BACKGROUND: Factors including obesity and morphologic parameters around the hip that increase physeal stress are associated with an increased risk of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Recent evidence suggests that superior epiphyseal extension may confer stability to the physis and help protect against SCFE. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between epiphyseal extension and SCFE using an age-matched and sex-matched cohort study.

Radius and ulna fractures are the most common long bone fractures in children and adolescents. Cam-type femoroacetabular impingement is a pathologic condition caused by repetitive impact of the abnormal femur on a normal acetabular rim, resulting in damage to the articular cartilage. Excluding cases with known underlying diseases, the development of primary cam deformity is not well understood. Here, we describe a patient with cam-type femoroacetabular impingement exhibiting delayed epiphyseal closure at the site of the cam lesion. The authors believe that this may represent a cause of primary cam deformity, and hereby report the case with review of the literature.

Medial clavicular epiphysis is the long bone epiphysis to fuse last and therefore, is useful for estimating age in the post-pubertal period. Age estimation was done from clavicles obtained from 343 cadavers (252 males and 91 females) of known age. The data was subjected to statistical analysis to see whether the difference obtained in the various ages was significant or not. We retrospectively analysed the clinical results of 30 patients with injuries of the sternoclavicular joint at a minimum of 12 months' follow-up. A closed reduction was attempted in 14 cases. It was successful in only five of ten dislocations, and failed in all four epiphyseal disruptions. A total of 25 patients underwent surgical reduction, in 18 cases in conjunction with a stabilisation procedure. At a mean follow-up of 60 months, four patients were lost to follow-up. We present tension-band wiring in the treatment of Salter-Harris types III and IV avulsion fractures in the hand. By placing a small-gauge wire through the insertion of the ligament into the fracture fragment, accurate reduction and stability, allowing early mobilization, are achieved, avoiding many of the pitfalls and complications of other methods of internal fixation. The technique is simple and adheres to important physiological and biomechanical principles.
