamazine (DEC) compa

Progress towards the implementation of control programmes for strongyloidiasis in endemic areas: estimation of number of adults in need of ivermectin for strongyloidiasis.

The World Health Organization has started a process to issue guidelines for the control of strongyloidiasis. The guidelines might recommend to implement preventive chemotherapy (PC) at community level (i.e. to all individuals above 5 years of age), over a defined prevalence threshold. We previously estimated the number of school-age children (SAC) who would need PC. Here we estimate the number of people above 15 years of age who might be included in PC for strongyloidiasis. Based on previous Strongyloides prevalence estimates and on countries' age distribution, we retrieved the number of adult

Impact of basic psychological support on stigma and the mental well-being of people with disabilities due to leprosy and lymphatic filariasis: a postintervention evaluation study.

BACKGROUND: A peer support intervention, called basic psychological support for people affected by neglected tropical diseases (BPS-N), was piloted in India to improve mental well-being and social participation and to reduce stigma among people with disabilities due to leprosy or lymphatic filariasis. Preintervention and postintervention assessments showed improvements in mental well-being and reductions in depression and stigma. This study aimed to further evaluate this intervention at approximately 2 mo after its completion. METHODS: Scales were administered to 62 clients to measure stigma,

Integration of services for Neglected Tropical Diseases and mental health in Nigeria: development of a practical model informed by international recommendations, contextual factors and service-user perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Mental health care is now recognised as essential for people affected by NTDs, but accessible services are rare. This paper presents results of a prevalence study for depression and anxiety among people living with leprosy and lymphatic filariasis, and collation of user perspectives on needs and priorities for a new service. METHODS: Prevalence of mental conditions was carried out with 141 people living with leprosy and lymphatic filariasis and matched controls. Those who screened positive for depression or anxiety were interviewed in a qualitative study to understand their experi

Distinct N-Linked Immunoglobulin G Glycosylation Patterns Are Associated With Chronic Pathology and Asymptomatic Infections in Human Lymphatic Filariasis.

Lymphatic filariasis presents a complex spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic microfilariaemic (MF+) to chronic pathology (CP), including lymphedema and elephantiasis. Emerging evidence suggests a link between the physiopathology of filarial infections and antibody properties. Post-translational glycosylation has been shown to play a key role in the modulation of antibodies' effector functions. Here, we investigated the link between total IgG-N-glycosylation patterns and the physiopathology of human lymphatic filariasis using UPLC-FLD/ESI-MS comparison of N-glycan profi…

Factors Associated with the Acceptability of Mass Drug Administration for Filariasis: A Systematic Review.

Mass drug administration (MDA) has been implemented as a tool to eliminate lymphatic filariasis. Acceptability among susceptible populations is crucial to achieving MDA effective coverage. This systematic review aims to present and systematically determine the factors associated with the acceptability of MDA. Articles related to factors associated with acceptability were collected electronically from three different databases (Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed). Four pairs of independent reviewers screened the titles and abstracts of the collected data, stored in EndnoteX7, against the inclus

Diethylcarbamazine, TRP channels and Ca2+ signaling in cells of the Ascaris intestine.

The nematode parasite intestine absorbs nutrients, is involved in innate immunity, can metabolize xenobiotics and as we show here, is also a site of action of the anthelmintic, diethylcarbamazine. Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) is used to treat lymphatic filariasis and activates TRP-2, GON-2 & CED-11 TRP channels in Brugia malayi muscle cells producing spastic paralysis. DEC also has stimulatory effects on ascarid nematode parasites. Using PCR techniques, we detected, in Ascaris suum intestine, message for: Asu-trp-2, Asu-gon-2, Asu-ced-11, Asu-ocr-1, Asu-osm-9 and Asu-trpa-1. Comparison of amino-ac

Morbidity management and disability prevention: An agenda for developing nations initiated in India.

Treatment of patients with lymphedema focuses on reducing limb volume with more recent recognition of the importance of qualityof- life issues. Perhaps due to the incidence of filariasis-related lymphedema compared to breast cancer-related lymphedema in the western world, the Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) in Kerala, India has developed a low-cost and culturally acceptable treatment with quality-of-life focus that works well in that area. Worldwide, there is also recognition of chronic edema as a potential co-morbidity and the recent advances in genetic analysis continue to shed light

Double BR-OVT: a new trap model for collecting eggs and adult mosquitoes from Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes spp.

The circulation of arboviruses throughout the world and the maintenance of lymphatic filariasis endemicity in tropical countries, combined with the lack of vaccines and specific treatments, highlight the importance of reducing the populations of mosquitoes involved in the transmission of these pathogens, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus. To contribute to the development of new strategies for monitoring and controlling these culicids, we evaluated the performance of the Double BR-OVT trap individually and in pairs, in the field. After 18 months, the Double BR-OVT traps captured a mean o
