Do Attachment Style and Emotion Regulation Strategies Indicate Distress in Predictive Testing?

Predictive genetic testing for a neurogenetic disorder evokes strong emotions, and may lead to distress. The aim of this study is to investigate whether attachment style and emotion regulation strategies are associated with distress in persons who present for predictive testing for a neurogenetic disorder, and whether these psychological traits predict distress after receiving test results. Self-report scales were used to assess attachment insecurity (anxiety and avoidance) and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies (self-blame, rumination, catastrophizing) in adults at 50 % risk for Huntin

Adolescent Substance Use & Psychopathology: Interactive Effects of Cortisol Reactivity and Emotion Regulation.

How are emotional processes associated with the increased rates of substance use and psychological disorders commonly observed during adolescence? An index of emotion-related physiological arousal-cortisol reactivity-and subjective emotion regulation have both been independently linked to substance use and psychological difficulties among youth. The current study (N = 134 adolescents) sought to elucidate the interactive effects of cortisol reactivity following a stressful parent-child interaction task and self-reported emotion regulation ability on adolescents' substance use and externalizing

Binge eating in bariatric surgery candidates: The role of insecure attachment and emotion regulation.

Binge eating has a high prevalence among bariatric patients and is associated with post-surgical weight gain. This study examined the potential mediating role of emotion regulation difficulties in the relation between attachment insecurity and binge eating among this population. Participants were 1388 adult pre-bariatric surgery candidates from an accredited bariatric surgery assessment centre in Toronto, Ontario. Participants completed measures of psychological functioning, including attachment style and emotion regulation. Mediation analyses revealed that difficulties with emotion regulation

Behavioural and neural correlates of self-focused emotion regulation in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: In healthy individuals, voluntary modification of self-relevance has proven effective in regulating subjective emotional experience as well as physiologic responses evoked by emotive stimuli. As social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by both altered emotional and self-related processing, we tested if emotion regulation through self-focused reappraisal is effective in individuals with SAD. METHODS: While undergoing 3 T functional magnetic resonance imaging, individuals with SAD and matched healthy controls either passively viewed neutral and aversive pictures or actively in

Warm and harsh parenting as mediators of the relation between maternal and adolescent emotion regulation.

Maternal hostility/rejection and warmth were considered as potential mediators of the relation between mothers' and adolescents' emotion regulation. Participants were first-year high school students living in Ankara, Turkey and their mothers (N = 365). Scales assessing emotion regulation difficulties and maternal hostility/rejection and warmth were administered to both the adolescents and their mothers. Maternal hostility/rejection, but not warmth, mediated the relation between maternal and adolescent emotion regulation. For girls there was, additionally, a direct effect of maternal emotion re

Emotion regulation difficulties in anorexia nervosa: Relationship to self-perceived sensory sensitivity.

Changes in sensation (e.g., prickly skin) are crucial constituents of emotional experience, and the intensity of perceived changes has been linked to emotional intensity and dysregulation. The current study examined the relationship between sensory sensitivity and emotion regulation among adults with anorexia nervosa (AN), a disorder characterised by disturbance in the experience of the body. Twenty-one individuals with AN, 20 individuals with AN who were weight-restored, and 23 typical controls completed self-report measures of sensory sensitivity and emotion regulation. AN participants repor

The other side of rumination: reflective pondering as a strategy for regulating emotions in social situations.

Recent studies have questioned the idea of rumination as a unitary dysfunctional process and identified an adaptive subcomponent: reflective pondering. We tested whether reflective pondering could represent an adaptive strategy of regulating emotions, and contrasted it with reappraisal and acceptance, strategies linked to major psychotherapeutic approaches. Participants (103 students) received training in one of these and were exposed to a negative mood induction consisting of social scenarios, both in the presence and in the absence of the specific emotion regulation instruction. Acceptance w

Prenatal stress effects on emotion regulation differ by genotype and sex in prepubertal rats.

Behavioral effects of different prenatal stress (PNS) schedules were examined in prepubertal "depressive/anxious-like" WKY and control Wistar rats. Pregnant dams received 1 hr daily restraint stress on gestational days 14-20 or on 7 randomly scheduled days, or remained undisturbed. Offspring were tested during postnatal days 29-35 in social play, forced swim-test, open field, and novelty tests. PNS induced an increase in anxiety-like behaviors in WKY, particularly in females, while seemingly reducing depressive-like behavior in the swim test. However, very high post-stress corticosterone level

Emotion regulation and aggressive behavior in preschoolers: the mediating role of social information processing.

This study examined whether the relation between maladaptive emotion regulation and aggression was mediated by deviant social information processing (SIP). Participants were 193 preschool children. Emotion regulation and aggression were rated by teachers. Deviant SIP (i.e., attribution of hostile intent, aggressive response generation, aggressive response evaluation and decision) was measured from children's responses to hypothetical social conflicts. Findings revealed that the relation between maladaptive emotion regulation and aggression was direct and not mediated by SIP biases (i.e., aggre

The cumulative impact of sexual revictimization on emotion regulation difficulties: an examination of female inmates.

The present study examined associations between child sexual abuse (CSA), adult sexual victimization, and emotion regulation difficulties in a sample of 168 incarcerated women. Approximately 50% of the participants reported CSA, 54% reported adult sexual victimization, and 38% reported sexual revictimization (i.e., CSA and adult victimization). Revictimized women reported significantly greater difficulties with several facets of emotion regulation when compared to singly victimized and nonvictimized women. Interestingly, singly victimized women did not demonstrate greater emotion regulation de

How does stigma "get under the skin"?: the mediating role of emotion regulation.

Stigma is a risk factor for mental health problems, but few studies have considered how stigma leads to psychological distress. The present research examined whether specific emotion-regulation strategies account for the stigma-distress association. In an experience-sampling study, rumination and suppression occurred more on days when stigma-related stressors were reported than on days when these stressors were not reported, and rumination mediated the relationship between stigma-related stress and psychological distress. The effect of social support on distress was moderated by the concealabi

Emotion regulation and internalizing symptoms in a longitudinal study of sexual minority and heterosexual adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority adolescents appear to be at increased risk for internalizing disorders relative to their heterosexual peers, but there is a paucity of research explaining this elevated risk. Emotion regulation deficits are increasingly understood as important predictors of internalizing psychopathology among general samples of adolescents. The present study sought to examine whether deficits in emotion regulation could account for disparities in internalizing symptoms between sexual minority and heterosexual adolescents. METHODS: The present study utilized longitudinal data from a

How do cancer patients manage unattainable personal goals and regulate their emotions?

OBJECTIVES: This article addressed the role of goal adjustment (i.e. disengagement from unattainable goals and reengagement in alternative goals) and cognitive emotion-regulation strategies (i.e. rumination, catastrophizing, positive refocusing) in cancer patients' psychological well-being. We expected that patients who are better able to disengage from unattainable goals, identify alternative goals, and regulate their emotions by positive refocusing and not engaging in rumination and catastrophizing would experience less negative and more positive affect. DESIGN: In this cross-sectional stud

The Influencing Factors of Physical Exercise on the Social and Emotional Abilities of College Students: A Chain-Mediated Effect Based on Emotion Regulation and Self-Efficacy.

The university period represents a critical transition for college students, marking their progression from adolescence to adulthood and from the familial and school environments into broader society. Focusing on the enhancement of students' social-emotional competence aligns with the developmental requirements of educational modernization in China. However, under the combined influence of severe external environments and internal factors, an increasing number of university students are prone to developing negative emotions, which poses potential risks to the healthy development of school educ

Emotion Regulation and Emotion Reactivity in Callous-Unemotional (CU) Traits: The Role of Dynamic Physiological Indicators in Youth with Primary and Secondary CU Traits.

Core features of callous-unemotional (CU) traits (e.g., low empathy, lack of guilt, callousness) are underpinned by emotion processing deficits including dysfunction in emotion reactivity (ERc) and emotion regulation (ER). Recent research has suggested the presence of heterogeneity in CU traits, such that the primary variant is biologically rooted and marked by hypoarousal, whereas the secondary variant develops as a response to maltreatment and is marked by hyperarousal. To date, physiological measurement of ERc and ER processes via the parasympathetic nervous system have focused on static me

Why do feelings persist over time in daily life? Investigating the role of emotion-regulation strategies in the process underlying emotional inertia.

Emotions do not simply turn on and off again in an instant; rather, emotions rise and fall gradually, often persisting for a considerable period. Although it is normative for emotions to show a degree of momentum-a phenomenon known as emotional inertia-the tendency for emotions to be overly persistent has been associated with psychological maladjustment. However, the mechanisms underlying emotional inertia remain unclear. We aimed to fill this gap in the present study by investigating how the persistence of affect over time (emotional inertia) is mediated-at the within-person level-by the use

The effect of Barlow's unified protocol on emotional symptoms, pain catastrophizing, and fear of movement in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: Emotion regulation as a mechanism of change.

This randomized clinical trial evaluated the Unified Protocol (UP) for reducing emotional symptoms in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, with emotion regulation as a potential mediator. Fifty-two RA patients were randomly assigned to UP or a standard-treatment group, receiving eight UP sessions versus usual medical care. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included the DASS-21, DERS, Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), and Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK). Results showed that the UP significantly improved emotional regulation and reduced anxiety, depression, and stress compared with the c…
