In utero ventriculosubgaleal shunt placement in a fetal lamb model: Phase 1 technical insights.

BACKGROUND: Progressive ventriculomegaly and the resulting irreversible brain damage may be mitigated through timely diversion prenatal inte … oss and histological methods confirmed typical hydrocephalic changes, including altered and denuded ependyma. However, more than half of the catheters were macroscopically obstructed with tissue debris and fibrin (four out of seven). CONCLUSION: Prenatal placement of the VSGS was technically successful in all cases, meaning the shunt could be inserted in …

Periventricular gradient of T1 tissue alterations in multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Pathology in multiple sclerosis is not homogenously distributed. Recently, it has been shown that structures adjacent to CSF are more severely affected. A gradient of brain tissue involvement was shown with more severe pathology in periventricular areas and in proximity to brain surfaces such as the subarachnoid spaces and ependyma, and hence termed the "surface-in" gradient. Here, we study whether (i) the surface-in gradient of periventricular tissue alteration measured by T1 relaxometry is already present in early multiple sclerosis patients, (ii) how it differs between early and …

Prevention of postoperative subdural fluid collections following transcortical transventricular approach.

BACKGROUND: Subdural fluid collections appear in about 39% of patients after the removal of intra- and paraventricular tumors. This extracerebral fluid collection requires surgical intervention when progressive fluid accumulation takes place. The authors retrospectively and prospectively studied the efficacy of gelfoam and fibrin adhesive in closing cortical and ependymal defects after intraventricular and/or paraventricular lesion resection to prevent the development of SFCs. METHODS: From 1999 to 2004, we used gelfoam and fibrin adhesive on the cortical and ependymal defects of 28 patients …

Extrapituitary TSH in early chick embryos: Pit-1 dependence?

The expression of the thyrotropin (TSH) gene in the pituitary gland is thought to be dependent upon the pituitary-specific transcription factor, Pit-1. TSH immunoreactivity is, however, widespread in extrapituitary tissues, and the possibility that this may reflect a widespread distribution of Pit-1 was therefore investigated in embryonic chicks, prior to the ontogenic differentiation of the pituitary gland. TSH immunoreactivity in chick embryos at the end of the first trimester of the 21d incubation period was present in discrete cells in the developing brain (particularly in ependymal cells …

Transcriptomic and histological characteristics of innate immune activation in brain parenchyma in a rat model of neonatal intraventricular hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) remains a major complication in preterm infants with lifelong sequelae. There is no effective … itive to differences between groups than morphological immune cell analysis. Gliosis at the edge of ependyma occurs over time. These results help establish the timeline of inflammation after IVH to better define the window for treating IVH-associated inflammation and subsequent brain injury.

Fingerprint changes in CSF composition associated with different aetiologies in human neonatal hydrocephalus: glial proteins associated with cell damage and loss.

BACKGROUND: In hydrocephalus an imbalance between production and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) results in fluid accumulation, comp … ased. Raised MBP in post-haemorrhagic and spina bifida with hydrocephalus indicates damage to oligodendrocytes and myelin. Cell proliferation and differentiation from ependymal, subependymal and choroid plexus cells in response to stroke in rats.

We tested the hypothesis that populations of ependymal, subependymal and choroid plexus cells proliferate and differentiate after stroke in adult rats. Rats were subjected to 2 h of middle cerebral artery occlusion (n=70) and euthanized at 1, 2, 4, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days (10 per time point). Hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunostaining were performed using antibodies against bromodeoxyuridine, neuronal nuclear antigen and glial fibrillary acidic protein after stroke. In normal nonischemic rats (n=10), single layers of ependymal and choroid plexus cells do not react with bromodeoxyuridine, …

Intracerebral subependymomas. Clinical and neuropathological analyses with special reference to the possible existence of a less benign variant.

The frequency of asymptomatic subependymomas was 0.4% in 1,000 serial routine necropsies and 0.7% in symptomatic subependymomas from 1,000 serial surgical specimens of intracranial neoplasms. Among patients with subependymoma (7 symptomatic and 4 asymptomatic), we found 3 cases of marked nuclear polymorphism (NP) in biopsy specimens. The subjective NP was objectively quantified by computer-assisted morphometry, by which a significant difference in nuclear size between these three cases and other cases (p less than 0.005) was revealed. This morphological characteristic correlated with the resul

Heterogeneous distribution of the cAMP receptor protein RII in the nervous system: evidence for its intracellular accumulation on microtubules, microtubule-organizing centers, and in the area of the Golgi complex.

The cellular and subcellular distribution of the regulatory subunit RII of cAMP-dependent protein kinase was studied by light and electron microscopy immunocytochemistry in tissue sections from rat brain and in primary cultures of brain cells. RII immunoreactivity was present in most neurons, although at variable concentration. In addition, RII was also detectable in other cell types including glia, neuroepithelial cells, and cells of mesenchymal origin. In the cell cytoplasm, RII immunoreactivity was concentrated at certain sites. An accumulation of RII immunoreactivity was found in all RII-p

Immunohistochemical and electron microscopic study of subependymal giant cell astrocytoma.

Six cases of subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SGCA), five associated with tuberous sclerosis (TS), were reviewed by light microscopy, electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Histologically, all cases showed features typical of SGCA. GFAP and neurofilament expression were found in all cases. Synaptophysin and myelin basic protein were positive in single different cases. The MIB-1 positive rate was 0% in 4 cases, 3% in a case with recurrence after a partial resection, and 6.4% in another case with a rapid growing tumor. By electron microscope, glial filament was identified in the tumor…

Endogenous opioid signalling regulates spinal ependymal cell proliferation.

After injury, mammalian spinal cords develop scars to confine the lesion and prevent further damage. However, excessive scarring can hinder neural regeneration and functional recovery1,2. These competing actions underscore the importance of developing therapeutic strategies to dynamically modulate scar progression. Previous research on scarring has primarily focused on astrocytes, but recent evidence has suggested that ependymal cells also participate. Ependymal cells normally form the epithelial layer encasing the central canal, but they undergo massive proliferation and differentiation into …

Infundibular tanycytes as modulators of neuroendocrine function: hypothetical role in the regulation of the thyroid and gonadal axis.

Tanycytes comprise a heterogeneous population of specialized cells of glial origin that line the floor and ventrolateral walls of the third ventricle between the rostral and caudal limits of the hypothalamic median eminence. While morphologic and ultrastructural features suggest a role as barrier cells, creating separate compartments between the cerebrospinal fluid, median eminence and hypothalamus, tanycytes likely have multiple other important functions that have yet to be fully elucidated. Possibilities to consider are a role in neuroendocrine regulation including modulation of the hypothal
